Aw, that stinks. Hopefully, your R700 still functions as a player so that you have a snazzy looking portable to play your deck-recorded music. I used my N1 for a little while as a player-only (got that "BLANK DISC" whenever I tried to record with it). Be careful though. When my N1 started acting up, it began to not only erase discs and give me the blank-disc (when I made final attempts to record with it), but it rendered a few of those discs unusable and I couldn't record onto them anymore when using other fully-functioning recorders. But, those were the cheapy Memorex discs. Glad your deck works though!

I'm not sure about the RH710, but the RH910 cannot record in true SP, only Hi-SP. Although it can playback SP. Good luck!

Kaledi: Congratulations! Don't worry about the review so much as kurisu has already written a review/pictorial for the blue NH3D: blue NH3D pictorial/review Focus on the wedding and best wishes!

If you had a DH10P, I'm sure the album art would look "pritty" on its color screen.

That's exactly what happened to me. I inherited a bunch of MDs from a classmate who left the format and I was brand new with the format (having only an N505 at the time). She told me they were recorded from mp3 in SP. Tried them out in my brand new, SP-only deck and silence. Yup, it even looked like it was playing the discs because the timer was moving. I freaked a little because I thought my deck was broken (I got it as a gift). I ended up putting the discs in my N505 and sure enough, they were all in LP2. The good thing is it wasn't my deck or speakers. But, I was sure baffled for a while - I had just started using the MD format and had no idea about the SP/LP2/LP4 thing. Of course, I'm a little wiser about it now due to this experience. Hopefully, MDX pinpointed your problem.

Yes, which is why I said "supposed to." Edit: I would do the test, but I'm having trouble deciding on headphones and I'm not very good at describing audiophile-type things.

Some members have said that the cheapy Memorex discs should be avoided and I've had terrible skipping problems with them myself, but eh, this topic is subjective. Sorry that your experiences with your camera and Sharp are leading you away from MD. But, that's the nice thing - you do have options other than MD for music and recording. Remember to count to 10 and take a few breaths. Good luck with whatever you go with next.

Like Skradgee said, only if you have a Hi-MD recorder or downloader can you store files through SS using Hi-MD or standard MD format. If you plug a standard recorder/downloader into your computer, SS will only give you the option of NetMD (standard). Good luck!

Yeah, all the Hi-MD units with HD amp (NH1, NH3D, NH900, DH10P) are supposed to sound the same and better than those with the regular digital amp (RH10, RH910). I second the Sharp Auvi line (I have 2-DR80 myself). Many people have said the Auvi beats the HD digital amp, but it's up to you to decide. If you want Hi-MD with sound, great remote, recording ability, and looks - NH1 If you want Hi-MD with sound, great remote, download-only ability, and looks - NH3D If you want Hi-MD with sound, recording ability, and affordability - NH900 If you want Hi-MD with sound, great color display, download-only ability, and camera - DH10P If you can deal without Hi-MD, but want great sound and looks - Sharp Auvi line I'm HOPING that Sony releases a new player-only after the RH1, but who knows. Good luck!

Um, I wouldn't say that. There are plenty of "good" in-earphones that cost much less than $100. I'd go with what was already suggested by others in this thread: Panasonic JE50 or Senn CX300. Btw, paying a lot for 'phones doesn't mean you get the best. Grado SR60 only cost $69 and they are one of the best starter headphones out there according to Hi-Fi, compared to say, Bose Triports, which are double that cost. Eh, Stuge? (lol)

For a budget of $30, you can read this thread from Audio T-Board. It may be an option for some IF they're still in stock. Sony EX71/81 for $20 and $30

The NH900 does have the HD digital amp while the RH10/910 have the regular digital amp, but maybe you should pass over the NH900 anyway because some people have had trouble with its jog dial malfunctioning. (Look up the old threads on this forum.) Another thing is the RH10/910 can't record in true SP (only Hi-SP), but if this is your first MD unit then I wouldn't worry about this. If you're interested in the RH1, which beats out the RH10/910 (in my opinion), and you can wait until summer, Kaotic from Audio T-Board has just found that Sound Professionals is taking pre-orders for the RH1 in the US. Hope you're happy with whatever you choose!

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but have you tried looking in the minidisc.org main page? (under "What Are Minidiscs?" and "Technology"; "Equipment Browser" has some good detail and links on many MD units) Good luck!

