  1. Agreed. Although I now own an NW-HD5 Network Walkman (20 gigs, ATRAC/SonicStage compatibilty, and a whopping 40 hrs. battery life from a removeable cell), I still enjoy the uniqueness of both MiniDisc and Hi-MD discs, as well as any other physical media out there. Nothing out today or tomorrow will ever meet (let alone beat) the versatility and portability of MiniDisc and Hi-MD. Try recording your favorite band LIVE with an iPod, you cant, can you? How about remote control access to many if not all the features on your unit without taking it out of your pocket? Not possible with an iPod, is it? How about an onboard adjustable graphic or parametric (bass/treble cntrols) equalizer? Nope, not on an iPod. The unique bragging rights of being able to show all of your iSheep for friends your massive collection of both MD and Hi-MD media, which if one of your units dies out (if you have a large collection of players like myself and some others on this forum do), you never lose your music due to it being removeable and swappable. and, oh yes, the tough one kiddies: How many of todays iPods and MP3 players on the market run on the ever-reliable and always replaceable AA batteries? I can't think of many that do if not any.
  2. Whoa, OUCH! It's a good thing I keep all of my work that I play on my NW-HD5 backed up on MD (in SP Stereo mode for car/home and other playback purposes). At least I have never erased any of my MD masters, and I also keep the master CDs/cassettes/LPs it was originally recorded off of. Most of it was made up pre-Hi-MD and some was originally uploaded to earlier versions of SS (3.1, 3.4, and my current program, which is 4.2 CP) to first my MZ-NH700 and as of almost 2 years ago to my RH1 and my HD5 after that in 64k Atrac3+. Before I got the RH1, all of my custom MD recordings were first put down on MD and recorded onto CD through both my MDS-E10 Pro MD Recorder (and earlier my old MDS-JE510 home recorder) to my HHB CDR-850 Pro CD Recorder, so after I got the RH1 the CD part of this process became unnecessary, so I just skipped that part of the process.
  3. "Sony MiniDisc. Often imitated, but never duplicated." Plus I think Apple is totally out of it tring to "perfect" the MD, the problem is, it was (and always has been) perfect right from the get-go, and has been ever since its debut back in 1992.
  4. I myself have got 2 of the EU Version RH710 Hi-MD units, and then I used the volume hack to get full volume on it as if it was a North American version. Team that up with either a Black RM-MC38EL or 55ELK and some black EX85SL IEMs and I have myself a rig for skating with. Yes, but unfortunately, the DH710 only downloads from PC to player, while the RH710 also records from either line-level analog or digital optical, and, it has a remote/phones jack as opposed to the DH710's phones-only jack. Even though the RH710 will a nard to find unit, if you like color-coordinated gear that works great, I recommend it, or perhaps the NH700 Silver with either a Silver MC38EL, MC40ELK (highly recommended) or 55ELK remote, and either the EX90SL IEMs (get them before they dsappear) or EX500SL Black (with silver trim) IEMs (they just came out).
  5. You've got PM, check your inbox. Thanks, Ray Jackson

  8. For sfbp: I also own an HHB CDR-850 pro CD recorder, and have since 2001, and also obtained a Sony Professional MDS-E10 MD deck in 2004 as well, and both do not recognize SCMS. That was the main reason why I bought them, to defeat SCMS, and then Sony found out that they were selling more pro decks (without SCMS) than home decks (SCMS-equipped), and promptly discontinued it and it's sister unit the E12. Pro decks now these days are getting harder and harder to find, even the pro CD recorders and 1-1 CD/DVD duplicators (like the ones from Microboards such as my QD-DVD copier) are getting harder and harder to find, even from MiniDisco, Guitar Center or Musician's Friend. Is this because of the RIAA/MPAA dictatorship and their draconian-ways that they practice in preventing "piracy"?
