reefbeef
Joke or not, my understanding is that the electronics division has to get permission from the entertainment division:"this agreement came with the proviso that we never innovate on our own again without explicit permission from them." anont
I realize minidisc.org is pro-use, but it's about time the management abandons their "this is great hardware, hamstrung by the Entertainment department" line. There's nothing futuristic or impressive about a 1 gb floppy-sized disk, or transferring via USB 1.1 via Sonic Stage (hoping the software doesn't crash, 3.4 is shit), or the very weak line out, or the weird menu-heavy interface, or the displays being used... The criticism may have sort-of-applied a long time ago, but not now, Crikey.

rayzray
and your alternative is ???sorry it took so long to answer; i was out DJ'ing with ONLY my 500 DJ'in MD's (standard of course).had to replace my MD-Deck that dies at the last job; have to admit; DJ'ing with my MD-Deck is "Nice and Easy".but,, time is marching on; and i will only have so many time i can replace MD-Decks; (There are no more to buy to replace them). even though i a retiring from DJ'ing; i still want to keep the music available for Family DJ'ing and Studio work.i NEED a better way to go now; and, DVD's are the way to go.so, i bought 5 DVD Recorders and % DVD players;all the same brand (Panasonic); and am ready to start a NEW format for holding songs.i can't rely on SONY anymore; they are not relyable; and they are liars; and ther stink. (expecially that theactrical event they conjured up about spying in out computers with this geek-spy software.the only good Geek is a non-Sony Geek. Tweek will comfirm that.i hate saving music IN the PC ; so DVD is the way; hey; Jay; are you out there; Say; have you got 10 more DVD-RAM discs for my sake, Jake?but; as i said before; i wish yous gouys good luck with Sony Baloney; and for your sake, lets hope i am wrong; but , probably not.all i know is; i will NEVER use MP3, 4's,and 5's, maybe 10's someday when i am an old man running around after nurses with i-pods around their necks; around the beds. i will make a Boomerang out of my 2Hi-MD900; or Bolos with the two of them and catch the nurses feet; and discard the i-pod as a desert animal discards a carcas's stomach! WaywardTraveller
Here's my opinion: minidisc will almost certainly be only a niche-market, unless something extraordinary happens. I don't think this "something extraordinary" is impossible; I mean hey, Family Guy came back after getting banned, so you never know. But think of it this way; think of all the minidiscs out there; think of the fact that Sony people read this site and take at least some of our ideas seriously; MD isn't like portable CD players or iPods, but there are still a lot of units and users out there - enough to warrant supporting them for some time yet.oh...yeah, I got fooled too. peaceWaywardTraveller

Entropy
Here's my opinion: minidisc will almost certainly be only a niche-market, unless something extraordinary happens. MD isn't like portable CD players or iPods, but there are still a lot of units and users out there - enough to warrant supporting them for some time yet.And that's probably a good thing for people like us.If MD is a niche market, Sony won't waste design time and money on frivolously cute units and repackaging the same product 3 different ways. They won't care so much about DRM (a change which we've already seen) because, well, nobody important uses MD anyway. They'll design and sell machines at prices that make profits, instead of trying to compete on price with everyone else, since the people who *need* these features (like the press) will pay for them. &c.~ Kiran <entropy@io.com>
JPSnuffy
Thank God this is just a April Fool's Joke. ZosoIV
I think the real joke materializes upon the realization that this whole "is MD dead?" discussion has been going on for nearly the entire life of the format. I remember getting stern warnings from the shop where I bought my first deck that MD "wasn't long for this world," and that discs were supposedly "going to be discontinued," et al. And that was in the 90's! Of course, there really weren't any alternatives back then either - MP3 players and HDD recorders were still several years away. Flash still cost about $200 for a 32MB CF card, too. Ah, the good old days. MD'ers do seem to be a paranoid crowd, though
MDGB2
Yeah, but if they,d just make a flamin' Hi-MD deck then I can do my own recordings for a good number of years and not be so paranoid about the survival of the format anymore...It's the (at the moment) exclusivly portableness that we don't like, no precious, we don't.... oti
What evidence do we have that the RH1 WON'T be the last? April Fools jokes aside..!Well, that's easy to see. When at first you introduce a rather complete machine (first generation) and secondly come with a stripped edition (second generation) but suddenly come back with a machine (third generation MZ-RH1 to come) that is equipped with some of the earlier abandoned features like: back to SP handling, time/date stamp, line out and I hope more like speed control and pitch control, than - at last for me - it is very likely that the dip is over and the inventors finally decided to pull hard on HiMD.Especially the return of first generation features make me think so.
