  1. I've seen a pack of 3 or 5 64MB USB flash drives. You can always buy them/anything in bulk from a distributor.
  2. My take on DH10P vs RH1: -DH10P is much bulkier. In turn, you get a color screen capable of showing album arts, Japanese AND Chinese, and of course a 1.3MP camera. In contrast, the RH1's OLED screen cannot even display track titles, but it is much slimmer. -DH10P comes with a cradle. -The camera feature of the DH10P is just a bonus. Start-up time and writing time to the MD/HiMD media is slow, so don't expect it to be a quick point and shoot as it takes quite a while for the unit to even start taking pictures. -Both have HD-amp. RH1 has "proper" MP3 playback. -RH1 has all the advantage being a recorder, including capability to upload legacy MD recordings. DH10P is downloader only. -Today, you can probably find the DH10P at a cheaper price than the RH1. So overall, the DH10P is a more interesting unit if you're not into live recording, but the RH1's form factor is so nice and slim that it is a good portable unit too.
  3. With support for legacy Atrac seems to be diminishing in HiMD units, and non-existant in Sonicstage, I would pick HiSP instead, unless you still have SP-only units.

    MZM-200

Yep. Plus E931 earbud, which is the stock bud of the Japanese version. As for now, the Japanese version from Audiocubes is the better deal, considering that it already comes with the E931 and 35ELK remote for the same price as the US version, unless you really must have black.
  5. That is only valid for a general use processor. Most consumer electronic devices have a specific chipsets that only function/optimized for certain funtionality. Yes, you can probably create a firmware for Md/HiMd to decode AAC, but if the codec chip is not optimized for it, you may only get sub-optimal result (like slower than real-time decoding, very high power draw, etc).
  6. Just another typo. Seems like the page creator mistook Atrac3 for Atrac3+. The bitrates mentioned for Atrac3+ are Atrac3 bitrates only. Sony USA has had countless errors in regards to specs and product info on their website too. If the RH1 cannot playback HiSP, we should have had plenty of complaints in this forum.
  7. Just continue. That message is just a warning. Many hardware vendors don't bother submitting their drivers to MS for "testing."
  8. Simple, just look at market share. Has Sony/Samsung/Creative, etc overtaken apple? No. You can blame it on anyhting, but Apple definitely did the right stuff. all the other companies need to do is just follow what Apple did, but oh that would be too simple. Just look at how confused Sony execs are.
  9. There is already a replacement for floppy disks, it's USB flash drive. They are small, re-writable, large enough to contain an OS, and fast enough for speedy data transfer. Newer BIOSes even enable booting from these USB flash drives. Their $/GB is not as cheap as MD/HiMD, but their much faster data transfer rate easily compensate that drawback. Use Truecrypt with its travel mode, and any USB key can be secure. You can even use Truecrypt, and burn the image file to CD/DVD, and the will be truly secure. MD is actually a poor backup device, considering its slow data transfer rate and propietary technology (what if sony decided not to make any HiMD units anymore). I know that my backup on CDs and DVDs will be readable on future optical drives.
  10. My local sonystyle has the purple one, and they have at least 5 units on the shelf. However, considering a regular Joe can go to Target and buy an 8GB zen micro photo for the same price, I don't think the NW-A1200 will see any good sales.
  11. Short answer, no. Sony has lifted many DRM restrictions on MD/HiMD with the RH1. Releasing a PC drive would anger the music/movie execs more, and they would veto the product from being released in the first place.
  12. Well, that's how smart those big Sony execs are. And to save the company, Sir howard cut 10000 jobs. Hmm, I got a better idea, how about firing those stupid execs instead? Again, until Sony cut the music and movie industry off (or spin off the consumer electronics to a seperate company), we won't see any potential contender against the iPod. With MS joining in addition to the gaming platform, let's see how Sony will fare. With rockbox providing gapless on iPods, I see less and less incentive for Sony portable audio devices.
  13. Just went to a local sonystyle store, there is no traces of MD/HiMD at all. The store used to sell the RH910 and some blanks. Now, none of them are found, not even blanks. So much for our beloved format. Sony USA marketing team at its best...
  14. Yes, couple things just arrived. Super Eurobeat 168 and 169 Talk about scarry (168). A couple Japanese stuff: Hinoi Team - Super Euro Party V6 - Orange, and Goodday singles
  15. Talk about making the already niche market of MD more niche. Sure, it's for pros, but why remove it from the consumer side? Not eveybody knows the pro website, not even the pros. If you go from Sony.com, the obvious links are to sonystyle. Oh well, as if Sony USA has a marketing department in the 1st place.

