  1. I agree. A friend of mine was so excited when he bought the Samsung D600 because it had a 2.0MP camera. Another friend was ecstatic over her ROKR. I was super pleased with my NH1. Different strokes for different folks.
  2. Ok, back to my original comment then. So now you also do not believe that the W900 is currently an iPod "killer," the original intent of your thread. (jk) I'll admit the W900 is a pretty neat all-in-one device, but personally, it's just not something I'd get. It IS cool and impressive to see where technology is going though. First, it was TV/VCR, then fax/copy/scan/print, and now phone/anything-not-mentioned-already. Amazing. It's also terrific that it works out for you and some forum members will probably benefit from your review and our discussion. For me, if I buy a cell phone, it's strictly for that. The bells and whistles are nice, but I have dedicated gear (I don't mind toting it around with me) for those extras that come with cell phones nowadays - taking pics, taking/watching videos, and listening to music. The W900 would be a great machine for a minimalist. And, yeah, those 2GB sticks are affordable, but only when compared to larger-capacity sticks like the 4GB-er. If you compare the price per GB for each: 1 GB Hi-MD: US$5-7 per GB, but a player is needed 30 GB iPod ($300): $10 per GB, complete Sandisk flash player: $80 per GB, complete 2 GB Sony memory stick (J&R retail $150 for the "high speed" version): $75 per GB, but a player is needed Ultimately, it's up to the user to decide whether they want to spend more for convenience and function, rather than deciding based on, "Oh, this device is awesome because it can kill an iPod/Cowan/Hi-MD/Zen/etc." I sure hope that most people think about the former rather than the latter. Well, thanks for sharing your viewpoints and it's great that you found a way to minimize your daily gear. Edit: darn typos.
  3. For audio/video, the oldest that I can think of is my dad's stereo unit (with turntable, cassette tape, and 8-track) and the Super Betamax. Both still work, but the Betamax is in a guest room and the stereo is in a box - basically, unused. Ivan, those headphones are cool! They're like an oldschool Eggo.

LOL, good idea! But, I'd have to go as Lois Lane. If the show is downtown, I'll see what I can do! Hopefully, those people will be wearing those around-the-neck conference nametags.
  5. Gosh, I know what you mean. These are the first 1GB-ers that I've bought and I was thinking of getting a few more because of the deal and service. The deal and shipping time was better than what this Aussie seller was offering, too. But, then I look at my shelf of standards and I snap back to reality. How many kinds of 1GB discs are there? For some reason, I thought there were only 2, but now I've seen a total of 3 different kinds - white with blue circle (what Aussie was selling), blue with man on it (what I received), elongated case (what I thought I was going to receive). Unless the first 2 are the same see-through, blue disc with just different plastic covering.
  6. Um, my post was on-topic if you notice the beginning of their thread title is: Uses for Slightly Damaged Players/Recorders..., If you really want to get technical, it was you who initially took the thread off-topic by asking "why not buy new" when this thread is clearly inquiring about used/old/damaged. Ok, Stuge, I'm done with this thread as I can see that you are starting to take offense at someone not agreeing with you. So, I won't be re-visiting this. javajeb, whatever you decide, good luck!
  7. Same pleasant surprised happened to me a few days ago. Cheers to ZosIV!
  8. Since he/she said this will be a second player, he/she will have a backup. So technically, yeah it's the first RH10, but not the first unit. I think they're good to go. Good for you. The N505 is the last and only unit that I've bought used and the rest of my units I bought new. I didn't want to shell out money for a new N505 because I was just starting out on the format and wasn't sure if MD was for me. You just have to understand that some people's budgets are limited (or they simply don't want to spring that much for it) and so something like an RH10 with a damaged screen would work for them, first player or not. So if they post about buying a used unit, then I bet they've already considered buying a new unit and it is not an option for them. I mean, sure, obviously the best thing would be to buy new. In my opinion, an RH10 with a damaged screen is more functionally worthy of keeping than a DH10P with a damaged screen - so it's also all about perspective. And if it's going to save that person $100+ compared to new, then I say go for it. They can use that money later on for say, an RH1, blanks, or headphones. Just a healthy discussion.
  9. I have. My very first and very last MD unit that I bought used - the ugly-gold, but reliable N505. The other "old" things that I've bought "new" are the NH1 and NH3D.
  10. Haha, no doubt. Don't think we ever got a real answer other than, "no meaning." Another download-only unit would be cool. Especially for us users who aren't hardcore field recorders. Or, heh, this is stretching it, but ... bluetooth.
  11. I'd still take it. There are guys who will fix these things for you at non-Sony prices (like on eBay there is a reputable MD seller who offers these services). And who knows, maybe "damaged" isn't as bad as it seems. Like in this thread, the RH10 is damaged, but it's just the display, which doesn't render the unit completely useless. One person's trash, another person's treasure.

It's because David Clark saw that Stuge bought Bose Triports. (kidding!) Aw, sorry, Ray, but I think to get into that type of meeting/conference you have to be a member or something. A lot of trade shows and stuff like that over here require membership and registration. I'm only a member of BlockBuster.
  13. That would be nice. Or even an RH1D. Kind of like how the NH1 has the NH3D.
  14. Because you'd be paying less than or equal to $100 for a $200+ unit, which (hoping that only the screen is malfunctioning) will become a great, salvaged unit. And according to the other comments, the screen isn't that vital when paired with a decent remote. I'd take a damaged player from someone for free since I can always use its Li-ion/NiMH battery, remote, or AC adaptor.
  15. Those make me wish there were designer 1gb Hi-MD discs. Yesterday, I finally got my 1gb Hi-MD. All 12 of them blue, clear, and very, very plain (compared to ^). But, they are my first 1gb discs.

