Error converting data... any other software available?
Christopher replied to christinecrook's topic in Minidisc
It usually doesn't require such. This tells me that things are corrupted, and you should follow the reinstall directions in the NetMD faq, found within this forum. -
http://etronics.resultspage.com/display.ph....x=0&image1.y=0 [i'm not sure if they ship overseas - you may end up having to go with Minidisco, which is probably the most ideal situation as their customer support and shopping experience is 1000x better than the aforementioned places]

No, you'll need to use the Sonicstage backup utility to facilitate such a transfer, otherwise you'll lose everything. When you export songs in such a manner, you're also exporting the rights management with it. If you don't use the backup utility, then once you transfer the music to a new computer [and a different install of Sonicstage], Sony thinks your a pirate.

Yes, a toslink to miniplug connector. Put that exact term in froogle.com and you'll find hundreds of results.

Indeed. Moving this post to Live Recording..

No, I've never seen anyone do that successfully. Sorry, perhaps someone else will have a clue.

I really enjoyed giving feedback to Sony. I think I'm going to start requesting interviews for Sony representatives and other MD making ones as well. If done respectfully, why not? Maybe we have the power to influence things to a better status and functionality.

New User new to format, need help deciding on hardware!
Christopher replied to justin_barbier's topic in Minidisc
It all really ties back into what features you would really employ, what battery life would appeal to you the most, what asthetics would appeal to you as well, etc. Check out that equipment browser. -
does minidisc media degrade after multiple deletions?
Christopher replied to cjp's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Welcome to the forums. Absolutely not. You can re-record on a Minidisc up to a million times. I imagine by the 990,000 time that degredation may come into play, but god help you if you're not deceased by then [or the unit is]. -
I love this section of the community moreso than any other, because it's pretty much common knowledge that the true backbone of the format is live recording. It's always been that way. Nonetheless, with Google indexing the forum properly now, there will be more activity here. It's already been apparent in the last few days, but now there will be even more as I've requested that the webmaster make a formal invitation as a news topic to invite live recording enthusiasts to share tips, tricks and give constructive feedback to enhance this section of the forums. With leaders such as marcnet, Dex Otaku, A440, mrsoul, Reactive and more, I cannot thank you all enough for making this section the upcoming place to be for such discussion. I will be private messaging some of you as time progresses to collaborate on topics and discussions that I can sticky or at least dissect to make stickies out of. Let's get this initative rolling by posting the most general questions with answers that should be stickied and then I'll put those in some sort of mini-FAQ. Hopefully we can get this done asap, because if we spend just a little time compiling the most basic information..you guys won't have to repeat yourselves and we can move forward to better things.

I am unstickying this thread because it's just too long for someone to casually read for information. This is still an extremely helpful topic, however.

Hi-MD users, please read this thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=6330 p.s. You cannot upload recordings from a NetMD or non Hi-MD device with a Hi-MD recorder unless you own a MZ-RH1. NetMD + Older MD unit users, please read this: You cannot upload through USB. Well, all hope isn't lost. If you want to upload live recordings made on your Minidisc unit, there are ways you can upload, albeit realtime, that can produce satisfying results. The analogue upload method: * Note that this is also the only way to transfer audio from an MD / MDLP disc to your computer from any MD / MDLP / netMD portable. * Connect your HiMD to your computer using a 3.5mm stereo male-to-male cable going from your headphone output to the sound card's line input [NOT the mic input] * Turn off all processing on the MD unit, including AVLS, EQ, and virtual surround if your unit supports it * Set the volume control to 25/30 [note that european/UK models will put out a much weaker signal, and turning the volume up high will only cause the unit to limit or compress the signal] * Set the record levels on your computer so that the loudest passages in your recording do not exceed the record meter's [in whichever application you're using - Audacity is a good choice] maximum level. It's a good idea to leave at least 6dB of room above the loudest parts you can easily find, just in case. You can normalise the recording in your editor later if need be, but you can't undo distortion from improperly set levels. * Start recording in whichever editor your prefer on the computer, and press play on the unit * Stop recording when it's done Another way to upload is to purchase a sound card with a DIGITAL input and a Minidisc deck or bookshelf with digital out. You can then upload digitally, albeit realtime with a toslink to miniplug digital cable, using the same methods described above. Unfortunately, there is NO inexpensive way to upload faster than realtime for non - Hi-MD units.

I won't lie to you, I was the one who influenced this line. It was after a lengthy conversation with a high-level Sony rep here in the states. She had mentioned sending our conversation to JP and sure enough, my words of a NH900 and remote were born. I really stressed that the remote could be an attractive selling point for very functional recorders, boosting the ability to enjoy the product for it's nearly unparalelled use - live recording. I assume the NH700 was their own initative. The unit is my destiny. p.s. http://minidisct.com/forum/showthread.php?...0612#post230612 - all the way back in March [i'm moltar there, of course].

haha, thanks mrsoul. That's what you get for looking at 10 topics at once. :rasp: Nonetheless, there are a TON of aftermarket FM transmitters out there, and it's not an iPod only thing. Just run some google searches and you'll see.

New User new to format, need help deciding on hardware!
Christopher replied to justin_barbier's topic in Minidisc
Well, I can relate to this in a way. The most ideal Hi-MD unit in my opinion is the NH900. The NH1 is nice, but the overall functionality of the NH900 [on paper and from experiences I've read] seems superior. One of the neatest things about having a MD unit that can record is for those spontanious times with friends, family, or perhaps some other social event that you would hold dear - on top of the journalistic and music recording ambitions! That aspect of MD really swept me away back when I had a MZ-R700 a few years ago. Are you ever going to record in a live scenario or perhaps digitally from a stereo/etc? If not, then yes, a NH600D perhaps with an aftermarket remote such as the RM-MC40ELK would be a great starter Hi-MD unit. I keep thinking back to your inital statement, "(being a musician as well as a journalism student.)" [i.e. if you would record]; if you could score a NHF800 for $199, would you bite? What about a NH900 for $239? These are real prices that most people aren't keen on and associate these models with much higher values. Anyway, look at the comparison tables in the minidisc.org equipment browser and perhaps really judge what features mean the most to you. -
ignore this post, I misread.

Try uninstalling everything via the control panel, install Sonicstage 1.5, and then install the Sonicstage 2.# updater on top of that.

Different battery, different disc, and let the unit rest for a day. Is this unit under warranty?

Last minute assistance to MZ-N707 MD newbie.vers.2.0? 8-)
Christopher replied to tomluvsgiants's topic in Live Recording
As most know, I'm not too terribly keen on Live Recording*, but I can tell you that AVLS only applies to playback and not recording volume. AVLS was created as a "standard" that people should adhere to so they don't go deaf from listening to music at high volumes. * - I will be after I get my NH900 World Tourist edition, however. -
Hrm, on top of KJ's recommendations, I would also suggest reading up on our 'phones forum: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewforum.php?f=64 [the stickied topic within is a good start]

Well, how did your simulations go?

Are you a resident of the USA? If so, upgrade to Sonicstage 2.2 first.