    Hi-MD/Flash

yeah, as a removable media, MD is loosing steam unless Sony can improve the data read/write transfer rate. $7 for 1GB is still cheaper than flash memory, but you can get 2GB micro SD for about $70 now, smaller and faster than HiMD. In time, the price advantage will be gone. sony did try to use its memory stick as a removable medium for some of its early network walkmen, but at that time, the price/MB was too expensive. Now, Sony is just playing catch up, not realizing the potential of their own products.
  17. It's Firefox. Firefox has a feature that prefetch pages/links so pages will appear faster when you click on the links. Unfortunately, the downside is in sites with many links (eg. forums), it can result in firefox gobbling too much memory. Try updating to the latest version. There are workarounds, you can find them at mozilla's support/FAQ site. However, results vary, as it works for some people but not others.
  18. Try connecting the unit to the AC adaptor while transferring.
  19. I think legacy MD player only units of x20 series and older are made in Japan. Dunno about the x30 series (I think the E730 is still made in Japan, correct me if I'm wrong). As for HiMD, the latest ones (E50, E70) are either made in Malaysia/China. Bland1000 can verify this as he has many player only units.
  20. You only need to do album gain if the whole album tracks are related to each other (eg. live concert, nonstop mix, classical, etc). Other than that, just do track analysis and track gain. As setting the target, look at the clipping indicator (red "Y"). you want to target the highest number where the clipping is gone. I find the default 89 put the volume too low for my taste, but pretty much guarantee zero clipping. I find 90 or 91 is good enough in eliminating clipping most of the time.
  21. I believe it when I see it. So far, there's only the uploading program, not exactly Sonicstage. This is Sony we're talking about.
  22. I've been jumping into linux back and forth (when red hat was red hat), and always returned to windows, mainly because of hardware compatibility, EAC, and daemon tools. I've been going through many distro (Suse, linspire, etc). In the past, the biggest problem with linux was hardware compatibility (I mean, even detecting my mouse was a problem...). Today, hardware compatiblity has improved, although there are still instances where official driver is non-existence from the manufacture. Today, it's the apps. Just like MacOS, the challenge going to a non-windows environment is the lack of apps. Sure, there are plenty of open source stuff, but a lot of them are not polished in term of user friendliness (eg. installation, patching, etc). Plus, many distros are pretty bloated, and trying to do a custom install is very challenging for a regular Joe. For a hobby, linux is fun. For a workstation/server, linux is excellent. For a regular Joe's desktop PC, linux is not there yet. Regular Joe needs simple installation for programs and drivers(installer), plug-n-play, and mainstream application. I'm itching to try ubuntu, but I don't have a spare PC/partition to play with.
  23. Then you definitely don't have a good seal. Change the silicone tip to one that fit you ear canal so they are snug fit, not loose. Canal phones with good fit blocks outside noise, so you don't actually have to up the volume. Either that or you got a defective bud.
  24. But at least you can use the device as a file storage with any other OS. MTP devices are useless on non-WinXP system.
  25. Err, I thought this is about finding the earbud foams? Or sponge? Anyway, in-ear canal phones will usually have better bass than regular earbuds. However, there are NO earbuds that can compare to a full fledge headphone. If you want bass, get the Sennheiser HD212pro headphone. It's a good point to start, and cheap too.
