I am sure that you can still get blank Hi-MD's at MiniDisco, but, the primary single disc code number for them has changed, it is the HMD1GL (2nd generation, Blue Series), not HMD1G (first generation). Those were discontinued when the second generation Hi-MD blanks came out back in 2006.

It's delicacy (it being fragile) is why I only use my RH1/M200 as an uploader/downloader for my MD's/Hi-MD's on my PC, so I consider it a $300 external hard-drive with the convenience of removeable media.

The answer is "yes". Both the 35ELK and 38EL will work with either or (both), but for best control over al the features I highly recommend the RM-MC40ELK remote, but since you already own a 38EL it should work fine for your Hi-MD needs.

And, oh yeah, if you do get a 710 unit, make sure that it is an RH710 (European/UK-market) rather than the DH710 (US/Canada), as only the RH series includes a remote/phones jack as opposed to the phones only jack. Also the RH710 has the line/optical jack while the DH710 does not. I teamed up my two black RH710 units each with both matching MDR-EX85SL IEM's and also a Sony RM-MC55ELK LCD remote, and even if you can't get that one, you can always get the non-LCD RM-MC60 remote as well (available at http://www.minidiscaccess.com/rm106.html and it's well worth it). That also makes for a damn good fashion statement that should make DH710 owners jealous. Here are some pics of my RH710 setup: On the other hand if you do get an NH700 unit, especailly one in silver, here is a good setup to use with it, in which I teamed up both an RM-MC40ELK remote and MDR-EX90SL IEM's as well: Also, FYI, if you happen to get a European/UK-market version of either one, you're gonna need to know (and do) about the volume hack for each of these units, as they are what we call "Euro-crippled" as far as the volume and EQ are concerned, due to EU regulations regarding volume, but, as you will see, it is very easy to change the codes in the firmware to bring it up to a full 5 mW and with custom EQ as well!!! Either way, you won't be disapponited with the SQ on them, so if you're looking to do an on-field of other recording in legacy format, I recommend the NH700, if not, the RH710 should do you fine. I own both, I am also happy with both.

..or even Japan, for the superior EX700SL as offered by Sony Japan that you can get through either Audio Cubes or from Jun Ibaraki and the good folks from 'BuyFromJapan" on eBay. But, before I jump to conclusions, is that $699.00 in AUD or USD? It makes a bit of a difference with the exchange rates these days.

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/sony-ex90...-thread-193464/ I tried it and it now sounds more like my MDR-A34's, only with more isolation and better definition, but more bass!!!

Well before he became the king of Smooth Jazz, Paul Hardcastle did some great techno-electro music from 1981-1989. There are no less than 5 different English versions (mostly remixes) of his 1985 Top-40 hit about the tragedy that was the Vietnam war, "19", as well as the foreign language versions of it, but also there is "King Tut" (1985), "Rainforest" (Original version from 1985, not to be confused with the 2002 Smooth Jazz version from Hardcastle III), as well as his theme for the BBC's Top Of The Pops show called "The Wizard", that came out in 1986. They are out there for your downloading pleasure, you just have to find them. For more on his great almost 30-year career, go to http://www.PaulHardcastle19.com

I don't know, but I find tons of new, sealed blank MDs and Hi-MDs of eBay everyday, I have some listings saved up in My eBay, and of course, MiniDisco, and MiniDisc Access.

Yes, and since you are talking about computers an video game systems from the 1980's, my Atari 5200 from 1983 (serial #141101, U.S.-made 4-port) as well, I still play mine every now and then, and would never think about getting an Xbox, PlayStation of Wii system to replace it. You can find out more about vintage Atari syatems and the cult following they have at http://www.AtariAge.com and also http://www.AtariMax.com as well

I believe that MD (and in some capacities Hi-MD as well) will always have a cult folowing here in the States and abroad, while in Japan it will maintain a more mainstream status as far as an on-field recorder is concerned, I still use my legacy players and recorders to record onto blank MDs and Hi-MD exclusively as a high-capacity player and also for uploading of music and media (through my RH1 of course). In fact, here is my latest lineup of both legacy and Hi-MD players and decks (including home, pro, car and portable), so here it goes folks, so please bare with me on this one: First my legacy units: Portables: 1 MZ-1 (Black) 1 MZ-R50 (Silver) 2 MZ-R70 (Silver) 1 MZ-R70 (Grey) 4 MZ-R700 (Silver) Home: 1 MXD-D3 1 MDS-JE520 1 MDS-JE480 Pro: 1 MDS-E10 Car: 2 MDX-C5970 2 MDX-65 ...and now for the Hi-MD units: Portable: 3 MZ-NH700 (Silver) 2 MZ-RH710 (Black) 1 MZ-RH1 (Black) ...and more to come folks! Plus I also have a TON of accessories, remotes, phones/buds/IEM's, cases and other unique accessories (including 4 Connects2 ASONWHAD001 interfaces) so I am pretty much set with the MiniDisc (both legacy and Hi-MD) format for years (maybe decades) to come. I am currently stocking up on blanks, I just received 40 more new legacy blanks (Sony Premium Gold Series) for all my music, and will soon get more, as well as blank Hi-MD's (the cool blue ones, HMD1GL, the more reliable ones of course) as well for data storage, since I don't trust CD or DVD formats for my data storage, although magneto-optical media is slow in up/downloading, but it is more reliable and also you can always add onto it or subtract from it as well.

