Personnaly, I am leaving Hi-MD format, all my standard MDs are now in SP mode. Because (1) there is a huge choice of non Hi-MD recorder/player (2) Hi-MD is expensive (both machine and discs) (3) my Hi-MD players have had / have now buttons and / or jog level and / or sreen display problems (4) SP sound is quite perfect for me (I have tried 352kbps and PCM) and can be listened with all players (5) I have a deck with a perfect sound (Sony MDS-B5) SP only !

Bought by Pierre in Europe (shops or eBay). I ask Pierre if there is difference.

But you say it, you don't try the plugin. Just do it, THEN judge. You can easily compare with or without because there is a "power" button on the front panel.

If we start a ABSOLUTE BEST SOUND list for decks - include professionnal ones and a with long term reability (>> one year) - what will be your choice (or your dreaming choice)? Suppose you have any Net-MD or Hi-MD machines like MZ-RH1 to do any further editing work.

I have a MDS-B5 (100€ from e-bay France). It work proprely with an amazing sound. That is why I choose to come back to SP mode for all my standard Mds (200). That take months to re-record everything in real time from my Cyrus Dad5 or from my computer with an optical out, Winamp/DFXAudioEnhancer). I don't succeed in recording from a optical source with my MDS-B5 (don't test analog source yet). Because I have a MZ-RH1, a MZ-NH900 and a MZ-N510 - all type-R (S) - I am not to sad about my recording problem with my MDS-B5. I only hope that the listening capacity will work years. For another deck, I have two choice, one is to buy one in Nhat Tao area (Cho Lon) around 70$ but 90's one or one in the center of the town in Vietnam no far away from my home(see my list http://forums.sonyinsider.com/index.php?showtopic=24631) for more than 200$ (even found a "brand new" one type-S deck in another shop). So your post make me rethink about it and I just discoved that 3 screws are missing (the one near the battery, the two inside ones at the front of the upper panel. With also a jog lever wich work only when it want, I have been screwed by this shop even at 170$ the unit (with no accessories at all). I don't know where to find these kind of screws. REC settings propose only Hi-SP/Hi-LP/PCM. I know it is possible to record in SP mode (not the LP2-like with from SS) but I don't remember how.

I supposed that you know that I you use SS for making SP recording you will get a MD with a sound quality similar to LP2. Just Make a test... if you are ready to record in real time from your MP3s : use Winamp + the Wincue plugin to have separate tracks (you must export a playlist from Winamp : see Winamp Library/Playlists/Manage playlist/Export playlist...). The plugin DFX Audio Enhancer will enhance all your music, lossless and MP3 files.

Hello everybody, thanks for that reborn post ! I am completely in the subject because I am right know re-recording ALL my Mds - except my 1G MD - in SP. Most of them has been recorded previously in Hi-MD mode (352-256-192kbps). Source 1) original CD (Cyrus dadIII player) 2) Music in my computer, optical out : Flac, Ape, even MP3 because I record in real time with WinAmp + Wincue + DFX Audio Enhancer Monster optical cable Recorders (all type S so type R) Sony MZ-RH1 Sony MZ-NH900 Sony MZ-N510 to finally listening on my Sony professionnal deck MDS-B5 (SP only) which have a terrific sound.

I don't need to do artwork for CDs, only for MDs. There are many freeware for CD printing on the web anyway. I use Goggle Images, iPaint-Machine (screen capture) then why not The Gimp or exPressit if you have don't need to transform your image. You can still do a lot with all that don't you ?
