It happens here as well. A bunch of these doesn't even play in Windows Mediaplayer 10. Solution: Use Winamp, activate the Diskwriter plugin and set a directory in there. Then let Winamp play into wave files, import these wave files. Just remember to switch off the EQ and set Volume to 100% and Balance to the center. Winamp has the ability to play anything thrown at it.... To use Winamp normally, deactivate the plugin and restart the comp.

I say, HiMDRenderer is innocent here, as it uses the DirectShow filters installed by SonicStage. I suspect, that Atrac got the scaling wrong by about 0.05 Decibels, as only the highest peaks got clipped. If the recorders codec suffers from the same problem can only be determined, when we have home decks with Digital out.

Breaking News: Prototype Hi-MD Unit(s) Displayed @ CES
jadeclaw replied to Christopher's topic in News
LP2@132k & LP2@105k available in Hi-MD-mode when recording standalone. The Codec is there, so that's a no brainer... And a backlighted display on the main unit. And of course real home decks with all the usual things.... -
Last Manufacturer Of Pro Analog Audio Tape Closes
jadeclaw replied to Christopher's topic in The Loft
Well, it had to happen. And guess what? I'm not sad. The only thing, that disturbs me are the job losses. Not having alternative work for these workers shows incompetence from the employer's side. -
SP is not available in Hi-MD-mode. You are using Hi-SP. Running times: 60min = 1h 45m 74min = 2h 10m 80min = 2h 20m 1GB = 7h 55m If you want to use normal SP, you have to switch back to normal MD - mode (NetMD in SonicStage) You have of course the same running times as with every old MD recorder. And of course no 1GByte discs. And no upload either. And no real SP from SonicStage. My advice: Use Hi-SP. And PCM for some very critical recordings.

Compared to old MD, the iRiver would have been an alternative. Reason: Most radio shows (classical radio) run in 2 or 4 hour segments. Not really funny when you have to run two recorders in parallel and setting the marks at the right place to stitch later... With Hi-MD, that problem is no more - Just pop in the disc and let it run... And that means, that the iRiver lost its only advantage for me. An advantage, that wasn't really there - compressed files are still limited to 200 MByte, Hi-MD can fill the whole disc. Plus, MD recorders are still designed for recording, I have doubts, that the iRiver achieves the same soundquality on recording.

LP2-Atrac3@105k is still better than Hi-LP. But I would prefer Atrac3@132k = LP2

Plus, the NH1 has a coolness factor, that an iPod never can have...

The NH700 IS worth the extra money. Why? If you buy the remote, battery and power supply separately, you pay more than 30 Euros. Plus, the NH700 has Microphone In as well...

The levels recorded ON the disc are the same. That counts! The output level of the headphone connector is lower, because of the lower supply voltage. You can't produce 2 Vpp out of a 1.2V supply. The LineOut mode compensates it a little bit. Another point: If you use the Equalizer to add volume in certain frequency ranges, the recorder will reduce the overall volume to keep the digital level below full scale. Yes, the Equalizer works in front of the D/A-converter. And you know, more than fullscale is not possible... But Winamp adds Volume, when using the EQ, you might ask: Winamp simply adds Gain, regardless if the signal is clipping or not...

BenJammin, I wouldn't worry much. I don't know, where you ordered it, but most e-tailers have a return policy, so you can safely try it out. Just make sure, that you don't dent or scratch it. So, when it comes, just pop in a disc and give it a try. I'm pretty sure, you will keep it.

Absolutely. Or as a friend said: Davon kriegt man ja Augenkrebs!. (You get eye cancer from that!)

Had you simply said that, everything would have been fine... Ok, enough of that. I'm wondering myself, even the Magic Wand in Opera recognized it and filled in the right data. Simple, the Avatar is 140(W) by 45(H) pixels, the html delivered contains a browser rescale to 150 by 150 pixels. Since you have to edit the templates anyway to get the Sosumi-skin back, you can throw that resizer out as well. On the other paw, I like the default color combination, nice bright and friendly, like a sunny day in a ski resort... Sure, we're patient. Work at your pace, while we keep babbling away... EDIT: Avatar is now ok, For the rest out there: MyControls --> Edit Avatar Settings --> Update Avatar --> Enter the size in the Width and Height boxes and click on Update Avatar again. Now your Avatar should look normal again. Oh, and I found a good place for the Goooooogle Ads: The interstitial, that comes after editing/submitting posts and other information.

For Hi-MD, the standard version is sufficient.

