Uzzi
I use a long corded ear bud type headphone and clip the remote to my back pocket, where I keep the unit. I recently got 2 sets of remote specific head phones. So what’s the best way to use them with a remote? The length of the cord limits the position, and I’m used to running the cord over the back of my shoulder so it stays out of the way.I have an eh1 and the new headphones are ex81sl. BenJammin
I usually have the remote on my chest attached to my shirt or jacket.←That's how I wear it because my MDR-E888s aer short corded which sucks. Its a pain because when I'm not wearing a jacket the remote hangs there tugging on my left ear.Not cool.
Fat Tires
I normally use long corded headphones/earphones, so I coil up the remote cord and store it in my Caselogic case along with my minidisc player. I clip the remote to the outside of the case. I then store the entire setup in my pocket of briefcase.
yamagatacamille
i vertically clip my remote to my backpack; with my D66 (w/o cord extention) plugged in.
Davew
If I have a top pocket then I sometimes put the whole kit in there and clip the remote to the pocket, and somtimes I put the unit in my trouser pocket and clip the remote to a belt loop, especially if I'm at a computer. corien
I clip it to my sweater, on my chest. It's upside down for who looks me, so that I can correctly read the display.
SlowMo
nice thread, this one.. thanks! attaching the remote the right way isn´t always that easy..<-----with this md, i had my remote attached to my sweater/shirt, at my chest. this worked out very well, but now, with the ´nh900, things are a bit different.it´s quite difficult to change the volume one-handed, if it´s attached to simple cotton, because the jog-thingy puts up a rather big resistance. (->try it ! )additionally i haven´t got used to the the button layout yet (it´s kind of illogical to me, and i don´t like the "stick-form" either)so, for lack of a better place, i have it clipped at the left frontpocket of my trousers (in which i place the unit as well), usually jeans, that resists the "high torque" of onehanded volumechanges, and for other purposes, i pull the remote out, to see, what i´m doing, which requires two hands.does the nh1-remote fit into the ´nh900 ? i think it´s much better for onehanded use.perhaps i´d get me one of those, always needing both hands sucks... KJ_Palmer
Like Nismo, I use long-corded earphones, so I just clip the remote unextended to the side of my case. The Sony standard 'leatherette' pouch is excellent for this purpose - the remote clip fits nicely to the side or the orange Sony tag. The whole thing slips comfortably into my side pocket.... dex Otaku
My equipment [when using as a portable for listening] is the NH700 with stock remote [no display] and a cheap pair of Koss pseudo-canalphones. [With proper EQ they sound -okay- and they're among the most efficient 'phones I've ever used - ear-splitting volume with most modern material at 18/30 with the NH700].I like the wear the 'phones upside-down so the temples of my glasses pin the cables; these boys suffer greatly from cable-shake microphonics which are annoying in the extreme to people like myself. I then run the 'phones cable down my back [it being winter here, I wear a t-shirt and sweater overtop, so the cable goes between layers of clothing].I then pin the remote to my belt loop, with the HiMD in my opposite pocket. Pretty much the only way you can tell I'm using a portable is to look directly at my ears [my long hair obscures the cables completely]. The remote itself usually lies just under the edge of my sweater/hoody/t-shirt/cargidan/sexy beast top. The most obvious thing about all of it, actually, is that I'll occasionally stare into space while appearing to play with my right front belt loop.I do something similar when out wearing winter outclothes, like a jacket, but the player gets moved to a jacket pocket, and the cables get run through it as well. Once again, pretty much the only what to tell I'm using a portable is to look directly at my ears.Either that, or in the case of using the unit while I'm wearing jeans, checking out the barely-discernable square bulge in my left pocket. Chances are it would only be noticed by someone trying to check out my "package" [so to speak] anyway, which is a more than rare occurence, so again - no one notices.I find the basic stock remote, the el-cheapo no display version, to be just fine for my usage. I pretty much never look at the display when I'm using it for listening; I'm using walking somewhere or something, and even with a remote this would just be an interruption. Aside from that, I generally know what's on all of my discs, and can skip forward and back among albums and tracks without ever needing to look. I never use the more advanced playlist-type functions. It's just skip forward, skip back, whatever is simplest. It helps to have a good handle on what your music collection is, I suppose.
