  1. @ e1ghtyf1ve: you are right... see the 'how do I prepare a battery with charge indication' part. I on the other hand wasn't really responding to you remark, but to the thing dogville said in his first post: and added the part about not charging too deeply as extra info. Still even with a charge indication, a full discharge/charge cycle is only needed once every half year... so to recap... for optimal performance: --> first to make sure the battery indicator works correctly (i.e. this is not necessary for the battery, only for the indicator and should only be done once and perhaps repeated once each 6 months): - charge the battery fully = till the charging indicator turns off (+/- 1 hour) + at least two more hours as it is only charged till 80% at first and needs a lot of time to charge further - let it play (or just use it) till it turns itself off because of a depleted battery (do not turn it back on, even if it will do so...this deep discharges the battery, which is bad) - recharge it again fully (100% so the normal charge and 2 more hours) --> secondly, for daily use: - just use he RH1 for as long as you need to (or till the battery is depleted...but do not turn it back on if it turns itself off because of low battery) - whenever you have some time in which you're not using it, plug it in (AC or USB) or plug it in each night before going to sleep - do not remove the battery when connecting through USB, as it is OK for the RH1 to charge partly (= actually better than full discharge/recharge for LiION) and it will atuomatically stop charging so continuous (over)charging won't happen...The only thing removing the battery each time will do is to wear out the battery latch more quickly so the RH1 becomes ultimately unusable PS @ Avrin: see the part about 'should I use up all battery energy before charging?' in the table I posted earlier... LiION is best if is not fully discharged often (not only deep discharged as this will kill it instantaneously, but also just fully discharged = till the machine turns ittself off for lack of power) although decent equipment will make sure it turns itself off before the battery is fully discharged, best not to do this too often (= just a little precaution) a full cycle (each month according to the table above and each 4-6 months according to my own experience) is needed, NOT for the battery itself (it is slightly harmful for the battery) but to reset the charge indicator so your machine doesn't think the battery is empty when it still has quite a bit to go --> still this is resetting the machine, not the battery!! and it isn't needed, heck not even really good for the battery itself
  2. Avrin: RH10 uses another battery type as RH1 (NiMH >< LiIon) and what you are saying just mixes the (very different) guidelines for both battery types and could confuse ppl here's a very simple guide: so... NiMH (NH900, RH910, RH10): - discharge fully (not overly deep) once in a few months and charge fully each time - avoid partial recharging through USB LiION (NH1, DH10P, RH1): - does not matter when to charge - partial charging is ok
  3. as the battery is LiIon, partly charging doesn't hurt it a bit, deep discharging does however! better not to use it till it shuts down itself for lack of battery power, just use it abd set it to charge whenever you can... read more info on battery use at www.batteryuniversity.com
  4. to be playable, music gets 'inscribed' into a special file called 'HIMD' (or something) on the disc... there are no separate MP3 files, nor atrac files. If you combine atrac and MP3 files (as I did with the disc shown in my screenshot: the first album = A3+, the rest MP3) there still is only one file containing the music. you can drag and drop MP3s, but only in two ways: - as playable music: D-N-D into the HiMD music transfer window, but this is not real D-N-D, it is just easy interface but the MP3s are nonetheless inscribed in the one 'music file' on the disc and do not appear as MP3s anymore (not even as hidden files) - as data: simple D-N-D into the disc icon. This is real D-N-D and the MP3s are visible as unaltered separate files, but cannot be played on the machine! I know little of Terminal and I didn't check this, but I did check this on PC when trying to reimport the MP3s I downloaded from mac, and even with 'hidden files' visible, there are no MP3s, only the music file at this moment, the disc format itself doesn't allow D-N-D of playable music so unless the playback system of the recorders is completely altered it won't happen... and this means it definitely will never happen for any older MD IMHO... never!
