0 bob123_
Ascariss,Just curious: before the announcement of this player you referred to you being happy with the amount of storage this device had in it assuming all plans were still in order. Was the 8gb what you were expecting?
0 Ascariss
yes and no, I can't elaborate further though hehe. but I currently own both the A3000 and A1000, and I hardly use the 20 gigger for anything, it is too large and cumbersome and the A1000 is so much better. I hardly even listen to more than 3-4 hours per day with the player so I don't need more than 10 gigs. 6 gigs is good, but I tend to use 320 mp3s and I make my own mixes which I tend to encode to 320 and they take up a lot of room.anyways, all I can say is sony ain;t done yet. 0 bob123_
Ishiyoshi: Thanks for letting us know. In terms of these "other" announcements: can we expect them in the next few weeks, months or before the end of the year?
0 T.W.G_
can we expect them in the next few weeks, months or before the end of the year?in my personal opinion it will just be a few weeks because here in Germany we're always the last people to get new Sony products They now have listed the new Vaio UX Series (ultra mobile PC)for preordering in the online shop for 3000 Euros and those machines are available in Japan and the US for a few months now! 0 navsimpson
So... thoughts?I kinda' like it - but everyone seems to disagree with me. I was initially disappointed, but having now seen it, I think it looks slick. If it has the same crazy 30 or 40 hour battery life that the s6/700 series does, then I dunno - seems like it'd be a step in the right direction. -Nav
0 imagine_
Are you serious? The new walkman looks horrible! What happened to the usual sony styling and slickness? The front looks completely cluttered and the sony logo at the top looks horrible! I was expecting something like the new samsung yp-k3 or something, but this is just aweful . 0 bob123_
I like the design too. I like that its simple & kindof retro & i can imagine it feeling very sturdy even though it is small. i lalso like that it is different to its competitors. can't wait for the further deatails! 0 Ascariss
Are you serious? The new walkman looks horrible! What happened to the usual sony styling and slickness? The front looks completely cluttered and the sony logo at the top looks horrible! I was expecting something like the new samsung yp-k3 or something, but this is just aweful .cluttered? it has 3 buttons just like the A1000 and A3000. the extra text is for people who have never used a sony before prob, ie press and hold back to go to the main menu, and press and hold option to turn it off, simple. I take it you have no owned an A series before?
0 imagine_
I've seen pictures of the A series HDD players (and owned an A-608 flash) but for some reason the text did not look as obtrusive as it does on this one. It might just be because the picture is bad, or because of the non-reflective surface, or that everything just looks bigger since the overall size of the walkman is smaller.Let's wait till some official pictures and pictorial reviews come out... I think those will look better than the pics we have now.
0 navsimpson
Yeah, I still think I like it - in person I imagine it will look quite good, especially in black. It's all a bit moot for me - I'm not in the market for a flash player, or any player really. Still - even though I was initially disappointed with the announcement, I guess I've just found it odd that the reaction to this has been muted to say the least, when, to my mind, it definitely seems like a step in the right direction for Sony. Given that this will do things that the Nano can't - play video and record to PCM and ATRAC (and MP3/AAC according to another site) - depending on what they do with the software, it might actually be a real competitor. Since they'll have to find a way to put video on there, perhaps it's finally time for 'much-improved-but-still-crappy' Sonicstage to kick the bucket. -Nav
0 Ascariss
here is the low down from what I can gather. again this is all assumption lolthe unit has to play these format straight out of the boxmp3, wma (prob no DRM), aac (no drm), atrac (a sony player with no atrac would create a hole in space and time), and Linear-PCM (otherwise wtf?)seeing as the unit is basically an evolution of the older A series, the following is prob going to be included.