Hullo.

A few years back Sony introduced a MD recorder for the PC. I seem to remember it fitting into a 5 1/4" drive bay and not really being all that good. However, having searched through most of the equipment listings on the main site I can't find any evidence of it existing.

Am I going mad?

I think that one was only used for data. Meaning, you can't make music recordings with it, and it wouldn't take regular MDs. I think the girl in "The Art of War" with Snipes uses it. Oddly enough, she's using a red Memorex music disc. laugh.gif

Don't know which one you're looking for, but here are some odd md data devices:

I wanna see these shiny things with hi-md rolleyes.gif

I believe there were MD Audio recorders for the PC, but they were only available in a very limited selection of Sony Vaio PCs and Notebooks.

Thanks for the replies guys. Any ideas what the model number was?

Model Number is PCGA-MDN1.

I found a shop for Germany:

http://www.directshopper.de/sony-vaio-pcga...ttenlaufwerke_p its 200 Euros:

I am not sure but it may only fit into these NV series notebooks:

[attachmentid=781]

This seems to be a special interface you can use for several things like a num-block, data drives,.. :

As someone who used to work for Sony (Western Headquarters) it is very frustrating to see them release MD products in Japan but never in the US. I have never understood the lack of support for the MD. The PC MiniDisc Recorder you're thinking about is:

Sony VAIO PCV-MX

We produced 2 models MX10 and MX20

The shitty thing about this model is the US Adversting and Marketing department decided to remove some of the functionality. This model in Japan had the ability to play the MD and the built-in stero sans the PC being powered on. When we worked on the NV series we had ever conceiveable component that would plug into the NV except the MiniDisc. We never pushed this when this were ordered since MD was a popular format here in the states.

I still have my NV series with the SubWoofer component but damn I would like to get my hands on that MiniDisc piece.

I remember this unit as well, although it fit the 3.5" Drive Bay. Sony MDM-111.

Great storage medium, but good luck trying to find those MD-Data1 disks!

At least now we can use standard MDs and Hi-MDs for music AND data. That's what Sony should have done from the start.

Hear hear. Pity about that SonicStage aftertaste. ;)

MD Data sounds like it might be a fun format to play with if you can get one cheap (with disc). Obscure tech = good geek fun.

I saw that there is a firm out of the UK that is selling modified SCSI versions of the MD Data drives (MDH-10). The nice thing about them is that you can upload SP recorded discs at 5X, and edit the waveforms with there included software. You can also defragment MD's, do TOC rescues and a bunch more. It is really awesome kit. Here is a link: http://www.esdl.co.uk/body/mdte/mdte.htm

It doesn't say where to buy them on the site. Or even how to order.

Well certainly this is a nice unit but with these kind of features and

the fact it comes from the UK makes me wonder if the price tag is below

10000 $ per unit or not.

I was wondering, I am considering to buy a PCGA-MDN1 bay USB drive, what software

other than SonicStage could be used with it to access the data on a disc.

If someone could help, would be greatly appreciated.