  5. indeed: a gap is the short 'gap of silence in between songs, where there should be no gap as there is none in the original cd/recording'
  6. there you go... nothing fancy, just a small screen that shows the folders and files, you simply drag the MP3s into the screen and they are downloaded to the RH1
  7. I resolved this for me personally (PC and Mac available, though mac gets most use by far and an RH1) by doing as follows: - cds that do not require gapless to be enjoyed: Lame VBR new, quality level 4 (mostly ripped with EAC + USB-stick -> mac or directy with iTunes Lame) which I can download from mac and is about 160kbps average - cd's that do require gapless: transfer with PC in HiSP (through SB) or 192kbps (through SS 4.0) this saves quite some space, delivers great SQ for portable use and allows me to create discs with mac
  8. hi shakuhachi, I'm not kurisu, but he hasn't got an RH1 yet IIRC so I'll answer some of that for you... - old MDs (legacy MDs or non-HiMDs) will only upload to PC (and only through SonicStage), not to mac (only HiLP, HiSP and PCM recorded with a mac-compatible recorder like the RH1 can be uploaded to mac) - the English software for mac is available in this very thread you are posting in (or a link to it at least) - where's 'here'? Japan? then you will have to set the menus to English with the help of one of our Japanese speaking friends, but software wise it's no problem at all - the overall response to the RH1 has been great IMHO, but only f you realize its strong and weaker points: it is a recorder, not a dedicated player; it does NOT upload old recordings to mac... not at all, excapt for the old realtime analog way
  9. EL in the namng of a remote (like RM-MC40ELK and RM-MC38EL etc) stands for Electro Luminescent (or backlit) while K stands for Kanji support (which means higher resolution as well) also the radio function has a specific letter (T?) just read the thread on remotes, as I believe it is all explained there
  10. - HiLP could be reasonable for speech, but it is very probable you will hear some degradation in sound quality - PCM definitely is overkill for speech - HiSp gives 8 hours of recording time on a 1gb disc and (especially for speech, but for music almost just as well) does not give a significant audible difference when compared to PCM just go for HiSP and you'll have a lot more recording time compared to PCM, while you will never have to be sorry when confronted with an audible artifact, that you chose quantity over quality with HiLP...
  11. nope, the 'digital amp' HD digital: - NH900 - NH1 - DH10P - RH1 (and I'm probably forgetting the player only Japanese units...but I know very little about them)
  12. if recording is your main purpose, get the RH1 if playback is your main purpose, get the RH10 (beter screen + navigation) or the RH1 or even the NH900/NH1 if you do not care about MP3 payback ('better' or more precisely, clearer/more realistic/less colored sound compared to the RH10) if you want a HiMD or think about HiMD again as it is not necessarily the best player out there for everyone (if you do not need recording functions) and do not pay too much attention to RobA fervently dissing the RH1, he's 1) too obsessed by the scrollwheel (and doesn't know...eh realize...eh aknowledge that there are a lot of other ways to navigate the RH1 than pressing FF a thousand times ) and 2) he might just be very jealous as he hasn't got one just have a read of all the reviews here on MDCF and you'll learn a lot PS: just kidding RobA, but if you insist to keep dissing the RH1 based on incomplete arguments, you should be able to see the humor of this as well
  13. uhm... 2nd gen (the non mac-compatible machines so everything except the MZ-M10 and M100) doesn't have uploading to mac either and they can only download as they can play MP3s without conversion as said before (and we will probably say lots of times before everyone realizes it): - only the mac-compatible machines were marketed by sony as mac-compatible (specifically in regards to uploading) -> support for other machines should be seen as an unsuspected bonus if it should ever pop up but the lack of it should definittely not be criticised! you should have known your machine didn't work with mac (it said it didn't in tthe manual and in other places and each shopkeeper should have been able to tell you this!), Sony never promised it, get over it - only the RH1 was marketed as being able to download from mac. now even the 2nd gen machines have been attended to -> again a bonus - Sony has yet been unsuccesful in porting atrac to mac, so 1st gen as atrac only machines will remain unserved by the mac -> HiMD MP3-transfer software. This isn't evil, this is rather logic... IMHO if something isn't present when it is advertized as not being present, it is not frustrating! just imagine, I personally would have been frustrated if the 1st gen was mac-compatible all of a sudden, as I have invested another €300 in an RH1 cause I valued mac-compatibility... but I had (and still have) an NH900... if that could do all the RH1 could (without being advertised) I probably wouldn't have invested €300 in a new machine PS: if you were lied to by a shopkeeper claiming mac-compatibility at the time, it is another story, but then you should blame/sue/molest (I don't really care) the shopkeeper and not blame sony publicly on forums PPS: my bottom-line (finally ) Sony has done quite enough evil/dumb/... things, so if you want to nag and blame sony, just pick one of those real issues, but do not blame them for the one thing they didn't do! Live with it, they added mac support because we all asked for it over and over again, they didn't withheld it from the first gens just to bug you!
