just get a 1/8" male>male stereo patch cable, and next time you guys are out and about somewhere, grab his mp3 player and record a few songs off of it onto MD. then try to get him to record some songs from your MD to his mp3 player. better yet, record him talking trash about MD and saying how great other things are, then chop up the recordings in audacity and make them say the opposite. make a CD of it and it would be a great present for the holidays.,

weren't shadowfax part of the windham hill crowd? i think i've picked up every windham hill release from my local goodwill for 25 cents a pop// vinyl to boot!
-
I think another factor for that is the price. Cassette walkwans are FAR cheaper than MiniDisc walkmans, they were also much more common for people to have.

yeah, the ipod generation sadly may never know the beauty of the mixtape.

yeah, we can stop anytime... /me attempts to hide signature...

they're missing a few letters... should be: error EEEK!! at least thats what I would be saying./ what happened anyway?

I have a CD/MD deck that does SP or LP modes from CD>MD/// even has a hi-speed transfer mode.

How can I recover data from a mini disc that won't play?

Are you able to play the disc with just the player? Do you only get the error when hooked up to PC? -

Yep, it works just fine uploading optical PCM to SonicStage. I'm going to try the Mac upload again to see if it works... What version of the Mac music transfer are you using? Be sure to grab the most recent from the downloads section if things aren't working.

apparently not, but they take just as long as doing them in realtime.

There is no actual SP codec for PC, that is true. As far as transcoding from SP to Hi-SP then to PCM (when upload as PCM is selected), there was some debate on taperssection regarding this, and my frequency analysis can be found here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&am...st&p=125745 which shows a definite difference between SP uploaded as PCM vs SP uploaded as Hi-SP. Based on that, I can say with at least some certainty that SP uploaded as PCM is not transcoded to Hi-SP first. Thus, it should be retaining it's original quality when transferred as PCM. EDIT: What I suspect is that the option to "automatically convert uploaded files to WAV" is checked (which is a different option), and the default option for SP uploads isn't changed to PCM (default is Atrac3+ 256kbps). When you upload SP as PCM, you will end up with a PCM file in SonicStage (instead of a 256kbps Atrac3+ file, which you wou7ld get if the SP upload setting has not been changed from it's default). Do a simple test, don't change any of your current options and upload an SP file. Right-click on the file after it is in the Library and check the properties. This will show either PCM or Atrac3+ 256kbps. If it is the latter, you need to change your importing options under transfer settings NetMD/advanced/import options to PCM.. See image below: ??? I could've sworn I've uploaded optical PCM recordings (to PC and Mac)... hmm.. it's been awhile though so I could be wrong about the Mac aspect, but I'm almost positive you can do it via SonicStage (any recent version) just fine..

I think it's equivalent to about $81 these days.

Trackmarking might be the only option if you plan on swapping discs. Trackmarks can always be removed afterwards... However: If you are using Hi-MD, the only way you will be able to trackmark transferred audio is if you transfer it in NetMD mode using SimpleBurner... Anything transferred in Hi-MD mode, or anything transferred via SonicStage (in any mode) cannot be trackmarked. To transfer using Simple Burner you will need to burn to a CD or CD image (CD-RW works and is of course reusable). Nero will let you overburn a CD image up to 150 or 160 minutes I believe. Though you can always split it up.

I pre-ordered the Discbox, which comes with the download anyway... so why not? It will last me until December when the Discboxes come out. I will say though that the 160kbps Mp3s that were the download are definitely lower than my standard for lossy compression. The album is very good, not that I expected anything less from them. I like the example they are setting with the release of this album. For those of you living on the moon, Radiohead is no longer affiliated with a record label, and have released this record on their own. The download version is available on their website, and you get to choose what you want to pay for it. Be it $5, $10, $3.21 or even $0.. They also have the "Discbox" which contains the album on CD (with extra tracks), the album on 2 x 12" heavyweight vinyls, and an art/lyrics book... Also comes with the downloadable version. They are asking 40 pounds for the Discbox.

