What's your favorite band/artist/group, and why?
pata2001 replied to Christopher's topic in The Loft
Wow, talk about old thread! 2 years gap! (2004-2006). My 2 fav artists: Dave Rodgers (real name is Giancarlo Pasquini). He's the godfather of Eurobeat. I like his music, even though I didn't know about him until years later. It was 1995, I saw a music video of V6's Music for The People, a J-Euro cover of one of Dave Rodgers' songs. At that time, I don't even know what genre it is, but I know I like it. The music is fast and energetic, really fresh in my mind after being bored to death by Chinese/Canto-pop ballads. V6 was doing many covers of Dave's songs, eg. Made in Japan, Take Me Higher, Golden 70's Years, Be Yourself (cover for Kingdom of Rock). Years later, I finally found out about him and the Eurobeat genre. His music continues to be my favorite (Space Boy, 100, The Race is Over, Deja Vu, Space Invader, Eldorado). 奥井 雅美 (Masami Okui). She's a Japanese rock/pop artist, writes and sings many anime songs. My first exposure was with the anime Slayers. She and Megumi Hayashibara sing most of the anime theme songs. I kinda like her voice, but I found the music used in Slayers to be somewhat repetitive, and didn't pay much attention. Not until I listen to Shuffle, used as one of the opening theme songs for YuGiOh:Duel Monsters. That is an excellent track. After, that, I'm a fan, following up on her excellent album after album (Devotion, Crossroad, Rebirth, Dragonfly, God Speed), and not to forget her team up group with Chihiro Yonekura, forming r.o.r/s (Reflections of Renaissance/Sounds) with their fantastic album, Dazzle. I found Makkun's music (at least after the Slayers era) to be original and energetic. She also joined up with JAM Project, a well known band in anime world. She even formed her own label (Dragonfly is the first album under her own label). http://www.makusonia.com/ -
I wanted to, but the USB1.1 speed makes it useless. Too expensive for archival, too slow for quick backup.

Unfortunately not. In-canal earphones is like plugging you ears with your fingers. You won't hear outside noise, but you'll still hear the noise conducted by your body (mouth moving, walking, etc). No way around that, it's the law of physics. I don't know about noise cancelling earbuds though. Another option is a closed headphone.

I have both Sony EX71 and Panasonic RP-HJE50. I prefer the sound signature of the panasonic better (more balanced), but the EX71 has better isolation. I feel the cable on the EX71 to be "better" than the plastic thin panasonic, although there are many users said the cable of the EX71 doesn't last long enough. Another plus for both of them is that both are short cord, even for US version.

Message to Moderators/Owners of MDCF

Err, what ad? -
That is a classic example of the "reliability" of hard-drives, especially used in a portable/on-the-go environment. I can't wait the time we'll have solid-state memory 20GB DAPs. Shouldn't be that much longer, considering 8GB nano is coming. On another note, MD is prone to wear and tear too, especially if you only have 1 unit, and use the unit to record and playback all the time.
-
I assume when playing the MP3 via sonicstage, the RH10 is just reading the MP3 as data and passes it through USB, and let Sonicstage+your PC decodes the MP3.
-
Currently, you can only do this with the RH1.

Once you break a CD into individual tracks, there is always the potential of loosing gapless. Most CD rippers will add some empty frames for lead-in/out of each track, not a problem with regular tracks, but will ruin gapless tracks. There is an option to disable this in EAC. I think Sonicstage cannot import WAV gaplessly anyway, if the WAVs are seperated tracks. This is why I always backup my AudioCDs into an image WAV (1 big WAV file) + CUE sheet to store track information. This way I don't loose any gaplessness.
-
If your tracks are all non-protected (DRM free), I don't see anything to worry about. The main concern in the past when upgrading Sonicstage is your library not being recognized due to the draconian copy protection. However, now that we have no DRM on self-ripped tracks, it's not an issue anymore. Still, for non-RH1 HiMD use, staying with 3.4 is fine.
-
Considering Audiocubes is selling the JP RH1 for cheaper (albeit silver version), this is not a pretty good deal. Still, it's good to see HiMD available again in stores. However, I don't think people would like to cough $300 for this considering there is a bigger display showing 30GB iPods.
-
OK, sounds to me you got a broken unit. The NE410 is such an old unit. I bought 1 new form radioshack couple months ago, and it is broken right out of the box (cannot spin the MDs). Forget about it, and find a cheap DH710. Not only it's HiMD, it can playback your MP3s matively.

It all depends on your apps that you're going to be using, and how much time you're willing to spend learning command lines. Although I think linux has a great potential, it's not for me. I don't have time having to do command lines and recompiling a kernel just to install a driver or enable something. I have better things to do. I can't believe that with the nature of linux being opensource, it seems that there is a lack of interest in making it more user friendly. I admit that linux now is MUCH more user friendly than before, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Simple things like installing drivers should be simplified, not forcing user to use command lines and edit config files manually. Even for ubuntu, doing things like enabling 3d acceleration would force you to resort to command lines and/or recompiling the kernel.

Which connection? A mini review of Firewire 400, 800 and USB
pata2001 replied to mercury_in_flames's topic in The Loft
Yeah, eSATA is the way to go. More and more motherboards are having eSATA port, albeit most only have 1 port. Don't have to worry about CPU overhead anymore like USB. I just hope optical drive manufactures wakes up and make more SATA optical drives. -
Or if he has an intel Mac, simply download bootcamp and you can run windows natively on macs.
-
I only use Atrac for gapless. Other than that, I stick with MP3. As for Atrac, I used to use HiSP, but since I still have some legacy MD units, I ended having to re-rip/encode to LP2. As much as I like HiSP's quality, I stick with LP2 now mainly to save time and better compatibility.
-
You can always suggest this to the developers at the website's forum (part of hydrogen-audio). However, I doubt it will get any priority right now. There are still a gazillion plug-ins that need to be made compatible with 0.92. I'm still waiting for the gap-killer plugin to be 0.92 compatible.
-
this is a no brainer. LP4 is 66kbps, LP2 is 132kbps. LP2 is still the best trade-off between quality, size, and compatibility, even in HiMD units.

The DH10P's screen is a regular LCD color screen, not OLED, which is why it sucks up battery a lot.

The inclusion of the 35ELK is more valuable than a $7 disc for me, which is why I went for the JP version (considering that AC is selling them at the same price as US version). 35ELK + E931 > $7. -
But they'll much smaller than a HiMD disc, and with much much faster data read/write speed, they are more useful for multimedia application like digital cameras and video recordings. Besides, prices continue to drop for flash memory, while I don't see any price drop for MD/HiMd unless it's a clearance.

RH1: Tiny volume buttons. jog lever is OK though. Remote is probably a must. DH10P: Play/FF/REW is handled by the nipple button. IMO, it's annoying. Volume is a seperate button on the side. Browsing using the wheel is excellent though. I just wish sony had the option for the wheel to control volume. RH10: Probably the most well-balanced. It has a scroller, not as good as a wheel like the DH10P's, but still makes it easy to browse content. All controls are located close to each other, making it more intuitive. However, they can be small for some people.
