MZ-RH10 Titling Error Will Be Serviced By Sony

As most of you may or may not know, there is a rather annoying issue with the US version of the MZ-RH10:

As you can see, there are quite a few letters missing. Mentioned throughout the forums, this issue has been quite the annoyance with no reassurance from Sony..until now.

Straight from my contact within Sony:

Tokyo is aware of the issue. At present time, owners can send their unit into service and we'll manually upgrade the device.  The models coming off the line now have been updated with a running change so going forward there shouldn't be an issue.

An interesting move by Sony - I have inquired to see if there is an upgrade in store for other much more important problems, such as the recent MP3 woes that have been mentioned in the Hi-MD forum. Regardless, is this a stronger signal that Sony's portable audio division is paying more attention to the consumers?

I will update this post accordingly by the end of this week with the proper address that you may send it to for repair.

Hi, do you know, who will pay the shipping and insurance from Europe ? If all the costs will pay Sony, it will be OK, but if we have to pay an extra approximately about 30$ or more for this, it will not be possible for me, too expensive.

The only way I would have my RH10 fixed by Sony is prepaid shipping. It's their fault, not mine. I never use titles unless it's from SS. My fingers are too big and I don't have a need for titles on the RH10 since it is mainly a recording unit only. It's not an issue to me but I can understand why some would want it fixed.

I understand the disturbance but honestly who still enter title name directly on the unit? laugh.gif

I found funny that more people complain about that issue of titling than not being able to record in "legacy MD format "as you called it.

Most of people who has their brand new RH10 back up that issue of the "legacy format" by using SonicStage then do the same with the titling thingy LOL which is btw WAY MORE easy.

ps: well the problem of old MD mode is still not really solved by this way but it's an other topic...

Wow, that's quite a bumble on Sony's part. To be perfectly honest, I laughed out loud when I read this.. it's just so ridiculous. I got the Japanese domestic version of the RH10 and thus was not aware of this (I've actually got about 60 extra characters relatively) but I sympathise with all those who have this problem. Sony should definitely pay for all shipping charges ( to and from ) after all, it was their mistake. Wish everyone the best with getting it resolved.

...hmm, makes me wonder if the JP model has the same 'issues' with the MP3 playback

where were you when people that has the RH10 claimed 2nd HiMD can do legacy MD disc (through SonicStage only)?

blink.gif What does any of this have to do with the context of the thread? We're talking about a BUG, which is completely different from something that was intentionally left out. This is a genuine screwup that Sony made. Obviously if they made an effort to beta-test their products before releasing it into the market we wouldn't be having this problem. So people are paying 300 bucks to be Sony's guinea pigs, how about that?

What if I'm recording a bootleg and I want to title the tracks before I forget the names? Having a alphabet set that's missing M N O wouldn't be very convenient, would it?

The lack of testing of the units amazes me most of all. This slipping out into the public is embarrassing on so many levels, I can't begin to describe it.

With all of the reported problems and deleted features on this unit, I'm sure glad I bought the NH1 instead. biggrin.gif

bah!!!

if you want to record live, the glowing blue display of the rh10 is a godsend!!! i shudder when i think of the dark days (pun intended) of live recording, when i had to try to aim my dr7 at whatever light source might be present (usually none) to try to ge the recording levels right. with the rh10, i just sneal it out of my case logic case momentarily, check the record levels, put it back, and enjoy the show smile.gif last time i recorded a live set, the security was busy chasing people with camera phones & never bothered me, even when they passed me by while i was checking levels!

try that with an n1 & a FLASHLIGHT rolleyes.gif

My RH-10 arrived yesterday, I love the OLED and having such a screen induced me immediately to enter track names which I would think be true for anyone who bought this model. So I discovered the problem with the titling right away. I am a MAC user so am one of those who don't have the luxury of doing the labeling or titling except by manual means. I am anxious to know what happens with this purported "recall", and need to decide if returning the unit and ordering a japanese model might not be the way to go, given what I've read here and elsewhere on this forum.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN SONY'S REPAIR SERVICES

According to the email I received from SONY... They dont have an exchange currently available, but I can still send in the unit and wait for them to contact me. Hmm..

