  1. Yes, it does show a 1st generation hi-md disc being inserted and the bitrates that it can record in, 256 is a hi-md bitrate but there is nothing in the literature about the md that says it is hi-md.
  2. Yep, Sony displayed this model at CEATEC 2005 in October. It is part of the AnyMusic agreement between 8 companies; Sony, Sharp, Kenwood, Pioneer, Onkyo, Marantz, Denon, JVC, and Yamaha, to have an online music service that bypasses PCs and works directly with consumer devices. You connect this to your network and surf the music store via the display. The only online-music service that these devices will connect to is called "Labelgate" and was started in August with downloads in atrac format. I wonder how much music Labelgate has available right now. JVC is set to release their first AnyMusic device, ux-hd1, on Feb. 1, 2006. I suspect if this machine, or subsequent models to it, is to be distributed overseas, US in particular, the name Labelgate will be changed since adding "gate" to the end of a word implies a scandal.
  3. ^^^^Cheers, Matt When I plug the rh10 into the computer, a window opens up entitled removable disk and a folder titled hmdhifi is there. Next to the folder is a file titled hi-md.ind but it is 0 kb. I've deleted the file and no problems but it comes back. What is it for?
  4. Yes, you cannot record legacy md mode via line or mic-in on the rh10 but you can transfer music using sonicstage in lp2, lp4 bitrates. This is what the option is there for.
  5. 賀正 It is not too early for me...I'm off to Chinatown this evening after eating soba, the symbol for longevity. I have about 2,000 firecrackers and lots of other fireworks to play with. よいお年を
  6. Go to the second to last post in this thread, Josianne is selling a 5-pack of Axia's... discs for sale...
  7. Are you copying the file to hi-md in the data-drive manner and then accessing the file via computer? You don't mean that you are watching a video via an md-display do you?
  8. No, not at all, it feels solid and everything fits together fine. If I were a superhero in a cape and codpiece perhaps the daily battles with super-villians and their minions would be too much stress on the unit. As it is, this unit holds up fine in my everyday life of crowded buses and trains.
  9. There are three options with the remote; "auto" is what you describe, it lights up when you push a button, "on" is on at all times for whatever the reason, "off" is the remote won't light up if you push a button.
  10. no idea if they can or if they can't...
  11. yes, Japan rh10 has the option to keep the remote light on. The steps to do it on the 10 is to press the clickwheel for a few seconds and the menu will say "Edit, Mainplaymode, option". Click option and on next screen scroll down four lines to "backlight". Click it and choose "on". I think TLV is right, the unit has to have a backlit remote as part of it's standard package.
  12. eh thanks Zerodb, living where I do makes it easy to obtain units; sometimes too easy. Mikami, the strawberry milkshake was quite satisfying and as soon as I figure out the enrollment process for amazon.co.jp I'll be getting me some gingatetsudou999; thanks for the links.
  13. 2) Strawberry milkshake is the perfect description of the color, Mikami. 3) I agree that the blue dr77 has a gloss. When I look at the 77 in person the gloss shows up best when I move the unit around so it reflects different amounts of light. A single picture can't express the various angles. 4) The figurine is Asuka Langley Soryu from the manga series Neo Evangelion. A tough read for me but the story lines are more interesting than Miffy & Chui. I want to find copies of the original ginga tetsudou, I read a few English translations and the stories were interesting and thought provoking. 5) According to specs the 50 is 80g and the 70 is 83g. Three grams difference doesn't seem much but it is enough to tell by feel. 6) The back of the 50 is the same plastic as the front. When I tap on the different faces I can hear a difference but that is because the internals are attached to the back-plate while only the disc holder is attached to the front-plate. 7) Paint jobs on both units are fine. I'm glad that the color shades are different. I was looking at the white EH70 yesterday at it seems more a grey to me than white especially if you are comparing the white 50 to the white 70. p.s. I am going to stop off at McDonalds on my way into Tokyo this afternoon, you got me thinking about strawberry milkshakes...
  14. Yes, I do like the color so if I see a model version in pink that is the color I will choose. I still haven't bought an mz-e610; saw one on Yahoo Auction.jp last week but it finished out at 15,000 en. Since the amp of the 610 is stepping back two upgrades, I doubt I would ever use it as a listening device so I'm hesitant to spend over ichiman for it.
  15. The Sony MZ-EH50, released along side the MZ-EH70 on November 10, 2005: backside: the sideview next to Walkman symbol: sideview opposite Walkman symbol: The top is plain and the bottom can be seen in the size comparison photo below with the MZ-EH70. The MZ-EH50 comes with a color matching stand, bag, 'phones, and white rm-mc38el remote. The EH50 is like the EH70, please see Mikami's review of the EH70, except in two respects. The EH50 does not have the acoustic engine-virtuaphone technology, and the entire body of the EH50 is plastic. A view of the pink EH-50 next to the pink EH-70: and a comparative view of the two units being seen from the bottom of the EH50:
  16. A quote from Richyu from a post at another forum: "They are supposed to reduce inteference from the AC power / remote when recording. The smaller ones are to be attached one on the end of the remote cable, and the other possibly if you are using a mic I think. The big one may be for the USB cable if it doesn't already have one attached."
  17. I have used the 710 at work for recording dialogue. You can press either the forward or backward button on the wheel repeatedly until "sens high" or "sens low" appears in the display then press enter to set the choice. As I recall, "sens high" is for recording a soft sound or sound from a distance and "sens low" is when recording a loud sound or a sound nearby.
  18. "voila"...I've seen it before but never knew how it was pronounced, thanks. Now I know why I have never seen "wallah"...
  19. An interesting read. I had always subscribed to the story on Sony Japan's website that a Sony-man asked the gadget department to come up with something for him to listen to music on the plane for a business trip and wallah the first walkman was created.
  20. Yes, your right about that but I never would have explored the remote like I did if I had read the manual first rather than using it to confirm what I had already learned by trial and error. aah, I see that now. I never gave those symbols a second thought.
  21. We are using the 40elk on an rh10 which is supplied with a 35elk so the "how to" via manual is different. Too many numbers in one sentence...
  22. I prefer the color options of the older Sharp units; the last two releases by Sharp just haven't tickled my fancy. Between the two, Sony and Sharp, I still prefer Sharp if I have a choice between hearing the music in SP and hi-SP. The benefit I have received from using the hi-md units is I can get more music on a disc and the three-line remote, 40-elk, makes it easier to browse what is on the disc. The unit I choose when I go out the door depends upon how long I intend to be out for. If I am going to and from work then I will grab a Sharp or Kenwood. If I am going to be out all day and listening to music I will take the eh70 since I can load more music onto it. I do think the hd-amp in the recent Sony units, legacy and hi-md, are equitable to the clarity of the Sharp auvi but I prefer the signature sound of Sharp over Kenwood and Sony. I too am tempted to get the dr77, I like the blue unit and I don't know if Sharp will ever release another portable recorder. p.s. Since schools don't have hi-md compatible players, I try to always use a legacy model when going to work so I know that what I brought with me will work in players at school. p.s.s. I am really close to picking up an eh-50, the Bic Camera at Yokohama station has them on sale for 14,800. I assume I will eventually get one so why not get it while it is on sale...
  23. Plug-in is on the cradle, near the "made in China" line. Enjoy your new device...

    Moon River

Yep, an old term for what you said, Ishi. The last time I've seen it used was in an American western period movie called "Tombstone". Doc Holliday tells Wyatt Earp "I'll be your huckleberry".
