  1. well, set all bands to -1 and listen, then set all bands to -2 and listen again... play around with it, but remember that lowering everything raises bass (but evidently lowers overall volume) I can't really compare to 'megabass', but try -1/-2/-2/-2/-2/-2 (left->right) this should give a rich and deep bass Of course ChrisG, you should use what you're comfortable with... but what phones are you using... I have a Euro-version of the NH900 (which was crippled so volume wouldn't increase above 25/30) I did hack it so it could drive my big Sennheiser phones, but still they do sound thinny with the NH900. I got myself some cheapish but decent in-ear phones (Panasonic RP-JE50 @ $25) and now I never have to raise the volume over 15-16/30 (with flat eq) and 19-20/30 (with the negative eq'ing from greenmachine)... IMHO, the problem isn't greenmachine's trick... you should get more efficient phones (or check your hearing if you already have efficient phones, as needing 30/30 for a bit of volume definitely isn't healthy IMHO)
  2. nope you (nor I) can hear a difference between lossless files (unless they are faulty)... they are exactly the same as the CD, hence lossless, no audio quality is lost. but, A-lossless comes in bitrates (which is utter nonsense for a lossless file)... it actually pairs a lossy file with the bits that were cut out to create the lossy part. Both together are lossless, but only the lossy part is used if you do anything with the A-lossless file unless playing it directly in SS or reconversion to wav. Transfer to MD, even when to a different bitrate than first specified will use the lossy part with the subsequent audio degradation that comes from transcoding lossy files. so WMA-lossless isn't 'better': it sounds the same and it still is a proprietary format (from micro$oft) but at least it is always really 100% lossless (unlike A-lossless as I mentioned above) and it also plays fine in SS (unlike non-proprietary lossless formats as flac/wavpack/...)
  3. please Chris, we here on MDCF do appreciate everyones opinion/advice... but how can you state such things without checking them first or stating any source at all?? from this and this (and many pages like those) and also from what I gathered here on MDCF (where the real MD-knowledge is of course ) the M100 is a newer HiMD (not a Canadian version) based on the RH10 but with added mac-compatibility and always bundled with a Sony mic. It was marketed at the recording (semi-)pro like journalists that often do use macs. It sells at +/- $320-350 which is still a bit more than a US RH10 (@ $250 from minidisco.com)
  4. Rostropovich | J.S. Bach cello-suiten in atrac3+ @ 352kbps
  5. greenmachine shipping to the rest of the world is very cheap as well, so even outside Europe this is a very good deal!! search for the thread (made by A440) on greenmachine's business... the guy even offers MDCF discount PS: his mics are also brilliant
  6. chris g, just follow the link in greenmachine's thread and you'll know why the eq-setting you suggest won't sound anything like the old MegaBass setting... he also explains the best way to raise the deep bass (by lowering all other bands a notch or two) and proves all of this with frequency analysis once you learn about the limitations of the SOny eq and how to overcome them ( thanks greenm.) I'd go for eq > MB anyday
  7. well thanks bananatree...ever since the first time I read a post by you on audio-taste (I believe you mentioned TMV and the arts&crafts label) I reconned we'd get along in the taste department
  8. I'm using a pair of mics produced by the honerable G. and I must say: "this guy knows his craft!!" so if you live in Europe (well, in other parts of the world as well, but in Europe it is especially difficult to find cheap/affordable decent steeo mics) and you fancy recording... don't hesitate... great gear, great guy!
  9. actually to get the best quality on MD, rip the CD's in the bitrate you will use on the MD (or in the lossless with bitrate you will use on MD) as each transcoding from the A-lossless file will use the lossy part (in the bitrate you chose) and will induce lossy generational degradation... If you really want to build a lossless library that can be used in SS and can be converted to each bitrate of atrac without unecessary quality degradation and you don't care about proprietary codecs use WMA-lossless! This does give you all advantages and it's main disadvantage (the proprietary codec) is also present with atrac but please Sony just make SS work with flac and/or wavpack... that would be brilliant indeed
  10. listening to broken social scene/broken social scene in A3+ @ 256kbps
  11. queens of the stone age: lullabies to paralyze (been putting this off 'cause I was sorry for druggy Oliveri leaving/being thrown out but hey, they still rock!!) coldplay: x&y special dutch edition (double album with all the b-sides from the singles from this album... actually more a gift for my girlfriend, but as she only listens to music on her mac I get to keep the cd... also a pretty copy controlled (whatever that means) cd from EMI so I'll be ripping this on someone elses PC with EAC and then make a backup on cdr so no rootkit-or-anything-alike gets on my clean machine ) broken social scene: broken social scene (also long overdue... great music for relaxing and dreaming off... described by my girlfriend as 'chaotic boredom'... but what does she know: she likes james blunt )
  12. Hi and welcome to MDCF, um...as the NH600 (without a D) has recording abilities (as you have already mentioned) but only through line in, one would recon that they would behave like the line in on other 1st gen models...not? (please correct me if I'm wrong here) I sure can set rec levels when going line in on my NH900... put the machine in rec/pause, go to menu/rec set(tings)/rec volume, choose manual and adjust the levels as you like this should also be covered in the user manual... (at least it is with the nH900, NH1,... ) so perhaps read it through...there might be more interesting things in there
  13. as bogon said, all remotes can stop the remote after which it powers of automatically and pressing play will power on but no Sony remote whatsoever has a real recording button but (again ) you can overcome this by setting the recorder in rec/pause and switching 'hold' on... then you can release hold on the remote, press 'play/pause' and presto...you're recording the RM-MC40ELK does however show the rec-levels (on a nice big backlit display ) so it is actually your best conpanion for stealth rec in dark situations PS: beware that ALL LCD-remotes cause audible artifacts when recording! these aren't noticable when recording moderately loud->loud sounds, but forget using the remote for more quiet recordings: crackle and static all the way through
  14. in no particular order (except for them springing to mind in this order which could be interpreted as a subconscious preference...or not ) The Mars Volta Explosions in the Sky Godspeed You! Black Emperor Kyuss Queens Of The Stone Age NIN Tool Sophia The God Machine Mogwai DFA1979 Anthony and the Johnsons Millionaire ... (and many many more!!)