zerodB
I usually just clip the stick remote to my shirt (if I'm wearing a proper button-up one) or to my jacket (sometimes with the cord through a button hole!). If i'm wearing a dress jacket it's usually the shirt, but sometimes the inside pocket works well. The only problem are T-shirts - they have no obvious place to clip. A backpack strap never works for me cos the remote just falls off...At least the 33EL has a detachable clip so the remote can be orientated in the correct direction, even if this does make the controls somewhat weird. streaml1ne
My NH1 goes in the jacket pocket with or without remote. If the unit itself had a way of selecting random play I'd pretty much never use the remote for mobile play. As it is I connect the remote set random and disconnect it whenever I change discs. I've got the short-cord-behind-the-head one piece headphones from my original G750. The cord length is perfect when I've got the recorder in my jacket pocket. I plan on getting a new set of portable phones for summer. Something with a 1m cord so I can slip the NH1 in my regular pockets and not need the remote. daremo
Usually clip it to the pocket on my coat and toss the player in my bag. Though sometimes I just plug the head phones directly in and hold the player with a deathgrip as I walk around.
Uzzi
Lots of great ideas here, but I live in a temperate climate, so T-shirts are the only way to go. I’m stuck with the long corded 51LP for normal use. They'er the same sound quality though so its ok. The problem is; the remote takes a beating, being at my waist.I did find a way to use the 81sl head phones for my bicycle rides by poking a small hole in my jersey 6 inches below the left armpit and poking the remote clip into it. Then running the cord to the back jersey pocket where the MD is, and the head phone cord behind my arm and over my shoulders. This makes it simple to access the remote and keeps the cords out of the way too.Note: I also have an NH600D which has a remote plug-in, and the 40ELK remote works fine with it. This unit didn't come with a remote, since its the cheap one. I also tested the 33EL remote, and it functions well too. Fat Tires
Why not just leave the remote at home?
Uzzi
Why not just leave the remote at home?←It's possible, but the eh1 is hard to work with using its low profile buttons on the player. I use it at work where I tend to change volume, tracks and stop a lot. I don’t want to take the player out of my pocket every time I get interrupted. I do like that idea, and at times when I don't need to mess with the controls, I do like to hit shuffle on the remote and then remove it, so its lower profile. That’s how Ive used it for biking and it works good.
Christopher
Ben, once you have a 40ELK, you can't leave it seperated from a MD unit - it just brings out the functionality of your device tenfold and has a "cool" factor that makes it hard to put down. I use it with the remote about 50% of the time just so I can read track titles and change the sound properties.Ben, once you have a 40ELK, you can't leave it seperated from a MD unit - it just brings out the functionality of your device tenfold and has a "cool" factor that makes it hard to put down. You're probably right, but I've been using the lowly MC33EL so I've yet to experience the bliss that is the MC40ELK.

Fat Tires
The RM-MC40ELK will function is all Hi-MD units. It even functions in NetMD units and personal CD players like the D-NE900. Not all features, like the three line display, work with non-Hi-MD units.

Embio
I have my NH900 in my left pocket in its bag (love that bag...) and then the remote wire comes out, thruogh the loops in my jeans, and to my right side, then my 712s with the chord extension go back through the loops to the small of my back and up my back! sorted!the same goes for my D-EJ2000, by the way, if i use a 40ELK with this CD player, which display lines will be used? Uzzi
Oh yeah, don't use the remote in the rain either. Mine seemed to be working fine while in a rain storm, but an hour later the desplay and backlight stopped working. The controls still operated normally though. It took nearly a week for the thing to dry out anough for it to start working again. I thought for sure it was a goner. The player was fine because I put it in a nicely sealed ziplock freezer bag. Next time Ill just detach the remote and put it in the pag where itll be safe. Edited January 13, 2005 by Uzzi
Black_Shoulder
I have the remote clipped to my top. I find that it works best when I'm wearing a hoodie, coz the remote can clip nicely to the strings that are hanging.
JavaGeek
I bought the CaseLogic bag for my minidisk, and I'm very happy with it. I have it attached to my belt on the left side, and from there I take out the remote, which I usually attach to my shirt (to the pocket or between buttons). I also bought short-corded earbuds, so I don't have to deal with the long cord, and the distance between the remote and my head is ideal for the short cord. I wear my MD all day. Since I put on my pants till I take them off. Sometimes I disconnect the remote (when I'm going to meetings and such), and it only looks like I have something in my belt. I also carry a cellphone on the other side, so I'm waiting for people to start calling me Batman (I guess I still need a couple of more things to attach to my belt to fit that description, though)