It could take even longer, if something happens on the way to the production line... However, coming back to your first questions: 1: No portable MD has optical out, except the very first one from 1992 and some professional recorders (HHB). Most possible reason: Power consumption. 2: Very possible. Something else could also be the reason: MD-players are usually constructed with sound in mind, not computer related capabilities. Remember, Sony started life with sound recording devices, they pioneered the use of tape recorders in schools... 3: You are not correct, uncompressed it is only 95 minutes, which is no wonder, as you need 600MByte for one hour of uncompressed sound. To get 8 hours, you use Hi-SP, which is a compression, but the sound quality is so good, you need good ears and expensive equipment to hear any difference. My ears are at the limit here, I cannot reliably point out Hi-SP from CD in a direct comparison. 4: I don't know about the MT77, but some here point to the N10 as the one, that is a disappointment. The NH1 is reportedly much better...

I never claimed otherwise. In other words, these guys are completely dumb by offering GPLed software for mission critical environments. First, a forum shouldn't be spidered. Never heard of robots.txt?. Or placing somethin like this into the template?: <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> Almost all spiders adhere to that. Including Google. Possibly not. Why? Sure, they would have out a patch as quickly as the phpBB guys. But when Administrators don't patch, then the worm finds enough places to live in and grow. And it doesn't matter, if the forum is GPLed or not. If there is a hole and the patches offered are ignored, then desaster will struck. And the last version not even targeted phpBB as such, but instead was looking for common errors and oversights anyone could avoid with a little bit of thinking. Sure? You do know, that techsupport is expensive? The 200 bucks you just payed for the software is just good for a few hours of that support, after that, Invision makes a loss on you... See my note about the Meta-tag above. It keeps Searchengines out. And therefore searchengine based worms as well. And if IBP had a similar hole, as soon a fix is out, you would get the same response: "Patch it please." Paying for software doesn't relieve you from the responsibility to keep it up to date on the security side. And that means: Patching! Plain and frankly, it is not their job. If you need to know about server rewrite rules, Apache.org is your friend. Which is not a problem for phpBB. And in fact, it has kept up quite well, despite the limited server power. Definitely. But claiming, that GPLed software in general is to blame, is quite a bit off the mark...

I tried SuSE. And I hated it. 7.0 was buggy, 8.2 was buggy as well. I hope, that after GPL-ing YAST, the bugs will finally take a hike... I'm using Mandrake 10.1 and it runs without any problems here. Normally it finds the HiMD by itself, but diskdrake stumbles over the missing partition table. And since the automounter isn't reliably unmounting disks, I mount and unmount my disks manually.

The 100mA less of the US-adaptor would not have any negative effect, as the US and the japanese NH1 are essentially the same, except for minor differences in Software. Using the japanese 100V adaptor on the US 115V will lead to overheating. I do not recommend that.

You don't have to reformat the disc, just enter the drive correctly as Superfloppy in fstab: /dev/sdd /mnt/himd vfat umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users 0 0 My NH700 reports as /dev/sdd , it could be different depending on the number of other USB-drives connected, KDE checks on startup for this entry and creates an icon on the desktop, which allows for easy mounting. Replace /mnt/himd with the directory, where you want to mount the drive. For easy unmounting, add an icon, containing this line: umount -l /dev/sdd Of course, replace /dev/sdd with the device name, that your system reports. Oh, and if you wonder, why I haven't added a partition number to the device name, it is simple: Minidiscs don't have a partition table. They are superfloppies...

Radio-remotes do not work with the NH600D Recording music onto MD is not possible with the NH600D on a Mac. You might try using VMWare to install Windows and SonicStage, but buying a NH800 is cheaper... You can use the NH600D as an USB-Drive, but it cannot play the stuff, you copy on it, SonicStage IS necessary for that. And SonicStage IS Windows only. My advice: Take the NH800 and record realtime until you either get a windows box or Sony decides to release a Mac version of their Software.

Is it possible, that you spend the last few years in Hibernation? You obviously missed not only the link, I've included, no, you obviously forgot about SQL-Slammer, Nimda and numerous other vermin as well, that plagued proprietary software. I do not say, that the GPL is a mark of quality in itself, but the security risks are far lower, when using GPL and other open source software. And my experience with open source is, that fixes come much faster than by any proprietary software vendor. Oh, and speaking of Santy, that fix was available in mid-November, publicly displayed on the phpBB main site, anyone using phpBB, who has not updated is self responsible for the trouble, that followed.

Good news, I say. However, I'm not that convinced, that changing the Forum software is such a good idea. First, the money, Invision takes 200 bucks, vBulletin shorts you by 160... And speaking of software glitches, they both had them too: Invision: http://www.k-otik.com/exploits/20041122.r57ipb.pl.php And vBulletin had for the previous version also an update out: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24116. But such things are normal for any software project of this size. Took a look at both of them, Invision is more to my taste, functionwise. On the other paw, you are experienced in phpBB's internals. Plus, we would have all to sign up again...

And exactly that is the point, why I stayed with Minidisc. My collection would reach well over 60GByte at 256k, adding my Vinyls, I would reach the 100 GB-mark... That's three fat iPods. I get a lot of discs for that amount of money... And Minidisc would be much more reliable as well. Instead of shuffling files around, I just grab the player and the discs I want and take off...