  14. any HiMD setting yes, not legacy modes (these are only uploadable to PC)
  15. with the PX100 I can hear the difference between LP2 and HiSP, but not significantly between HiSP (256) and 352 and not with an VBR quality 4 Lame MP3 either (which is about half the size and which I can transfer from mac -> RH1) so guess what I'll be using? PS: it just really sucks that MP3 can't really do gapless (unless you've got a rockboxed MP3-player and way too much time to spend on lame commandlines)
  16. now that's a surprising remark greenmachine... you startled me I really don't know as I read about the irritating automarks before I even did my first recording ever... at that time ppl were still convinced the timed automarks would override the silence-induced automarks when recording line-in. So I always used the timed marks set at 60min and noticed that I still got trackmarks with line-in and not with mic-in... so I was under the impression that it worked for mic-in... while all this time it never created one silence induced mark with mic-in in that case, my apologies ozpeter!! you are correct! ...but this leads me to believe the original poster's issue really is a non-issue: - mic-in is mark-free and it is definitely more than adequate for speech (conversations) and even for (most) unamplified music - line-in would be way too silent for speech unless an external pre-amp is used, which is definitely overkill for speech and IMHO ith HiMD almost always (perhaps not when recording silent nature sounds, but even then I believe a test had shown how good he HiMD pre-amp really is)
  17. with mic-in this can definitely be overridden by using the 60min autotrack (or any other prefered min setting)on a NH900... that's how I record most if not all of my interviews which are filled with 'five secs of relative silence') with line-in, I agree (as I said before) there really is no current way to get rid of it
  18. happy birthday sebastianbf, party hard but not too hard!!
  19. perhaps there is a way to overcome the DRM and ppl that use WMA can tell you about this (I don't, so sorry) but to allow conversion AND maintain DRM is impossible... the whole idea of DRM is that you cannot convert/share/redistribute etc
  20. as I can not go and get the car without papers and I can't get the papers as everything is closed, I can't test this as I hadn't really thought about this... but then again, the sony ericsson WALKMAN mobile phones do not play atrac either
  21. uh, thanks sparks... that was what I was planning to do yeah (just from A to A but not in the shortest way possible of course )... but now I'm yearning for it even more PS: it came with a Sony CD/MP3 in-dash unit... but unfortunately no Aux in at the front (I'll be checking for aux ports at the back later... that's how I hooked my NH900 to my parent's Philips car stereo and it is ok but you have to stash the cable when not in use as you can't just disconnect it easily)
  22. hi onion...welcome to MDCF! I hope you do stick around and don't take this too personal (I just can't stand irrational blaming ) but... ... while I am sorry that the NH1's mac incapability and the proprietary and necessary charging stand disappoint you... I'm even more sorry to say that both are things you could have and should have known beforehand, as a little research (as little as reading the user manual) would have taught you this: - there was never mac-compatibility promised with the NH1, so any compatibility (even the very restricted now or any in the future, which I doubt as the mac software only transfers MP3 and 1st gen can't do MP3, nor can convert them to atrac on the fly and uploading still is restricted to Mac-comp machines so not even 2nd gen) should be regarded as a bonus and not as a 'failure' by Sony - the charging stand (and other proprietary parts) of the NH1 are things that one should look into before buying as well... part of the reason I passed an went for the NH900 still, now you've come to the right place to be well-informed for future use/purchases
  23. just yesterday I bought my very first car! I started off with a nice second hand little thing... a RENAULT Clio 1.5 dCi Community III 48KW / 65PK from 2004 with +/-30000km (only used by the garage) like this one (well, it is exactly the same car, from the same dealer etc, only in silver) I just need to get the paperwork done (insurance, plates,...) and I will have some more freedom it just really sucks that exactly today is the Belgian National Holiday annd everything is closed... I really want to go for a ride
  24. if you are using mic-in you should be able to turn this function off I believe (or not exactly off, but by setting auto-trackmarks to 60min, you could trick the machine in only putting one mark every hour) and mic-in is advisable for speech and accoustic music. if you are using line-in, there is no way to turn it off, but line-in isn't usefull for speech unless you're using an external preamp...but that really is overkill for speech