  9. Good luck Guitarfxr, I will miss you, and don't worry, theblueraja, bobt and I will hold up the fort as long as we can (or until we die or get nuked) and sustain the faith in the MD/Hi-MD Revolution. Thanks to you, I got even more hardcore into MD/Hi-MD and have learned an awful lot more about my beloved media and format than I had on my own (I have been an MD freak since December 1998). Thanks to you and eveyone else on here, I increased my stock of MD/Hi-MD units to the point where I am happy now having also secured my lifetime share of units/remotes/blank discs/cases/accessories as well. Thanks for all you have done in my almost two years on this board, you will be missed, good luck and every once in a while, let us know what's going on. Peace out, Ray Jackson MDCF user ID: BIGHMW
  10. I too have a huge arsenal of MD, Hi-MD (including three MZ-RH1 units), and NW-HD5 HDD Walkmen, and while I (now) use the HD5 for my listening enjoyment, if anything happens to it or if my stock of rechargeable batteries dies beyond maintaining a full charge, I always have my MD and Hi-MD Walkmen to fall back on, what an advantage I have, because I stocked up on what everyone out there in clueless, naive iSheepland says is "dead, obsolete technology". At least we here on the MDCF will be the ones standing tall when there will eventually be no more blanks let alone units, and after everyone else's MP3 DAP's finally bite the dust!!! ...and even when our rechargeable batteries in out ever-so-huge backstock die out on us, at least many of us who have AA battery-operated players and recorders (both MD/MDLP/NetMD and Hi-MD) will still be going strong, long after the last of the iSheep beg us for forgiveness like those who got busted by The Commish with the proverbial non-sanctioned light beer in those Miller Lite "More Taste League" commercials do. You are indeed not nuts for going with MD and Hi-MD, it is still, even 17 years after its first introduction, the most versatile portable player/recorder on the planet, obsolete or not. Period.

    Is Discman dead?

I have a vintage Discman (D-131) in my garage, as well as 2 D-NE700 ATRAC/MP3/CD Walkmen, with one being used in my AK47 CD/DVD "hustle bag" as part of my "try before you buy" setup, which includes a silver RM-MC33EL and MDR-V700DJ along with it/ I would probably buy more, provided the market on eBay holds up over time, but yes I have owned a slew of different Discmen/CD Walkmen since 1986, my frst unit being the D-7S Discman, followed by various others over all the years that I collected them but later had to sell in order to pay the bills when money ran low. Hopefully I will be able to get most of my old units back (or at least the same series of models), because the market is soon to run dry, in fact I predict that the Discman/CD Walkman market will run out before the MD/Hi-MD market does.
  12. ...and just in case you can't get an RH1, you can always get its identical twin unit, the MZ-M200, which is available at Guitar Center or Musician's Friend as part of the pro series.
  13. The 33EL does not have the Hi-MD-only capability of "A-B" setup. The remote that is most compatible with both your MZ-N510 and also the NH600D is the RM-MC38EL, which works with both NetMD and Hi-MD.
  14. Thanks dude. I already have it on my PC in .exe form, and I will also be acquiring MD Simple Burner and burn a CD of it this afternoon. Peace Out, Ray Jackson MDCF user ID: BIGHMW (for access to my BIGHMW Network of websites, see my signature)
  15. You betcha, bro! Although I myself listen to my music on my NW-HD5 HDD Walkman (ATRAC/SonicStage support was mandatory for me in my choice of DAP's), I also have an arsenal of MD/Hi-MD Walkmen, several car, home and studio decks, as well as three (count them, kids).... three MZ-RH1's (used one at a time) on hand for the purposes of recording and also for uploading of legacy MD's (in which I have hundreds of in my BIGHMW.com Media Vault, which also includes blank media of almost every type), so I set for life whenever it comes down to it. One more question: How can a acquire a CD-ROM of SonicStage 4.2 CP, just in case Sony discontinues current upgrades that are now available online (both the MDCF and ATRAC Life host upgrade links online), so that I can continue enjoying the most superior compression format ever made: ATRAC, ATRAC3, and ATRAC3Plus!!!
