I can move my tracks between machines, but I don't use the library backup and restore to do it. I simply copy the files to the other machine and reimport them. Its faster and has no license limitations. IMO http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16048&hl= You are not using any of the the MD formats to archive, because its limitations. So it makes sense to move to a more open format with better features. If HD space is your primary concern then choosing a codec based on compression ratio's makes sense. But since HD space is cheap and the differences between these lossless codecs are not great http://members.home.nl/w.speek/comparison.htm I don't see the point of choosing solely on that. But its a free world. Personally I'd be more concerned about the openness of the format, widespread support and if it supported in any portable devices, and if its fast. That said I decided to make my library Lame MP3 and consider my lossless backup to be my CD's. As I don't have the HD space for lossless and don't really want to invest in that. If I scratch a CD (exteremely rare) I can just replace it, and that easier and faster than encoding and managing a lossless library. At the moment my equipment and my ears, find that 192-256kps is good enough (for me). If I had the time and money I'd use lossless and something like a X5 which has native FLAC support without Rockbox.

Some of the drop downs weren't working for me. But there are this morning. Weird.

AFAIK you should be able to convert a ATRAC Lossless to WAV. I assume what Syrius meant was Unless you have a problem with your SS library, in that the licenses gets corrupt or something. Which while not common with the last few versions of SS its not unheard of either. I'd never had a problem with that, even between a few machines. I'd never even heard of OPTIMFROG till I saw your post. Why use that? I'd use something more common these days, with HD space being so cheap.

Is the new forum software working ok with FF 2.0 for anyone else. Its only working in IE7 for me.

AFAIK NetMD units can't upload tracks. What model minidisc is it?
-
Well it should. I've only rarely had a problem uploading recordings. When a problem does happen it usually results in me losing the recording. Which is why I'd get a copy of it while you can.

I have 2yr old NH700 which I bought 2nd hand, and I've had no problems with, and I've not been that careful with it, but its still as new. Which is surprising as with its plastic construction I thought it would have broken by now. Unless I got a 1/2nd gen unit very cheap I think I'd just go with a new RH1 myself. But if I got a good deal on another unit I'd be happy to get one, just as a back up.

I expect you'll see MD/HiMD will only be available from the web in the future.
-
I'd record back in real time from the MD headphone out to the line in on the PC. Bit of a pain but. In that way you have at least a copy of the recording should there be a problem in messing around with SS.
-
I give up. IMO you've still got headphones on.

Think outside the box man. Your beside the artist, they might be a singer, you'd just use your ears. Everything else is layers of abstraction.
-
I never said the stage, I said beside the artist. Could be in the Studio.
-
The only way you'll get what the artist intended is by standing beside them. Even whats on a CD often isn't what the artist intended.
-
I don't think what you are doing its worth the hassle. Simple encryption would suffice on a much more convenient medium.

Not an iPod lover myself. But the latest iPods earphone out sound ok, and nearly all of them sound ok via a line out. I think the best way is that, for the money you can usually do a lot better. For less than I'd paid for basic Bose speakers I picked up 2nd hand, an older Arcam amp, Arcam CD and Mission speakers. While low end it still sounds decent, for the money.

I'd start putting it all in writing, and send it to the shop and also to Sony. Very hard to prove conversations that happened in person or on a phone. So putting them in a letter, "further to our conversation where you stated.." etc. They tend to respond better to letters. If you paid by credit card, you could just cancel the payment.

I think if a product is faulty when you buy it you are entitled to a refund. After a certain time, 7 days or something they are entitled to repair it. You'd have to check that though.
-
I assume the intention was to sell the NH1 not sell it and keep the remote. Though you can get them on ebay cheap enough.
-
Cool trick. A steath web photo gallery.
-
I think, (but nor 100% sure) that the RH1 is better because... Faster transfers USB Charging SP (original MD) digital uploads to the PC. The NH1 is still a nice unit is is arguably a better player because it has a better remote. You could record in analog realtime to the PC usng the NH1, you don't "need" a RH1, especially if you don't use it that much anyway.

Those photos aren't working for me. Do they work for everyone else?
-
I assume that should be 4x1GB HiMD disks?
-
Any photos? Willing to ship international?
-
Faster transfers would be nice, as would more capacity, not just for recording but for playback and data storage.

ATRAC3+ Hi-SP (256kbps) vs. 192kbps
Sparky191 replied to grenert's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I take the point. Personally i found I prefer the sound of 256 but I wouldn't say there was a huge difference between them, I'd only notice the difference on complex tracks like classical, and then only with very familar tracks and specific sections. My thinking is if you have to go to so much trouble to find a difference, then 99% of the time you won't notice the difference. I don't use my HiMD as a player very much anyway so I don't have a ATRAC library when I do use it, I don't bother with anything other than HiSP or SP.
