    legacy MD

I'm sure legacy is anything pre-NetMD; meaning SP/LP2/LP4. LP2/LP4 are modified version of the original SP codec and named ATRAC3. Sony has always refered legacy as SP/LP2/LP4, especially in the new RH1 unit, as it explained you could record "legacy" formats (meaning SP/LP2/LP4) on the unit compared with the 2nd Gen units. You could class SP/LP2/LP4 as 1st generation MD codecs.
  2. Right here's the answers simply for you.... You certainly can. But you need to be careful that SP mode is not "true" SP mode when using a PC to transfer to disc. Its sent as LP2 and then transcoded into SP for playback compatiblity with legacy hardware. So you will get LP2 quality unfortunately unless you record realtime through line-in/optical on the RH1 unit. These certainly can be transfered back and forth. With Hi-MD (not sure if it applies to all gen models), but you can tag each song individually with SS (SS does this for you when you rip a CD for example and transfer it over). You can also name the group and any of the Hi-MD equipment should read that also when changing different groups. So you can name a group the Artist + Album title. Hope this helps.
  3. Don't forget you can use the EQ on the RH1 to give your sound a bit of emphasise if you want. Sometimes I do on Rock music and turn it on to a custom setting. Its all down to your hearing and what you prefer/like or want to hear.
  4. I think you're going on the wrong track here trying to compare the iAudio G3's BBE technology and the HD Digital Amp on the RH1. Very simply, BBE offers "sound enhancements" to lost quality and processes the sounds files before sending out to your ears. Basically, like a DSP (Digital Sound Processor) in other words. The HD Digital Amp offers true or better "representation" of playout from the amp of the music stored on the MD. Lets say, you put a MP3 @ 192kbps VBR on both the G3 (with BBE, Mach3Bass and MP off) and RH1 and played them both and compared them...... you should hear a major difference in playback representation. The G3 will have a fair inferior amp and you should be able to hear the difference.
  5. Nope. Only Windows and (brief) Mac support at the mo. Hopefully if some kind of SDK comes out from SONY, Linux programs could be made if there's the demand from third party developers and programmers (especially here in the community). Just wait and hope. They may appear in the long term.

    Rh1 Vs MZ-Nh1

About the remote is absolutely rubbish. I can't understand why you need a huge bulky remote to see titles. The one lined remote is more than fine. Why are people so lazy in clicking in a few buttons to see the artist/title? The RH1 even instructs the remote to show you the title and artist after going to another track. I personally think the RM-MC40ELK is extremely ugly to carry around, especially if you get the sleek RH1. These RH1 vs NH1 (or any other unit) are getting tiresome. Anyway, here's a list of reasons of why you "should" get the the RH1... 1) Its sleek design - beats all the others hands down and is extremely sexy 2) Legacy upload and recording support - Recover old SP/LP2/LP4 recordings made on any other unit 3) USB 2.0 utilisation - alot quicker when transfering, downloading or uploading 4) Its new and you'll get far more support in the community here if you have any problems. 5) Sounds great! - I have no other HIMD units to compare with, but you can't any better sound than the RH1. I could go on forever with reasons, but, if you can afford it, get the newest model. the RH1 is definately a fantastic long-term investment compared with any other unit.
  7. If MDcentre.nl states it works (and they have a picture of it working!), it does. Hopefully someone else here can officially confirm it, take a picture and in detail explain what it can or can't do. To be honest, why do you want to see everything on a big fat remote? Why anyone can't everyone be satisfied with the one line remote, I don't know. In terms of the volume hack, I've done it. Hasn't done any harm to my unit and I can hear a slight difference (I use headphones all the time for broadcasting and sound levels are important). If you're not confident in doing it don't. If you are, then do it. Simple as.
  8. Mines like that, don't worry about it. Still fits though .
  9. Shame that. Sorry to hear you don't think it is. But I must say, I can't understand why you can't tell. With a HD Digital Amp..........it makes a huge difference! Some people can't hear it which I can understand, but why not sell the NH1 or MZ-N505? RH1 is a one of a kind fantastic device and will serve you longer. Less of me encouraging you to keep it and hope it goes to go to a good owner .
  10. I am slightly confused. You post all around forum lookin forward to getting it and now you're selling it? Why the bad decision?
  11. Unfortunately you can't. Sony hasn't opted to do drag and drop method right from the start. You are going to need some kind of laptop to upload music on the go. You could install SonicStage on your external hard-drive and organise registry files that will make sure SS works on any computer you use while travelling. But... you may get a problem when wanting to upload back to s computer from your MD equipment because of the copyright and you need to use the same computer that you use to transfer to your MD player/recorder (anyone tell me if I'm wrong, not sure if its any different with MP3s). You could use the HiMD equipment as file storage and put raw MP3 files on the disc. But you wouldn't be able play them on the HiMD player (which is the whole point).
  12. Well, if we get through against Portugal (should do quite nicely!), it'll be Eng v Bra in the semis! Now that will be very interesting! Then beating them to see Germany in the final. Hopefully it will follow through to what I think.
  13. Sony always charge top prices for all their products. Other retailers want to compete and will dip the price closer to the trade price they get the RH1 for. This will get less profit for the retailer, but guarentee a sale .
  14. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-RH710.html This unit in general has no mic-in. And looks like it has a port for a remote. Quite a nice sexy unit actually.

