  1. Cheers! I didn't know that! I'll download that later.
  2. I think I'd agree with your disappointments too, for all HiMD/MD not specifically the MZ-M200. 1) GUI and ergonomics could be better 2) Speed of transfer 3) Build qulaity
  3. Just wondering which people prefer. AA or internal battery?
  4. When I record from another source to my HiMD at home I generally use DC (battery) because its easier to move the unit to the source. But I read somewhere here that there can be noise from the AC if you choose to use it. Wondering what to other people use?
  5. How useful is a low end deck today. Something like a MDS-S40/41 or MDS-JE330 for example. I was mainly thinking of a deck for timed recordings from the radio and that sort of thing. What else do you use yours for and how do integrate it woth you HiMD usage ?
  6. A sad story, but really he knew exactly what he was doing. I imagine they'll be a few lawsuits now from all angles. Whats a “Sit-wellian figure” exactly? Can't find anything about it online.
  7. Update... I had SS 4.2 installed on one of my machines, but uninstalled it. When I went to reinstall I tired the full installer for 4.0 but it failed, and after numerous attempts at clearing and reinstalling, without success I decided to try the 4.3 web install and it worked. Took an age to download it though.
  8. Any chance of a SonicStage 4.2/4.3 full (non web) installer? Last one seems to be 3.4? Its handy when you have slow, or limited web access.
  9. I could have sworn I replied to this already, but my post seems to have vanished. You mean encoding CD's not recording. Basically ripping/encoding a CD takes only mins on any fast computer. However transferring this subsequently to a HiMD lakes a long time IMO. Haven't done a timed test myself so i might try just out of curiosity.
  10. I didn't know what you meant. You will rip/encode the CD on your computer, using SonicStage and then transfer them to your HiMD. How fast it rips the CD is dependent on the speed of your computer. Then you transfer it to HiMD via SonicStage. The RH1 is the fastest HiMD for doing this, but all HiMD's have pretty slow transfer rates, slower then a USB 2 drive etc. You can also transfer direct to HiMD using Simple Burner. I've never used that myself. Which ever method you use its faster than real time. It takes me about only a couple of minutes to rip a CD on my computer, but takes a lot longer to fill a HiMD. Probably 10-15mins. Can't remember exactly as I've never timed it and its been a while since I did it.
  11. Why would you want to record in anything other than real time? Or are you confusing recording with transfering?
  12. Only if you can tell me a LP player that does all that. or a HiMD that has a optical out, or a 2yr warranty or FM tuner. Most people don't move all their music to their portable they copy it so the original is always somewhere. Do you delete your ATRAC files from SS when you put them on HiMD? Do you throw away the CD's? You can get most other devices fixed. When a HiMD/MD breaks, or laser fails, how do you get it fixed like you could with a CD player? Theres pros and cons to every device.
  13. You can get Mp3 players than can play lossless files or WAVs? (same as CD), and are approx same size as a HiMD. There are some which sound as good if not better than HiMD. Which is why a lot of Audiophiles have moved away from MD/HiMD. Also inside a Hard Disk is spinning round disc just like a LP with a moving arm and everything. Thats another incredible similarity right there!
  14. I bought my MZ-NH700 2nd hand a couple of years back. Still working fine. Your unit must be faulty. I've never seen anyone report that problem with a HiMD before.
  15. Now I'm guessing but.... http://www.minidisc.org/ieee_paper.html I assume the bootcluster is readable on all MD/HiMD units. It reads that and can go no further.
  16. Do some googling on "backup strategies". Might give you some ideas. http://free-backup.info/separation-is-crit...p-strategy.html I reckon you should go with FLAC and backup onto an external HD and DVDR's. The HD is handy because it alllows you to have the files all in one place for easy access. DVDR could form your long term backup. You can add more drives as you like. You can also store them on HiMD. I don't think I would keep them on HiMD. But I'm not that sentimental about MD/HiMD or like disc swapping. As with greenmachine I recycle my HiMD for recordings.
  17. You choose to download the images by not turning it off. regardless of what connection you have. MX500/550 have an inline volume control. The 400/450 don't. The 300/350's are a lesser bud. Though all of them are cheap buds. The Sony MDR-7506 are really for a different use than the other earphones posted. That said the guys on HeadFi have some pretty huge headphones they consider portable. If you spend to long there you can get hooked into their madness.
  18. Nothing says mug me quite like a full set of cans. Turn off inline images in your browser if its a problem. Sennheisers MX400, 500's are my fav earbuds. A lot of people don't like them because they aren't HiFi. But they work for me. I still have some situational awareness when wearing them in the office or on the street. A lot of players iRiver/iAudio come with MX300's but I've never heard them. The newer 450/550 I don't like at all. Of course a CX300 is better, but its a different kinda earphone for a different use case.
  19. I've heard a lot of comments on HiFi forums that newer CD's, and newer releases of older CD's are actually mastered/engineered a lot worse than the original releases. So much so that people are seeking out the original releases. Or specific releases like the redbook on a SACD, from stores like http://store.acousticsounds.com/ I think you have to clarify what level of HiFi you are comparing. I would assume that at the low end vinyl is poor and CD good but HiMD (PCM) probably better. As you increase the quality of the HiFi, perhaps Vinyl/analog gets better and even CD improves beyond that of what possible with current HiMD (PCM) products. I can only talk relative to my own equipment which is low end hifi and low end portables, HiMD, MP3 players. Thats bottom of the scale to most people on HeadFi for example.
  20. I won't even wear PMX's on the street. Though I have seem some people with big earphones they tend to be the people you would cross the street to avoid.
  21. I reckon it depends on the unit. Theres lots of bad modern players built to a price and older players which sounded better. But it depends on the specific model you are talking about. Theres a big demand for old Discman now by the HiFi buffs. They sound better than the modern ones. With CD separates its a different story. I don't believe that if I get a High end HiFi CD player from 10yrs ago, and compared it against a £30 DVD player that I'd get the same quality at least via analog. perhaps digital would, but thats an argument I've seen many times on HiFi forums, and I get lost in the technicalities of it.
  22. So what you're saying is buy a DVD-RAM and a couple of DVD-RAM drives? How does the cost per mb of DVD-RAM, HiMD compare to Hard Disks?
  23. Theres no digital out on HiMD, or any recent MD with the exception of the Onkyo decks. So is it not an analog signal? So therefore does it not come down to the quality of the DAC before its amplified? I would have assumed an good quality CD would be better than an poor quality CD player. Or any source for that matter. Lots of debate in HiFi circles about the quality of optical/digital signals from cheap/expensive sources. Never mind analog sources. Above my head tbh.
  24. If your DVD-RAM drive fails, you'll have to buy another one to get your data. Whereas with a more popular format or HD you can access it much easier.
  25. What you are looking for is lossless compression. Do some googling on that. Lots of debate on which format is best. Also if you are going to use CD/DVD looking into the best brands. Some fade quicker than others. I'd advise investing in a big HD aswell, just in case.
