That's great news - amazing work 👍 I don't know who maintains the Web MiniDisc Pro instructions on the MiniDisc Wiki site but they don't currently mention anything about the download functionality working with the MZ-RH1 (unless I'm missing something 🤔). Just gives details of the exploit you discovered. Maybe it's obvious when you connect the correct device?

Interesting. IIRC the CD63KI was a well rated CD player in its day. Shows how good the DACs/analogue circuitry were in some of these MiniDisc decks.

Hi Chris. Your MZ-RH1 does support NetMD but the exploit that the developers of Web MiniDisc Pro used to enable the transfer of tracks from a MiniDisc player to a computer currently only works with some devices (which doesn't include any HiMD devices like your MZ-RH1 at the moment). Prior to the development of this exploit using Web MiniDisc Pro, the MZ-RH1/MZ-M200 was the only device that allowed you to transfer tracks from a MiniDisc player to a computer. All other NetMD/HiMD devices only allowed to the transfer the other way (i.e. from computer to MiniDisc). You'll be able to transfer the tracks from your MZ-RH1 to your computer using SonicStage. Have you managed to successfully install SonicStage on your PC? If not, there are some (Windows 10 but I suspect it'll be similar?) instructions here:

Hi @ChrisPasta, welcome to the forum. Are the files you wish to transfer Hi-MD files or "normal" MiniDisc recordings (i.e. SP / LP2 /LP4)? If the latter, then you can now use Web MiniDisc Pro to transfer files from a compatible NetMD portable to a computer: https://www.minidisc.wiki/guides/webminidisc This doesn't currently work with Hi-MD formatted discs or with your MZ-RH1 though so may of no use whatsoever for you, sorry. AFAIK, SonicStage is still the only way of getting files off an MZ-RH1. I have not used SonicStage myself but there are users here who do, and know the "tricks" to get it working on modern computers. Edit: corrected some errors (see asivery's post below).

Not sure if you need MDLP or not but, if you do, then there's only one ES deck that's compatible: MDS-JA333ES.

I've just tried a quick test with iTunes and an MDS-JB980 and am getting similar results to you (four songs in and still on Track 1 on the MiniDisc). The album I'm trying it with does seem to have very short gaps between the songs though. There's a possible solution here:

Did you use "Synchro Recording"? The manual states that: Might be worth a try if you hadn't.

Hi @Brendan H, welcome to the forum. What you're suggesting should work fine. I've not got an MZ-R90 but have made digital recordings from PC to a Sony MiniDisc deck without any issues. You might encounter some issues with track markers if the music you're trying to record is gapless (i.e. no silence between tracks). Recording from a PC doesn't seem to send over the track marker information in the same way as recording from a CD player does but you can always add these in manually if it is an issue for you. Good luck and let us know how you get on 🙂 Oh, and you might need to silence mail notifications etc on your computer prior to starting to record as any other sounds your PC makes will end up on your recordings.

Funnily enough, this popped up on the r/minidisc Reddit yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/minidisc/comments/11wpkjt/mzn10_noise_question/ The person who posted that has an N10, rather than an N910, but MiniDisc.org and the Wiki both seem to indicate the units are very similar. Certainly the Service Manual for the MZ-N10 shows a very similar diagram: I haven't done a detailed "spot the difference", and the part numbers for part 161 quoted underneath differ, but it certainly looks very similar. None of which explains why my other MZ-N910 is much quieter though 🤔

Welcome to the forum, @Pedro Lopes. You mentioned that you'd bought some used MiniDiscs? Do they play back okay? After making a recording (but before ejecting the disc or turning off the machine - i.e. before writing the TOC) can you play back and hear what you've recorded?

I'd be happy to send a tin over to you if you can't find anything locally, assuming the postage from the UK to Canada doesn't render the whole thing pointlessly expensive.

This does seem to have pretty much sorted itself out now. I am not 100% convinced the jog dial is quite as precise in its operation as on my other MZ-R909 but it's no longer glitching about erratically. And at least I haven't destroyed the device by taking it apart to try to "fix" it 😆

The grease arrived this morning. Very quick service considering I only ordered it yesterday lunchtime. In case anyone in the UK is interested, I purchased it from this seller on eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374074362776 Before I applied any of the grease, I gave the screw a clean with some IPA on a cotton bud but no visible dirt came off it. I then applied a very small amount of grease to the screw when I had the OP in the outside position. Did a bit of jumping from track 1 to track 17 and back again on a disc to try and spread the grease along the length of the screw and, well, I don't think it's really made any difference to the noise. I'll leave it for a bit and see if anything improves with a bit of use. I'm a bit reluctant to slather too much more grease in there in case it gets all over parts it shouldn't...

The MZ-N910 does seem to return the OP to the centre position when you eject a disc but if I remove the battery after playing the final song it remains in the outside position.

Thanks @kgallen. I'll give that a go when the grease arrives. I've been playing about with it a bit today and noticed that it only makes the screeching noise when moving forward through the disc. i.e. it screeches if I advance from track 1 to track 12 or from track 3 to track 15 but not if I move in the opposite direction.
