All the current low-mid end Sharps support MDLP, so that ain't a problem.
-
I too stopped once I had heard MD. Even analog CD dubs ripped MP3. Now I buy CDs, and only use MP3 if I absolutely cannot find it on CD, but most of the time I won't bother. Aslo MP3 is handy just to find out what that song on the radio was. People! Don't download MP3! Your ears will hate you!
-
I'd go the lower-mid end Sharps. They are rectangular, and have a gumstick battery too.
-
No D/A should be going on - it is just a pure digital transfer.

Some recorders to look at: Sharp: MD-MT770/888, IM-MT880/899, MD-MT170/180/190/200. Sony: MZ-R909, R910, N1, N10, N707, N505. Panasonic: SJ-MR220, MR230, MR250. Recorders both record and play. And the "best MD" depends on what you want to use it for.

Wow!! If you have a cheapie/broken/unused pair of sunnies around try the screws from those - some people have used these on other units.

No MP3 for me. Yuck. EXCEPT! The albums I record in mono are by The 12th Man. They are a send up of almost all the sports commentators here in Australia, but mainy cricket (I assume you know what cricket is?) commentators, and the sport in general Not rap, but one song on there there is definately rock. I've recorded all my sisters Eminen crap in LP2, and some in LP4. I had originally recorded the discs in MONO before I bought my PC3. When I got the deck I was thrilled with the prospect of having a double CD album on one disc in full stereo, so I re-did all my 12th Man CDs this way, and was totally disappointed with it's sound quality. It uses stereo to exteme and I don't think LP2 can hack it. I tried LP4 (because I recorded an LP4 12th Man disc for my mates) and it was shocking. I then moved on to music recording with LP2 and it sounded better, but either too bass heavy or clashy. So I stuck with SP. :? Anyway, the exception with MP3s (in this case 192kpbs .wma) is that my 12th Man albums sounded better (but not greatly - just better, no, clearer stereo effects). Less "static" from channel-hopping (not white noise), less artifacts and no pre-echo. I also recorded movies in LP2 and MONO, and MONO is still king, which really does suck, because I get no stereo. Other than that, I never touch MP3 anymore, and I've kept my original MP3-->MD dubs to remind me why MP3 stinks.

Picking CD against ATRAC is pretty hard, but if you listen to Rage Against The Machine - "Wake Up!" there is something in the first five or so seconds that is a dead giveaway. See if you can notice it.

I have a feeling I might have answered this of there. If you have a PC soundcard with optical I/O then try running it through your PC from your PS2 - the soundcards I've used ignored the SCMS and let me record.

Water+electronics isn't a good match. I think it is fairly safe to say your remote is stuffed. You can buy a new one at www.audiocubes.com but they are expensive. If you feel the need, you could try taking it apart and soaking it in isopropyl alcohol to free it from moisture, but you do so at your own risk. :?

The N707 is a fine unit to start out with, it packs a lot of features for a nice price. It lacks digital out (as all but the first MD recorder did) but you can set it to analog line out, then you just connect it directly up to your Hi-Fi via a line cable (usually supplied) to the Hi-Fi's line in.
-
Yes, give MD Australia a go- I have bought from them several times. Also, check places like Retravision, Tandy, Myer, JB Hi-Fi, Dick Smith, etc, but MDA has the best variety, and generally the cheapest prices.
-
You can't actually "send" them to the MD, you need to play the songs you want, with the AN1 as the default audio out, and the recorder does need to be in recording mode.
-
Read through this thread - it might help. http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=153
-
Craig, you cannot "send" files to your R500 - the AN1 is only an analog link for recording sound in real-time. In order to enable it you will need to go to control panel--->sound--->devices and then select "playback device" from a list, and choose the AN1 or "USB Audio Device".

Not a bad idea. You can use this one now, if you want: http://www.minidisct.com/forum/forumdispla...p?s=&forumid=13

mhettinger, if you have the cash, get a deck with optical out, like the MDS-JE770/780, JB940/980, MDS-PC3, and these will yeild the best results. Even if you can't get a deck with optical out, analog will sound find too. Check out the JE470. What you will need then is either a PC soundcard with optical in, or something like the MOTU 828 for Mac (or PC) - it is a firewire "reciever" for your Mac, and can do lots of fancy stuff. http://www.motu.com/ If you decide to get just a cheapo PC soundcard with optical in, then a program like CoolEdit will be needed. BP, a shielded cable IIRC, is sheilded against radio and magnetic interference.

Sennheiser buds are definately worth a look: The MX500s have damn good bass for a bud, and don't skimp on the treble. Cheap too, ~$17US.

As soon as I got my MDR, I quickly realised how shoddy MP3 was. Haven't touched it since, and I pity the poor fools walking around with 20gigs of "CD Quality" 64kbps .wma files, and 128kbps MP3s.
-
You'll get clipping and distortion like you've never heard.
-
Stef, there is currently nothing in the MD world that fits all your needs, namely the USB upload. As much as we hate to admit it, I think the iPod would be more suited to your needs if you *need* USB upload, which is a shame because people who us MD to record their vinyl say it is the best meduim to record it with, and betters CD-R in sound quality.

luceluna, there are two models that you might be wanting to look at: Sony MZ-N505 Sharp MD-MT190 If you have lots of MP3s you want to put onto MiniDisc, the the N505 suits that purpose well, since it has "NetMD" which allows you to download MP3s at high speed from you PC, as well as record in real-time like non-NetMD units. While it is a bit bare bones feature wise, it certainly isn't a bad model to start you off. If you can afford the N707 though, that would be a better choice. Both these models have the Sony "Battery Bump" on the back where an AA is inserted to power it, so they don't lie flat. The Sharp model MD-MT190 packs more features and it better designed, but it lacks NetMD, so while you can still record MP3s off your computer, this can only be done in real-time. No Sharp units have the "Battery Bump" like the low and mid range Sonys. I think you'll find both units reliable and pretty tough. The Sonys are plastic backed, other than the all metal design of the Sharps, but the plastic is damn strong and won't cause any problems. If you think you like NetMD, then choose the N505 or N707 from Sony, if you don't really care about it then the Sharp is a winner.
-
Daryl, you seem to be the second person here that this has happened to. It appears (not totally sure) that the unit is stuffed, somehow. Others have tried the R700 hack and can still charge their batteries. Perhaps try this: http://minidisc.org/sony_mzr_reset.html It may work. BTW, the trouble shooting section is a day old at most, so that's why there isn't anything there.
-
AH, colourwise. My bad now I see the connection. :?

I doubt Sony would have decided to let car audio MD slip by the wayside - one would guess there are new models coming out soon (if not now in Japan). There would be plenty of other manufactuters of MDLP head units - Kenwood, JVC, Alpine and Blaupunkt to name a few. You'd be best of asking Leland to see if he has spotted anything new in Japan.