    rh1 questions

I cannot understand why anyone wants "Mega-Bass". It completely destroys the listening to any music. Leave it for the clubs to bash out on the dance-floor. If you want your ears gone in "short" amount of time, you're going the right way wanting some stupid bass-boost thing, lol. Just on the side, the RH1 can produce great bass (not over the top) with bass orientated headphones.
  16. If you mean the RH1, its already come out. For some reason, Sony are dishing out small amounts of stock to retailers meaning that they running out fast quickly, especially after the first batch a couple weeks ago. Hopefully Sony now realise its more popular than what they thought and produce/ship out more of them. I was lucky to get one in the first batch from AskDirect. Really happy with the thought that I am probably one in a couple of thousand people to have this machine .
  17. If you have discs that have been recorded on the old discs (74/80 min discs) in SP/LP2/LP4, you can now upload them to your PC with no hassle (unless they were downloaded with SonicStage, of which, you cannot do this because of DRM Protection). You'll probably be using the ATRAC3plus settings to download or record to your Hi-MD. If you use the USB cable and transfer them through SonicStage, 352kbps is your best bet, but quite an over kill for quality as it really isnt much different to 256kbps. When you upload, you can still use SonicStage, and it will either just download it onto your PC or ask you if you want to convert it to WAV. This is so you can convert it into another format like MP3, OGG or WAV for example. The RH1 keeps the recordings settings for you if you use it when recording directly to it (not using SonicStage). This is handy as a recorder will not want to change the settings everytime the unit is switched off and on.
  18. It would be difficult relying on rockbox. Still with quite a few bugs around in the firmware/software, you'd be better off with Hi-MD. You also know you an split tracks much more easily on MD units using track mark .
  19. If you state of the art, RH1 will be the way to go. Regardless of it not having a full blown colour screen (why people actually need one, I don't know). you'll have abilities to upload legacy and Hi-MD recordings, get the best sounding audio through the HD Digital Amp and know that you have the best MD piece of equipment Sony have made . Just to answer your questions clearly.... SP mode quality is actually (and been proven to be) is actually LP2 transcoded back to SP on the unit. Quality is reduced compared to 192kbps MP3 or recording directly in SP on the MD unit using a line-in/optical cable. If you need SP compatibility with your MD-Boombox, keep with SP. Otherwise, I would of said, just use LP2 and get twice more music on the disc. Not sure on this one. Don't know why you want to keep the older versions. I think you should upgrade to the newest version which is 4.0. Quite easy to use and doesn't crash at all now. Again, the second generation discs cannot record the legacy SP, LP2 or LP4 directly onto the unit. This is correct. You're still going to get LP2 quality if you transfer using SP mode on Sonicstage as this hasn't been changed and the computer has never been able to encode SP to transfer correctly. As already said, eBay (like you said) or trying to find a japanese e-tailer or some kind of contact. You're probably saying you want LP2/LP4 modes. Not sure on that. Have a look on the equipment list on this site. There are loads of deck units that can play LP2/LP4 (the NetMD units) that you just need hook up through an amplifier and you're off . Again, eBay has loads of decks flying around on there. Hope this helps.
  20. Stop being picky. grf only came with an example . To be honest, 64kbps is quite impressive against other formats. Even though it is mushy (like any other codec at 64kbps), it seems to keeps its stereo presence. Anyway, enough of that.
  21. Totally agree with you. They claim to be leaders in selling digital technology, and they know nothing about MD. Really sums them up to be honest. None of the representives in my local store probably don't know any inch of knowledge. They're just there to hassle you when you're quietly deciding what you want. I consider Currys as the "average joe" selling "average joe" products such as the iPod *cough* .
  22. The simple answer is no. For 1) That would be an extremely stupid thing to do......... and 2) is that the EQ/HD digital amp needs far more power to operate than what is given to the remote and also also needs to pass through the board in the unit before coming out into the headphone/line-out. Just to prove the point, I've just turned on EQ on RH1 through the remote, taken it out, and put the headphones directly in........... still sounds the same. I think you're being fooled by some placebo effect or the circuitry (to operate the LCD) affects the sound ever so slightly, which is probably not probable.
  23. Very good reply! Couldn't of said it better myself. Just reiterating what was just said, whats the point of downgrading just because of one niky-picky feature? You're just paying more for (ALOT!) less if you downgrade and missing out the oppertunity to own probably Sony's best MD product. Sorry for being public about this, but RH1 bashers are now getting on my nerves, and you know who you are. Nothing personally against you, but you're bashing the RH1 for all the wrong reasons.
  24. It may be possible with the announcement of an SDK coming out in relation to the ATRAC format. Don't know how "open" they are going to be, but it would be nice to see open-source developers tweak the hell out of it and revive it. Who knows .

    rh1 questions

Why does everyone expect there's going to be a feature on the RH1 for them? Sony can't please everyone. To add to the questions asked, SP 4.0 + the RH1 seem to be extremely reliable! Uploaded a 3 1/2 hour recording in about 10mins in Hi-SP quality. Then did the WAV conversion using SS 4.0. Top notch, and now I can do whatever I want with it. IN terms of the Mac usage, I can only assume it will a million times more reliable than a Windows PC .