  15. I think tekdroid means that if they had cosen 2gb the HiMD players wouldn't have been able to read/play/use 60/74/80min discs at all... 1gb discs aren't (Net)MD-compatible at all, as we all know (just to make sure this post didn't stir up a whole load of: "but my NetMD can't take 'em"-threads)
  16. nope, the same atrac/3/+ for 1st and 2nd gen... nothing has really changed except for 192 and 352 kbps added to the original bitrates atrac-lossless still is useless, only slightly less if you always transfer in a fixed bitrate as you can select that bitrate in the lossless flavor and enjoy the lossless playback through PC/SS and now you can even revert it to wav with SS3.4... but honestly it doesn't make sense so skip it so what's really new: -if you didn't like LP2 but HiSP was a bit too high, now there's 192 -if HiSP was ok, but not quite good enough now there's 352 to suit your needs
  17. thanks... coming from you this still is a big compliment (seeing I learned most of MD-things from you) and that MD-reset trick actually completely slipped my mind!... sure it's the first thing lmw should try
  18. hi and welcome to MDCF lmw, 1. no... the T(able)O(f)C(ontents) is probably messed up... but the data most likely is still there... not that you can do anything with it of course sorry 2. unless you can play it back through the recorder or SS it could be... but read on! 3. yes it has happened before... mainly with edited discs (trackmarks erased/added using the recorder) and it happens significantly less with the latest SS 4. yes, technically it could... still it happens rarely with the latest software. really essential recording can always be backed up in realtime first before transfering (with TotalRecorder) but this does take some time 5. it surely helps 'preventing' the issue (though technically it still can happen) and perhaps an upgrade to SS3.4 (which I urge you to do anyhow) might even let you play these tracks again (a bit of a long shot though) so upgrade (from the Sony site or the download pages here)... but make sure to use the SS backup tool or you risk to loose your previously uploaded recordings PS: dex beat me to it... take his word, he is very knowledgable when it comes to MD
  19. just checked that model here (official Sony page) and it is NetMD so only LP4, LP2 and SP (but that last one not through PC unless as fake SP) so with this model: - SP (292kbps) gives 80 min on a 80 min MD (hence the name ) - LP2 (132=+/-1/2SP) gives +/-180min on the same disc - LP4 gives more time but sounds like crap 80 min discs are the 'biggest' discs pre-HiMD can use (no 1gb discs with Net MD) so sorry if this has been answered before...but there really is a limit on the useability of NetMD...go HiMD and get a car stereo with aux in
  20. and you can only transfer in the 'chosen bitrate for the lossless track' (darn, it still feels weird saying that...sounds so wrong ) as any other bitrate will be produced by converting the lossy part of your lossless track so very unecessary degradation of SQ rip to WMA-lossless (if you want the ease of not converting before you use the tracks in SS) or FLAC/WAVPACK,... (if you use other players mostly and do not want to use microsoft's proprietary format)
  21. @ metal and scooby... I'm actually very glad he got a charger and the battery did swell in there and not in the recorder! It probably was a faulty batery and if it had swollen inside the recorder more damage could have been done IMHO: do get a separate charger for the gumsticks...especially when upgrading to a higher mAh battery... a busted battery is €7 to replace, a new recorder is €170+
  22. if you're asking about the volume hack... I don't think australian units suffer from the restriction...but anyway, we did manage to save the changes... the complete hack is described if you follow the 'uncapped thanks to MDCF'-link in my signature
  23. I'd second the recommendation of the NH700 if you can find them... very good machine, runs on a standard AA battery (which you can buy anywhere...so that's easy), no (for recording) useless extras, ... before you get uploading (your own recordings from MD->PC) be sure to read the pinned/stickied threads in the live recording section as they can prevent the most common mistakes (cause we all made them already ) so, now that we've advised you on good gear and uploading techniques ... how about uploading some fragments of your singing to the gallery once you get the hang of it (of recording that is )
  24. search for a sony MZ-NH700/800/900 as cheap as possible... these are HiMD which means that you can record in PCM, which is uncompressed (so even better than SP with the older types of MD)
  25. upgrading is always a good idea... especially with this much improvements over 3.3 (but if you do have a large music library in SS, make sure you back it up first using the SS backup tool)