Yeah, it was some guy from T-Board. I think I'd rather make cool printed labels instead of that doing transplant, but thanks for the suggestion. Just my wishful thinking that someday there will be more variety in 1GB disc styles. So, my future buy will be some Avery labels that forum members use. If you're still interested in getting more Aiwa discs, there is a seller on eBay who is constantly selling them in bulk: 30 Aiwa MD on eBay for US$25. Not sure of your location, but they only ship within the US.

LOL. Kind of ironic, but I found the quote below very fitting for that. Today, I told some friends (one was a former Sharp MD user) about the RH1 and its release and they weren't too interested in buying it. But, they were curious about what it looks like. It's a small step in spreading MD beyond this forum, I guess. Is there any hype about the RH1 in Japan since the iPod had its "invasion" over there (according to a thread title here)?
-
Yeah, I only read threads that interest me and post only where I feel like I can contribute (refraining from posting the "me too" types of replies especially). But, on the whole, I skip a good portion of the technical threads. To be honest, I think it's good that people like you will counter-act. I think that's the purpose of forums. You get both sides of the story. On a side note, I do find your (rhyming) anecdotes at the end of your posts pretty entertaining. And yikes, no way will I get to electronic guru. Too much pressure to be a know-it-all and I just don't have the technical know-how to do be one. But, back on topic, I asked about refurb condition mainly because a few years ago, I was offered (by Sony) a refurbished N1 to replace my broken one.
-
So you'd throw down money for a unit that looks as if it was dropped, sat on, or abused? True, the way a unit looks won't say much for its function, but (to me) the physical appearance does give somewhat of an initial indication of how the unit was treated. (Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying pristine appearance is equivalent to being overall perfect either, since my N1 was in mint physical condition but had the optical head crap out early in its lifetime.) Much like cars, I probably won't ever buy an MD unit that is refurbished, looking like-new or not (especially because I'm done buying units for now). But, it is nice to see that there are more affordable options for buying MD gear, and those options won't look like (used) crap. So, if I were to buy something refurbished, it would be a definite plus for the like-new cosmetics, not that I'm discounting other factors like function and warranty, of course. Edit: I just recently joined this forum and T-Board about 2 months ago, so I know you know I'm no electronic guru (or ever claimed to be one). That comment must be directed at someone else.

Looks like you can get a brand new recorder/player from here now (Sony Blu-Ray recorder/player on eBay) if you're willing to pay US$3,695.00 + $95 shipping. The recorder already comes with one 23GB BD, but they also sell BD blanks with $55 shipping: 5 for $425 10 for $645 25 for $1425
-
Exactly. Definitely not due to Sony. I think the "hype" that RobA is referring to (or what I referred to in my last post, at least) is the "hype" among forums like MDCF and T-Board, not Sony advertising.
-
If that's the case about behavior, then what happened to Ray three times? A bad seller? A bad refurb? "i've bouhgt three re-ferbished MD Portables and none of them worked right; and by the time i realized that; the warranty time was over." Exactly. Especially now after this thread tells me that the cosmetic appearance of refurbs is like new.
-
Sounds like you need an iPod. (kidding) I think the hype is good. Sure, it's a letdown for some of us seeking more options and a new player-only. But it will resurrect all those oldschool MD users who are used to uploading via real-time. Once those types of people are sucked into the RH1 and Hi-MD, maybe Sony will tempt them (and us) further with a new player-only and/or deck. It's like a drug - give them a little taste of the good stuff and they'll come back for more.
-
Is that always the case with refurbished units (if you buy from a "reputable source") - that you will always get a unit that is in perfect cosmetic condition? Or will there be stragglers that work fine but aren't cosmetically new? Just wondering if the factory will only refurbish units that look brand new on the outside to begin with.
-
Amen to that. I remember that article (Why Sony Should've Put Its Weight Behind Hi-MD) that said something like, "If you can't beat Apple on Apple's turf, then beat them on your own turf." I would much rather Sony improve/advance/advertise/whatever their Hi-MD than try to incorporate functions into their units that iPod/Cowan/etc can already supply. Hi-MD alone would be a great way to lead the pack. Make more original Hi-MD units since there aren't very many Hi-MD anything out there. If anything, I think it may bring back oldschool MD users to the Hi-MD scene. I have no need for the RH1 and like you, I'd much rather see a new Hi-MD player or more options, but like you said, just the fact that Sony is releasing the RH1 gives me hope.
