HIMDRenderer not "tagging" naming WAVs or MP3 file names
raintheory replied to Sparky191's topic in Hi-MD Renderer Forum
What version of nero are you using? There is a plugin (nxmyfla.dll IIRC) that can be used to have Nero 6 burn FLAC to CD. - Great idea marc about the user-specified naming scheme, I'm all for that. -
Welcome to the forums! For any line-in recordings, there is no way to turn off the auto trackmarks. You can use the "combine" function in SonicStage to join the files after they have been uploaded.

What happens when you listen to the recording on the unit itself? What version of SonicStage are you using?

Awesome! Been waiting to try this out. It's a shame that there's currently no linux support for my audio interface though (E-MU 1616m). Here is a working mirror for those interested: http://mirror.imbrandon.com/ubuntustudio/7.04/

I had issues with NetMD mode using 4.3... Switching back to 4.2 fixed the problems, if yr using 4.3 I'd advise downgrading to 4.2

Ubuntu should pick it up as a removable drive, and you should be able to use it as such... What version of Ubuntu are you running? I've had some issues with Festy (7.04) and mounting volumes... Haven't tried my Hi-MD units on that version yet though.

Currently there is no way to retrieve the "license" for your own recordings. Why SONY decided that your live recordings should be wrapped in DRM is beyond any of us... It may be worth holding onto the files in case a method arises in the future. From here on out, follow this method to remove DRM from your new recordings so you don't run into this situation in the future: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16088

Can I record from the PC to Minidisc and then play back on a normal MD player
raintheory replied to a topic in Minidisc
It should work with any player, yes. It definitely transfers faster than realtime.. but of all of the possibilities via SonicStage, it is the slowest. -

There is an option in SonicStage to transfer in "SP Compatibility" mode. This will play in any unit, but there is some debate over whether the quality is closer to LP2 (~132kbps) rather than true SP (~292kbps). -
I used the N707 to record most of the material on my own albums as well. But I have to agree with bobt... The recording mechanism in the N707 will eventually break down, and in the process there is a high likelihood that it will take a few of your recordings with it in the dreaded "BLANK DISC" TOC error. Go for an affordable Hi-MD recorder (with Mic-in of course, as they do not all have this), you won't be disappointed.

heh, i just got a moleskine too... a small one with graph paper.

Hi-MD discs use a different technology (Domain Wall displacement Detection) which allows for the 1GB size. http://www.minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html

I mainly just wanted something to be able to get my old 4 track cassette tapes out to my PC. The unit only cost me $39.99 so I can't complain. As I stated, I merely wanted a cassette 4 track with dedicated tape outputs to get my tapes archived. Probably won't use it often for multitrack recording, as most of my setup is now computer based.

Sounds awesome! Can't wait for some photos of the installation.

Fostex Multitracker XR5 Now I'll be able to get all of my old 4-track cassette tapes archived!!

For reference: The only recordings that cannot be transferred to PC with the MZ-RH1 are recordings that were made using a previous install of SonicStage and/or OpenMG software in NetMD mode. You can transfer recordings made using SimpleBurner in NetMD mode, as well as any recordings you made using Mic-In or Line/Optical in. And of course any Hi-MD recordings. However, if you have a unit/deck that is capable of TOC-Cloning you can clone a TOC of a disc recorded via line/mic onto a NetMD/SonicStage recorded disc and it will then upload fine. As stated previously, SP/MONO tracks are converted to either PCM or Hi-SP during transfer, LP2/LP4 recordings transfer as-is. There are plenty of threads here regarding the MZ-RH1/M200 and it's usefullness in transferring legacy MiniDiscs, as well as it's (relatively few) restrictions as I have noted. Hope this helps clear things up. EDIT: One possibility to consider, ...there are numerous members here that own the RH1. If your only need is to get your discs transferred digitally to PC, perhaps you can work something out to mail the discs to someone along with a few blank DVD-R discs and have them upload the discs for you? I've done this for a few members (along with recovering TOC's) in exchange for a few blank MiniDiscs, so maybe work out a trade or price and see if someone can help you out... Just an idea... Also, any recordings you make from here on out with the M100 will be uploadable by you with no problems, plus you can record in PCM with it, so it may be worth hanging onto.

320kbps mp3s work fine on any mp3 compatible Hi-MD recorder. They sound especially great on the RH1 though (vs the 2nd gen recorders), for various reasons. To be safe, be sure they are 44.1kHz just about any bitrate mp3 should work. CBR or VBR.

You've got a PM.

I was under the impression that traditional EVP recordings required magnetic tape recorders... That the phenomenon was caused by fluctuations in the electromagnetic field (of possible paranormal origin), hence magnetic tape recorder... MiniDisc may work regardless, as it uses magneto technology. Would be interesting to hear your results.

Beginner's Question: Is Minidisc better than a digital voice recorder?
raintheory replied to djab44's topic in Minidisc
One possible issue might be ease of Recorder>PC integration. For these older MiniDisc units, you need to record to your PC via analog line in realtime, whereas some digital recorders these days might allow drag & drop which would be faster. -
Unfortunately there is no way to disable the auto-trackmark feature when recording via line/optical input. Use the method described above to combine the tracks on the unit or use the combine feature under SonicStage's edit menu after uploading, just make sure the tracks are in order first.

Thanks, I've seen a few Fostex units periodically on eBay, but it's always been when I didn't immediately have the cash to pay for one. Will keep an eye out though. I'm in the states BTW.