No thanks, Sony USA, I prefer the SL/SP versions instead, becuase of the convenience of the shorter cord with the optional extension. as I own a few remote-controlled units, doesn't it always seen that Sony screws the North American market with the crappy over-legngthy LP version of its Headphones/earcbuds? It seems so to me.
-
Congrats on you aquisition of an MZ-1. I also own one, that I use for DJ-ing purposes whenever I am on the road, it is a sturdy as a rock and all the controls are perfectly placed. Now if only they can build a Hi-MD version of this unit everything would be great.
-
Hey guys, You have always wondered if remote controls and headphopnes/buds/IEM's can be "custom-matched" to a particular unit. The answer is "yes". Some of my ideas include my silver NH700 withan MC40ELK remote and either my old MDR-NC6 cans or my great EX90SL IEMs, as well as my black RH710 wioth a black MC55ELK remote and EX85SL IEMs, and also my matte black RH1 with matching (and very color-coordinated at that!) MC38EL black remote and either NC60 (JE) phones or the E888SP buds as well, I will post pics later as soon as I get them tomorrow afternoon. If you have any ideas for me or of what you use with your unit, post pics up here, let's show up those Head-Fi dudes with our own MD/Hi-MD pictorials and setups!!!

Home/pro: MDS-E10 (I also own an MDS-JE480 MDLP deck) Portable: MZ-R700
-
Well SBG, to answer tha inquiry, it was included with the MZ-R700 and N707 back in 2000 and in 2001

OR, you can also try Guitarfxr, he has major access to stores like Hardoff, but as far as a NIB N910, that IS gonna be a tough one, and I know how you and some others feel about eBay, although I have only been burned about less tham 5 times in over 1.000+ purchaes and a perfect feedback rating (both buying and selling).
-
Yes, the US hack will give you an EQ as well as full volume, I did my two RH710s with the US specs hack and got both a full EQ and a full 5 mW of volume..
-
Hey dude, about the volume/EQ hack, you forgot it also works on the RH710, I hacked two of them that I own. That I did as first order of business when I got them on eBay out of Europe (both units came from the UK).
-
I don't have to worry too much about my fairly large supply of remotes (both bundled and aftermarket), as I already own two 40ELK remotes, including one I bought off of lamewing on this board just this past week. I have done some experimentation as far as matching up custom remote/phones sets is concerned, and I find the matte black 38EL/35ELK to go perfectly with either the NC60 noise-canceling cans, the EX71/81SL N.U.D.E EX IEM's or even better the E888SP N.U.D.E buds (all matte black with a tad of chrome on them, all go perfect with the black RH1/M200.) Also the gloss/matte black RH710 goes perfect with the black MC55ELK remote and EX85SL black N.U.D.E EX IEM's... and finally... the NH700 Silver goes great with either the 39LT AM/FM/TV/WB radio tuner remote (perfect for going to ball games at Safeco Field and listening to the play-by-play from Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus, GO MARINERS!!!) or the 40ELK remote with either the NC6 noise-canceling cans (I miss my old pair with the custom homemade "JE Version"-style cord I had on them) or the EX90SL N.U.D.E EX IEM's

Cool, I'll get my second RH1 from MDC then (it's nice to have a backup in case your first one dies out on you), after I am through with my other business with my music, such as putting out more merchandise for my planned comeback.
-
Fast shipment, would be glad to do business with again. AAAAA+ Thanks for the MC40ELK remote, Ray Jackson MDCF user ID: BIGHMW

Yes but does it have the "CE" mark (Euro versions have it), or does it have both the FCC's and the Canadian ICES markings on it? If so I will get one from MDC, otherwise I will get an M200 from MiniDisco instead.

I am thinking about recording some of my vintage cassette collection to MiniDisc from my TC-WR465 cassette to my MDS-E10 Pro MD Deck, as some of my tapes are extremely rare, especially in the case of my 1985 Paul Hardcastle self-titled (the one with the smash hit "19" and the orginal version of "Rainforest" on it) tape I got back then, and I wondered how good does a tape-to-MD recording sound, and whether or not I shoild use the Dolby B or C NR on it, to cut down the hiss from the tapes (some are as old as having been bought back in 1981). My mangement, Len Enders of Label Cove Entertainment http://www.MySpace.com/dedenderz preserved his entire tape collection to MDs and then sold the tapes themselves, besides I heard that it would cut down the cost of having to buy the CDs of my tape collection, mainly by simply using a few "tweeks" that my pro decks can do rather than have to do a digital CD-to-MD transfer of all of them. What do you think?