-a cheesy start up lol-6 band EQ-clock-screensavers (colour now)-9 language choices as in A1000-bookmarks-top 100-play historyprobably a calander and clock will be included, gimmicks, but I do use the clock occasionally since too lazy to take out cell phonewhat about video? well being sony, I hardly doubt they will allow divx or xvid, seriously come on. there would have to be some kind of a encoding process that would allow different video formats to play on the device. lol its like atrac all over again but for video. prob something along the lines the ipod or zune uses is my guess.Doesn't the PSP have this?according to a site the psp does use this, and converts the files to MPEG4 which is the format that the original A1000 chip supports. so I just hope the process is painless and easy. as well, I hope the screen on the A800 is a widescreen one and not 4:3. haha found this on a site regarding the programTOP TEN REASONS IMAGE CONVERTER 2 IS BUNK It is not free, and most bootleg solutions are. -It can't make full-frame MP4 video, and anything less (unless you're dealing with TV-sized clips) is a waste of pixels. -Its best framerate is supposed to be 30FPS, but it does not render all of those frames properly. -It has no settings to optimize quality for given clips -Its "Pictures" feature does nothing that a standard image editor can't, and isn't customized for PSP. -It produces file sizes nearly as big or even bigger as other programs can do with full-frame, clean-running equivalents -Its "To Be Transferred" queue still requires you to browse directories if you pre-compress, negating the point of having an easy-to-use application -It has no features for managing music -- this is just Image Converter software, and you have to get Connect software if you want the audio equivalent (Sony's Connect is also free.) -It is not in any way configured for making PSP use easy, so you can't transfer picture/movies folders, you can't transfer into the specific PSP Photo directory, and you can't be sure that you are transferring to your PSP unless you understand directory structure. -It has inspired nothing funny for this list, and Top Ten lists should always be funny ... the software's the joke here, folks. ouch. so perhaps in the near future, users will be able to make bootleg programs that will allow easier conversion and transfer to the A800.if sony goes the drm route with too many things on this device, it won't be such a huge hit as they want it to be. I really want sony to do well here, I am probably planing on buying this to replace my A1000 and the brick, aka the A3000.as a side track I recently saw thishttp://translate.google.com/translate?u=ht...=en&ie=UTF8-2, 4 8 GB-plus 2 more gigs via microSD-colour LED-fm radio-recordings-pictures-videohmm I just hope sony adds fm radio, and recordings to the A800. 0 Shinji Ikeda
The clock on Sony Germany is still counting down, but all the numbers are negative. 0-11:0-. Strange. It was suppose to be announced 10 hours and 43 minutes ago. I wish they would either announce the new product or take down the program.
0 Shinji Ikeda
It still does not make any sense. The program is using the clock on your computer to calculate when the new walkman will be launched. It is 2:59 AM in Germany now. When shifted to Germany, the program on Sony Germany states 0-3:00:0-. It seems waiting until March 2nd is the best bet.

0 navsimpson
Thanks for the link!So there it is! Still like it - am I nuts? They are, however, sticking with Sonicstage and Image Converter 3. I guess that means that there will be podcast/vodcast support, which is cool. Would have been nice if it were all integrated, but baby steps right.[EDIT] - Just noticed, it has DSEE built-in and also mentions something about drag n' drop - though it only says that in reference to video and photos, so it may not apply to music. Pretty damn cool though. Does anyone from the UK know how that sort of pricing compares to other players of that capacity? I noticed the 700 series has been dropped 50 quid. -Nav Edited March 1, 2007 by navsimpson
0 doclloyd
199.99 GBP = 392.415 USDUnited Kingdom Pounds United States Dollars1 GBP = 1.96217 USD 1 USD = 0.509639 GBPI like how it looks.. esp. in black! But I want to read more specs and details than what's posted there. Any sort of drag and drop support on a device like this is excellent. I haven't used Image Converter software before, but I imagine it allows drag and drop of all multimedia files. I'm waiting to hear more details and specs, like anticipated battery life, how it handles widescreen videos since it's a 2" 320x240 (4:3) screen, etc.
0 sdfzz_
hmm I was hoping to see a widescreen but I like it..all the sameI noticed that 4bg versions have longer battery life than 2gb versions...Hopefully they have text(for lyrics) and photo viewer..Thank you for the link
0 doclloyd
Yea, looking good.@sdfzz: I think the "Plays X hours of audio and Y hours of video" is capacity, not battery life. I looked at the 8GB model first and thought to myself, "Wow, 130+ hours of audio playback on a charge would be incredible." And it didn't make sense after looking at the 2 and 4GB players with smaller battery life. Photo viewer is mentioned. Not sure about lyrics support, but would be nice. Let's hope that Sony supports this product line for a while and brings some updates to it via firmware upgrades.
