  1. Ah, cheers @kgallen 🙂 Interesting. Not sure it's worth messing with my MZ-N710 though given the extras aren't anything I'm really missing 🤔
  2. Welcome back @comspec Good work resurrecting your broken NH900 🙂 Does it use the "standard" Sony NiMH gumstick batteries? If so, there are plenty of replacement batteries available now if you want to power it away from its cradle (take a look on your local eBay for "Sony NH-14WM" and you should find Vapex, Double Pow etc options). What does the mod do to the MZ-N707?
  3. This week I have been trying, sadly without success, to fix a C13 error with one of my decks. Tried the obvious (cleaned the laser, reseated the ribbon cables) and, with some very much appreciated help from @kgallen, tried some of the tests available via the Service Menu. Nothing untoward detected but when I tried to run the Auto Check it just stuck at 00 CHECK and got no further. On a more positive note, I've been picking up some more blanks. Nothing exotic, just some "bread and butter" Sony discs that I used to buy back in the day. Examples below:
  4. Welcome to the forum, Alfred. I'm not Stefano but Web MiniDisc does facilitate "real" SP. It sends the PCM data to the NetMD device, which then does the encoding to ATRAC. Stefano confirmed this back on page two: If you use the MDLP modes then the app does the encoding and then sends the LP2/LP4 data to your NetMD device.
  5. I know that SACD players initially try to find the SACD layer on any disc you insert and then, if they cannot find one, look for a standard CD layer. This is why they usually take longer to read discs than normal CD players. I don't know where they go looking for the SACD layer though in terms of inner part of the disc/outer part of the disc etc.
  6. Once it's read the SACD TOC it appears to be fine and plays without any issues. It's just that initial checking stage where it seems to fail to read the SACD layer so then defaults to the CD one.
  7. Haha 😆 Yeah, I was just applying MD logic to SACD players. Might be absolutely fine for all I'd know. I've done a few more tests and turning the player off for about 10 minutes seems to be sufficient, for now at least, to get it working properly again. I can probably live with that for the time being but it's a tad annoying as I was about to pull the trigger on a Control A1(II) compatible CDP-XB player but am now thinking I should be looking for another SCD-XB instead 🤔
  8. Okay, so the 770 has a different mechanism: CD Mechanism Type: CDM66B-DVBU6 Base Unit Name: DVBU-6 Optical Pick-up Name: KHM-230AAA 780/790 have: CD Mechanism Type: CDM66B-DVBU6B Base Unit Name: DVBU-6B Optical Pick-up Name: KHM-234AMA I guess that means a straight swap is probably out of the question?
  9. Looks like the 790 uses the same mechanism as the 780. Now to find the service manual for the 770....
  10. Pretty sure all of my SACDs are hybrids. I don't think many non-hybrid discs were ever released.
  11. I also have a very battered, but perfectly functional, SCD-XB770. I wonder if I could swap the drive mechanisms? The Service Manual for the SCD-XB780 says: CD Mechanism Type: CDM66B-DVBU6B Base Unit Name: DVBU-6B Optical Pick-up Name: KHM-234AMA Unfortunately it states under "model name using similar mechanism": new. Which presumably means the 770 had a different mechanism? I'll try to find the service manuals for the 770 and 790.
  12. I've got the Service Manual for the SCD-XB780 but seem to recall I couldn't find one for the 790 when I last looked. Will try again. The 780, which is probably very similar, has a "test mode" but it looks like you need specific test discs to use with it.
  13. Update: so after leaving the deck turned off for about 30 minutes I switched it on and inserted the SACD. Player read the disc successfully and I started listening to the SACD layer. After 5 minutes I ejected and re-inserted the disc and, again, it was correctly recognised as a SACD. I then played the disc for 30 minutes before ejecting and re-inserting the disc. This time the machine failed to read the SACD layer and defaulted to the CD one. When I ejected the disc it felt warm to the touch so there is obviously some heat in the machine after it's been on for 35 minutes. Tried another SACD. Same outcome: would only read the CD layer.
  14. Been having a strange issue with one of my CD players today. As mentioned above, my office set up has a Sony SCD-XB790 SACD player in it. I don't have that many SACDs tbh but I happened to be listening to one earlier. The machine was probably on (not necessarily playing) for about 2-3 hours when I ejected the SACD I had been listening to and inserted another. This time, however, the machine failed to read the SACD layer of the hybrid disc and just defaulted to the CD layer. I tried to override this using the SACD/CD button but got a < Not Hybrid > error message. I ejected the disc and gave it a clean, although it looked spotless, and tried again. Same outcome. Tried a different disc and then the original SACD I had been listening to successfully but the machine was refusing to recognise they were SACDs and would only play the CD layer. Tried the discs in my Marantz SACD player and they were all recognised as SACDs without any issues. Turned the SCD-XB790 off for a couple of hours while I got on with some work meetings (interspersed with searching eBay for a replacement SCD-XB790 🤦‍♂️) and then tried again. This time it recognised the SACD as a hybrid disc and played the SACD layer without any issues. After about 45 minutes I ejected and re-inserted the SACD but this time it defaulted to the CD layer and I was back to the < Not Hybrid > messages when I tried to manually select the SACD layer. I have turned the machine off now and will leave it for 30 minutes or so before trying again (I did try quickly turning it off and then on again but that had no effect). @sfbp in another thread mentioned the possibility of machines (he was specifically referring to MD decks) potentially becoming temperamental if they overheated and I wonder if something temperature related is going on here? Anyone come across something similar with Sony SACD players before?
  15. interestingly, I've had some issues today with my SACD player being "temperamental", which could be temperature related. To avoid dragging this thread off topic I'll post about it in the CD player thread:
  16. There are quite a lot of mini tripods available for vlogging. They have clamps for smart phones - not sure if they’d work with a portable MiniDisc recorder? Not sure where you’re based @Shahryar but might be worth taking a look on your local version of Amazon for “vlogging kit” and seeing if anything suitable come up.
  17. I don't think it's likely to be overheating in my case as it would happen from when the machine was first turned on. Having said that, I've no idea how quickly these things heat up! I'll dig it out some time this week and have another play around.
  18. Wow, it must be a monster @fourbanks 😲
  19. I’m after a spare drive. One of my 980s is a bit temperamental. I need to pop the lid off and give it a clean etc but as the prices for those head ever upwards I thought it sensible to have a working drive in reserve. You do wonder if the current prices will be sustained in the long run. There’s obviously a limited amount of stock but, as you say, I wonder how many people will find a new hobby to occupy their time and start selling them off?
  20. Nice looking machine. In which dimension is it 2 inches bigger than normal hi-fi?
  21. Cheers @M1JWR. I'll keep an eye on that one. I'm always a bit nervous about stuff sold for spares/repair as you've got no comeback if the bits you want are the bits that are knackered. If it stays cheap it might be worth taking a punt though.
  22. Yeah, when I looked yesterday that was the only one I could find and, like you say, the numbers don’t align. Thanks for the links. I’ll have a nosey around.
  23. Is that the one you posted about over on Tapeheads, @fourbanks? It does seem to have a fairly weird ratio of recording to playback time.
  24. How are you getting on with the 940 now you've had it for a couple of weeks @kgallen?
