You could need them if you are going to go travel alot.

The reason why Sony can't allow uploading standard md's is that no current md player supports feeding any kind of data, except toc, from the disk to pc. So it isn't possible to make Ss read the discs because the units can't upload the audio data.

European Nh900 Volume Capping - Not Just Firmware.
Latexxx replied to MichaelBeardy's topic in Minidisc
It's about some stupid French legistlation which they managed to make Europe wide. -
Really?? Doesn't look like it. As you can see, wma is clearly inferior to Lame mp3 @ 128 kbps. N.b. Lame has improved since that test, atrac3 has too and so have Vorbis and iTunes Aac but there hasn't been any new versions of wma since the test.
-
That is nice if you happen to live in Iceland or northern France but the rest of Europe needs ridiculously large dishs (e.g. in Finland d ≈3 m) to enjoy that content.
-
At least 1411 kbps. That's the bitrate of lpcm on cd/md and SS copies it faster than realtime.
-
It works if your player decodes the signal to pcm. No md units can decode ac3 or dts.
-
They could have invented something which could have been possible to mass-produce. And on the other hand an industrial robot + 1.000 Hi-MD drives woudn't be too far fetched.
-
This makes me (again) wonder why Sony didn't use same type of medium for both PSP and Hi-MD. Now they are pushing portable (?) Hi-MD video machines and on the other hand PSP which can play prerecorded content and homemade films from Memory Stick.

Wav To Hi-md (raw, Without Converting Into Atrac)
Latexxx replied to DJ_THE_CROW's topic in Minidisc
My SS 3.1 can rip to wav (pcm) and OpenMG pcm has been available since 2.1. -
Or GP's dirt cheap (as compared to Sony's) 1450 mAh battery.
-
RH10 supports mp3 natively, nh900 doesn't.
-
Try to dis/connect the player when SS is running and removing and reinserting the disc.
-
Have you tried SS 3.1? http://www.sony.jp/products/overseas/conte...ww_ss31-02.html
-
Some retailers sell those batteries without the loader.
-
It was a typo. Sorry. Original version is now corrected.
-
I bought GP's 1450 mAh stick for my nh900. It was five euros (30 per cent!) cheaper than Sony's "original" nh-14wm. My nh900 has no problems loading it.

But Lame adds information, which is necessary to remove the gap, in file headers. On the other hand, there is no such thing as gapless atrac. Atrac(3/plus) just appears to be gapless because is has same block length as cd audio thus producing gapless results from cd sources.

You forgot one thing. A portable unit has only a limited supply of power. If you create an overly complex (advanced) chip, it'll drain your battery faster than you can say 'cheese'. So hardware codecs of portable players need to be optimised for power comsumption which is in direct proportion to the amount of transistors on board. This means that designers try to keep hardware versions as simple as possible which usually means lower quality. On the other hand, at least the older versions of SS had a codec which was only optimised for speed, not quality, thus rendering it worse than hardware versions.
-
Or it is the placebo effect.
-
Then your sound card's drivers must be borked if they add scms to the stream.
-
I used to use hi-sp exclusively but lp2 has really got better since SS 2.0 and nowadays I'm using it almost exclusively.
-
Except that transcoding mp3 to atrac reduces quality.