  16. I simply use the "S.F. Edit" menu on my MDS-E10 pro deck (set for "Track Level" to add gain) on very low signal recordings, such as from older (non-remastered, circa 1985-95) CDs, whenever I rip them to MD (at SP stereo mode) for upload to SS 4.2 CP with my RH1 and NW-HD5, knowing I only have 5 mW to use on my arsenal of MD/Hi-MD/HDD Walkmen. As for the remastered CDs (post 1995) I just leave them as they are when I am recording them direct to MD SP Stereo (same tools/modes used).
  17. hey TC and fellow MD-Heads: check this out from Weird Al Yankovic, titled "What I Bought On eBay" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYokLWfqbaU
  18. But, if you really enjoy the ATRAC series of codecs, I highly recommend either the Sony NW-HD or NW-A Series, such as the award-winning 20-gig NW-HD5. It is fully compatible with SonicStage and uses the ATRAC3/3plus codecs and also wil work with MP3 codec as well. It also sounds great, knowing Sony, with 4 preset EQ's, and 4 custom EQ's (2 6-band graphic EQ's as well as 2 bass/treble EQ's) as well as for Surround Sound (VPF Acoustic Engine) presets. You'll find one on eBay, but get ready to shell out some $$$ for it, even a good used one will go for about $100.00 USD and it also has a replaceable LiIon battery as opposed to the iTouch's embedded one, in which when it dies, you have to send the entire unit (music and all) to Apple where they will gouge you out of $$$ to replace it.
  19. 1) A home deck with Optical output, available for North America 2) A Hi-MD/MD car deck, so I don't have to rely on a Connects2 interface and my MZ-NH700 for Hi-MD use (I would still keep the Connects2 for my NW-HD5) 3) A Professional Studio Hi-MD deck (SCMS-free), so we can archive our own material in an uncompressed format, such as Linear PCM, and with optical out as well as (because it is a pro deck) no restrictions, in or out, regardless of the source.
  20. The RH710 does play legacy formatted MDs including all SP Stereo, SP Mono, LP2 Stereo, and LP4 Stereo recordings as well as Hi-MD. The only thing is is that the RH710 only records (and only with a line in, no mic jack) in Hi-MD formats, but it also uploads the NetMD formats to an MD too. However I never bought it to record nor upload/download anything, I just got it (I own 2 of them) to go with my Rollerblade inline skate gear (all black) for workouts (the RH710 is not pictured in the photo). Here is a look at the gear I wear when I skate down at Fort Worden here in Port Townsend:
  21. I have actually tried the SEARCH button on the 55ELK with my Hi-MD Walkmen and found it to not function with them, I think it was included with one of those Japan-only ATRAC/MP3 CD Walkmen that came out around 2005-06. I basically got it because of its Jet Black finish to greatly accompany my Black MZ-RH710 and matching MDR-EX85SL IEMs.
  22. Hey TBR, whassup??? Actually if you dig the stick-style remotes, the RM-MC33L/EL is mostly meant for NetMD purposes, and I saw that you have the MZ-EH1, in which case the more-Hi-MD-compatible RM-MC38EL or even the even-more rare RM-MC55ELK will also do the job. You probably saw my black MZ-RH710 pictorial in which the RM-MC55ELK Black goes great wth it (shown right here http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=20235). Use that as a model to perhaps pick up either the black 38EL (as included with the North America MZ-RH1) or the 55ELK if you want.
  23. As a proud owner of an MZ-1, (which I got for in which everything works except for the record slide awitch, I have had no problems with it, either when I use it as a DJ set for my AK47 shows, or when I use it to dub MD > MD material, but I still kinda baby it whenever it comes to using it. As for the 1969 Volkswagen analogy, I should know something about nursing something (mainly it) into gear, as I own a project vintage 1963 VW Twansporter Kombi Bus (dubbed PimpWagen), and I don't drive it like a Porsche mostly because of its age (a timeless classic!!!). Here is a look at my rolling project: My 1963 VW Bus.... It gets from 0-60 in 3 days and I'm proud of it.
  24. Great Job! I have this saved up in my favorites on my YouTube account.