Wow, look at all that tape and adhesive residue. Those headphones sure got a lot of use/love. According to their site (link also works for me), they're going to be in Midwest USA at the end of this month. Maybe I'll go visit their booth for you, Ray.
  17. Thanks for clearing it up, but your reasoning (to me) seems like this phone still isn't an iPod "killer," just based on: "At most compresssions usually used for portable music a 2GB card will be more than enough for even the most avid listeners. 2X 2GB cards will definitely be more than enough." The only reason I say this is because most people that I know of and from the forums (who switched from MD or CD to iPod/etc) chose their new player because they want ALL of their music in one device and not have to worry about leaving a disc behind, remembering what's on a disc, etc. Not that I'm saying the iPod can't be killed (because I think Cowan and Zen units are more than capable), but your reasons for an all-purpose unit (phone, video player - that's a stretch with that teeny screen, audio player) like the W900 beating the iPod still don't address (again, to me) the concerns over removeable media. Many people these days have much more than 2 x 2GB of music; some just choose to take it all with them. Again, no arguments from me and I'm not an Apple person so please don't flame. I just can't tell you how many times I've told people about the merits of MD (audio quality, gapless, unlimited storage, etc) and their reply of "but I have all my music with me in my pocket" gets me every time.
  18. No offense, but I just need a little clarification. How is this an iPod killer? From my understanding and reading of threads on this forum/T-Board about people leaving the MD format, most average users get the iPod et. al. because they want all their music with them and not have to worry about removeable media. Or are you comparing this to the iPod Nano (and smaller) since the affordable/largest Sony Pro Duo sticks are 2GB? Again, I'm not flaming or starting an argument. I just want to know your line of thinking.
  19. BestBuy in the US has Fuji 80 min discs online. I've also seen them in their stores, but no Memorex cheapies.
  20. Yeah, the back of the RadioShack adaptor's box teaches you about the polarity and tells you how to insert the tips according to the (+)-o-(-) and vice versa of your unit/stand. It's pretty easy to follow.
  21. Yep, it plugs directly in. What it comes with is 3 different "adaptaplugs." These plugs are what connect your adaptor to your unit/stand. If you look really closely at the adaptor's pic in the link, you can see that the end of its cord is flat - that's where the adaptaplug inserts. For example, my NH1 uses a different adaptaplug (larger diameter) compared to the one that I use for the E720 (smaller diameter). Together, the adaptor + adaptaplug just look like a regular power adaptor. wall socket --> adaptor --> adaptaplug --> unit/stand --> you (happy) Here's what one of the adaptaplugs looks like and the ends are colored (like green) according to their diameter size. The 2 silver prongs (top) are what insert into your adaptor while the colored part goes into your unit/stand. This doesn't support other countries' voltages (this RS one is for 110-120V only, which I think is for North America, though I'm not completely sure), but it supports a variety of devices because of the voltage ranges and adaptaplug sizes included. Glad I could help!
  22. Yeah, I also like the dark blue NH600 better, but then again, I'm more partial to any blue units. Nice clear pics. I really need some lessons from you, Ivan. I like how the AA battery bulge isn't as obvious in the NH600 compared to my old N505 (total hunchback).
  23. 100V is the standard for Japan so you wouldn't need the input to be 100V (if you're outside of Japan; I still don't know your location). If I remember right, 220V is for Australia and 120V for USA. If you look at the "voltage required," the RS adaptor can handle 110-120. So if you're USA (not sure about Canada), then you're fine. What you should pay attention to is the "power voltage" of the adaptor. The RadioShack one says: 3, 5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5 V (2000 mA). You want to match the power voltages of your adaptor with the required power voltage of your unit. The mA must also be equal to or greater than the mA required by your unit. You can find the required stuff of your unit in user manual or the original Japanese adaptor. For example, my E720's Japanese adaptor says: input: AC 100V output: DC 3V (1A) So, it needs an adaptor with 3V output and at least 1A (1000 mA). The RS adaptor works because 3V is one of the power voltage ranges listed and it can go as high as 2000 mA. The input of the E720's adaptor is 100V because it's Japanese so I need the new adaptor to handle an input of 120V since I'm in the US. And, the RS one can handle that (110-120V in its specs). As for the prices on that site, like I said, they're based on watt capacity. I'm not a physics person so I can't say if it will make a difference. If you're concerned about price, RadioShack does have cheaper adaptors (Sony's are a little pricier, I think, but smaller). I just showed you the one I use. I have Japanese MD units that need either 6.5V or 3V and it was more economical for me to get a universal one instead of buying 2 separate adaptors specifically for 6.5V or 3V. Good luck!
  24. The price difference is due to the watt differences, not really reliability (I think) since they look like they're all from the same company. These are pretty large and would be kind of inconvenient if you're just going to use it for your MD units. Where are you located? If you're USA, you can buy AC adaptors from RadioShack. Here is an example of one that will work with many MD units: RadioShack adaptor $29 It works for a range of voltages and up to 2000 mA. I bought this one for my NH1 and NH3D. Sony also sells adaptors for specific voltage/mA. Try SonyStyle.com or do a search on this forum for a thread stating the links for these adaptors. Edit: That site you mentioned has a universal AC/DC adaptor. AC/DC adaptor $8 But, the input of 220V looks like it's made for Australian voltage? Good luck!
  25. Midwest just began its tornado season. This past weekend, "high winds" cut up one of the city's tallest buildings (a bank) on the south side. Many believe this was a small tornado that passed through because there was a line of telephone poles nearby that were blown down to a 30 degree angle (I'll take pics if they haven't repaired it already). It's creating tons of car and pedestrian traffic because police closed major streets within a 1-block area due to falling debris. These are the best pics I could take from where I was allowed to stand. The other side of the building looks much worse. My complex is 3 blocks away and we're still finding papers blown from this building.
