I use 1GB HiMD to store my photos and Xvid videos. I feel fine to be able to identify one year with one disc, or one film with one disc. I also store my work (.doc .pps files ) on md because I think it is the most secure media when you make a lot of rewritings. I also keep another md copy of my work at my parent's house, cause there 's no assurance company that would compense it if my house burned!

yes and MD is the most secure ( long life storage) media.

I've got my two Onkyo Himd decks directly from japan. They work and sound very good. The first (MD-105FX) I ordered from Audiocubes easy and fast but expensive The second (MD-133) I ordered from pricejapan.com: you can get the best price from all japanese e-shops. pricejapan (From time to time, the link may fail. just try again later)

You need an Himd recorder with 1) analog line input: mz-RH10 or mz-RH1 or for the best quality of the ADC and preamplifiers, use an HIMD deck (Only Onkyo's yet made HIMD deck). (you also can use an old school high-end md deck with optical output like MDS jB 940 to drive the optical input of the himd portable unit) 2) If you have the intention of playing the files on a Sony audio device, you can directly record in HiSP (256 kbps atrac3+) for very good compromise in term of size and quality 3) If you have the intention of reencoding the music in another lossy codec (mp3, WMa, OGG, aac...) or if you want the best quality anyway, record in PCM format

As I also use Himd for data and archiving, I need back compatibility...so I could go to a 68mm shell protected 20GB blue-ray disc with MD playin ability!! Or I'll go for repairing even if the garantee is over! I will pay!

I have an dh-10p. It is cool but it lacks that was easy to add: - an optical zoom - a real good flash light - a video with sound function
-
Last but not least Backing up your music/ sounds/ whatever library on CD/DVD/whatever.

I've experienced that it depends very much of the md's label: Never one problem in 12 years of use with Sony or TDK's MDs Cannot say the same with MPO's, EMTEC's, FNAC's and Memorex's
-
if you don't need optical out (I think phone out would be cool too), I think you should have a look at the Onkyo's. I've got the MD-133 model, it's good sound and estetic.

Wonder why people want so much "drag and drop". sonicstage is now a good software with no DRM. The only point is to allow playing new formats on the unit: lossless, aac, ogg vorbis, mpc... And this has nothing to do with drag and drop or no. Personnally, a car unit is what I need to fully enjoy my music on MD.
-
Himd car unit.Himd car unit.Himd car unit. Because I've Onkyo deck. But I would buy a deck with features that lacks on the Onkyo(ES or QS type with optical and phone out, current pulse CNA and ...MP3 playback). Third would be lossless playback.

Why? DVD burners also burn cds!
-
I will not forgive Sony not giving us a hImd car unit...(and full size deck)
-
The problem is with the output level and quality of portable devices, not with aac vs atrac3+. That's why so much people claim for himd full deck and car unit!
-
I asked the same to 1kyle some month ago, but he didn't answer clearly how he used Nero to put the image on the himd. My computer can boot from usb,no problem. But to create a bootable image on himd (not on CD!), I still wonder!

Great review Marck ! It 's incredible to see how much Sony improved writing and reading speed with old 80min discs! Such speed would allow an HIMD mpeg4 or even mpgeg2 camcorder...
-
I've just put a 960MB xvid movie on himd: GREAT, I can't distingue from original DVD! (XVID 1.1.0 version)
-
HiMd can play at 700kB/s that's enough for very high definition xvid/divx video or even SQ qualitiy MPEG2 video!! Sony make an himd camcorder, I will buy!
-
but as there is no more DRM/limitations with SS3.4 it is not a problem...
-
Just 2h 30 min, but Md must be understood as archiving media
-
rh-1 will transfert 120MB in 1.5 min . I think it fast enough. And changing the disc is instantanous or quite!
-
What happens with prerecorded md??
-
Himd at 3.2 euros including shipping at e-shop.com.au (australia) e-shop
-
I agree . Can't explain why Sony wasted time and money to change blanks shell format with himd (first we had these big cases and now those to little label screen). Sony just put money in R&D with himd deck and car unit!

I hope Sony would make an ES class deck: I have a mds-ja 20ES, and it sound incredibly good. The limit is the artifacts of old sp atract with some difficult music ( miles Davis for example). No doubt I would buy MDS ja20 ES with PCM and atrac3+ ! (I've made some listening tests with MDS-JB980 and I was disappointed compared to JA20ES.I think CNA were only hybrid pulse ones thzt don't reach current pulse quality: sound is less smooth, harsh...) Onkyo md-133 is very good but still doesn't reach ja20ES sound quality. More than everything I would like in dash car unit with just a slot for the disc, no necessary flip pannel. perhaps a changer (10 GB) would be interesting...