Original SP is 292kbps. It's not lossless, but you can upload it as WAV (not losing original quality) using the RH1. There is also the option to upload it as Atrac3+ 256kbps, but that is transcoding, which may or may not introduce a potentially negligible amount of quality loss. Either way, do whatever sounds best to you and fits your needs.

fixed: good stuff there

Sorry for all the confusing terminology... While anything uploaded with SonicStage does by default have DRM, it can be removed without having to convert to WAV or reencode: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16088 If you follow this method, you will be left with your original uploaded recordings, DRM-free. These Atrac files can then be archived and/or used on multiple computers with no problems. I've done this for 2 years so far and have not had any problems using these files on multiple computers and after multiple reinstalls of Windows. Keep in mind though that the tracks that are uploaded are Atrac, thus they will only be playable if you have SonicStage installed, or using the Winamp Atrac3 plugin. There is a setting in SonicStage to automatically convert your imported files to WAV, which has no DRM at all, but requires more space (hence my FLAC reference).

The MZ-M100 is the mac version of the RH10 and won't upload legacy discs,, The RH1/M200 is the only recorder that will upload legacy discs. And only to PC at this time. Any tracks you import in whatever legacy format (SP/MONO/LP2/LP4), as well as Hi-MD formats, can be converted to WAV after uploading thus releasing them from any DRM. You can then archive the recordings on audio CD or convert to a lossless format such as FLAC and archive them.

Awesome! I might end up trying that one ! EDIT: Love it! Took me awhile to figure out where to drag and drop files/folders, turns out I had to drag them up near the top in order for SonicStage to pull it into the library. Great stuff!

I've always had problems with those little bugs in the Winamp codec. Haven't used it myself in forever though. Upgrading might help. I'm sure most of the code is similar to v2, but there might be bug fixes in the way that winamp handles codecs that might resolve (or at least help) the issue.

Thought I'd write up a little bit on some of the SonicStage tweaks that I've gathered and used over time. Some of the tweaks are based on preference, so feel free to pick and choose whichever ones you'd like to use. Thanks to all of the forum members who have posted some of these tweaks over the past few years. These tweaks should work with all current SonicStage versions. 3.4 > 4.3 Tweak #1 - Disabling SSAAD.exe from startup: Many users have noticed that when SonicStage is installed it registers the mysterious SSAAD.exe to run on startup. I have disabled this on every install of SonicStage, and have had no issues. There seems to be little to no information regarding what this is or why it runs on startup. Removing this from startup either by using msconfig, or even deleting the registry keys for it results in it being re-registered to startup when SonicStage is launched. To remove this from startup, simply navigate to C:\Program Files\Sony\SonicStage, and rename SSAAD.exe. I rename the file to SSAAD.exe_bak. Then, it can be removed from startup under msconfig, and will not re-register itself when SonicStage is launched. Tweak #2 - Removing/Replacing the sound played back when files are finished transferring: This is user preference, but I have always found the sound annoying. I can see how it could be useful, but when you are transferring files while watching a movie or something like that, it can get on your nerves. To remove this sound, navigate to C:\Program Files\Sony\SonicStage\Data\Image\se and rename complete.wav. As in the previous tweak, I rename this to complete.wav_bak. You can also use any sound you'd like, as long as it is in WAV format and titled complete.wav, simply place your file in the folder. Tweak #3 - Removing/Replacing CONNECT Store under Music Source: Again, user preference. I never use the CONNECT Store, so I've changed the entry to go here to the forums. It can also be removed entirely. This tweak involved modifying the registry. I strongly recommend making a backup of your registry before you continue. To remove CONNECT Store, open regedit (Start>Run>regedit) and delete the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Corporation\SonicStage\EMD\HomeURL. MDCF.txt

Just keep in mind that you can't have both Hi-MD and Legacy MD recordings on the same disc. You can use SonicStage to transfer files to a Hi-MD formatted disc in some of the older Atrac3 codecs (LP2 quality, for eaxample: 132kbps), but these will not be playable in older MDLP units if the disc is formatted as Hi-MD. Another example: If you format an 80min MD as Hi-MD and record some tracks via Line-in... You can only record further Hi-MD tracks to the disc. Switching from Hi-MD to standard MD disc modes (or vice versa) formats/erases all audio data.

one possibility here is that the ribbon cable that connects to the recording/overwrite heads is going bad. In this case, when the ribbon cable extends to a specific point, there is a loss of power or signal to the heads which could cause problems such as this. There is a thread around here somewhere detailing how to repiar the ribbon cable with a little soldering skill.