Also it appears that you at least get a discount through UPS for shipping..

I'm still trying to decide if it is worth sending in my unit for service. Mine also came with a faulty pair of earbuds (one was waaay shorter than the other) so I wonder if they will switch that out for me..

I'll keep you guys updated if I decide to send it in.

you don't happen to mean the left one is shorter by about 12 inches? tongue.gif this is the easy to wear neckstrap type of earbuds they are dumping on the world nowadays... (get Sennheise MX450's if you like a better sound and symmetrical buds for little money $15)

uhm... i think that, like almost all earphones, it's like that! the cord of the right earphone must go back around your neck and then arrive to your right ear smile.gif

I still don't have good information about what procedure should be followed when exchanging the unit. I will see if I can obtain more information asap.

You can call sony for a replacement at 1-800-222-7669.

I sent mine in and should be receiving the replacement this week. I had to pay for the UPS shipping. I think they offer a discount on packing only, not the shipping part. I feel jipped by the whole situation.

Are they actually exchanging the unit? Or are they upgrading the firmware on your original unit?

The information they provided to me stated that they did not have an exchange available.

Did they have you send all of the materials that came with your unit originally, or just the unit itself?

Also, as far as the earbuds... I hate them. I didnt know that they were supposed to be made the way they are.. I find them very annoying. . I tried them the way that was explained here. I dont really like wires rubbing the back of my neck so much.. dry.gif

They are exchanging my unit. We tried to do some resets of the unit over the phone before i sent it in, but that did nothing. I sent it in only days after I bought it. I considered just returning it to the store where I bought it, but I felt the store may not take it back, or may not have had another one in stock. I was wondering why there was no information on this website at the time. Glad to see I am not the only one with this problem.

Sony told me since I had just bought it I could qualify for an exchange. I litterally used it for a couple of days. I did have to return _everything_ Luckily I hadn't used the disc yet, so I could return it as well. I was tempted not to return the disc but didn't want them to give me any excuse for not making the exchange. I am also lucky i didn't record anything important on the disc either.

The character palette logically had all the characters in the unit, but not all of them were visible. It was more of an annoyance for me. Sonic stage titling worked fine. Being able to do titling on the fly at a concert after making a recording is a great option. The display is also a tremendous improvement over the mz-nh900 (last years model). The display on that unit just plain sucks. It has a smaller display than units from years ago!

Sony seems to love to add one or two great features then take away other key features. This is what keeps them from being "great" in my opinion. The minidisc does have uses that no other device offers, so that is to their credit.

I agree with the earbud scratching the back of the neck, it is annoying. The plus for earbuds like that is that they do not fall to the ground when you take them out of your ears, and they are extremely light weight. It would be great to wear the giant dj headphones and get great sound when walking about, but those are so bulky. The "assymetrical" earbuds are great, but do take time to get accustomed to.

cheers! and thanks for everyone's input about this issue!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I guess I came across this forum several days too late. I just received my MZ-RH10 a few days ago. After reading this thread, I tried to edit a title and sure enough, it is missing "XYZ" and "JKL" in upper and lower case letters. Now I have a knot in my gut and I'm waiting for a response from Sony and the E-tailer I bought the unit from to see what they will have me do. To make matters worse, I bought the unit to record a musical class I will be taking the second week of July. So the clock is ticking. I guess time will tell how it goes.

uh, no real worries... you can use the letters, just not see them... besides, titling through SS (even when you don't want to upload) is much easier.

It's a bug...but not such a big one, just title them by a simple number or if you want to do a bit more trouble, by date/hour and later when uploading give them decent names (although I mostly stick with date/hour)

just enjoy your musical class and recording it...
