Recording. Even if the person thinks he does not need, soon he may find it interesting as there a lot of good sources to record from and that expands the boundaries of music available to you.

IMO there is no reason why it should not work with any HiMD equipment (except the player offcourse).

How can you have a HiMD drive which can be read by non-HiMD equipment. Anyway, this reminds me of some Sony laptops which came with NetMD drives.

IMO it is yet another anti-piracy drive from Sony. But, with a bookshelf you can copy from digital out into your soundcard's digital in, correct?

How good is recording to hard drive? I hear the NJB3 is the next best thing after minidisc for recording, but are there any issues/annoyances when dealing with HDD players for recording into WAV?

Hey, When recording from the same exact source (and into the same codec, be it lp2, 256atrac3+ or PCM), how big is the difference going to be between using analogue out and optical out? I am deciding whether to spend some money to get me a new digital TV box which offers digital out instead of my current analogue version. The Digital TV offer some nice 192kb radio stations, and I can leave the recorder overnight to record a few good hours of music. Upload into SS does not matter to me, I looking to get the best quality possible. I even use my XBox (which does have optical out) to copy audio cd's to MD lol. Thinking of copying mp3's to a cd, playing it back on the XBox and then recording them digitally. Figure this way is better than Net/HiMD and much slower. Regards

There is hope. AFAIK you can now create movies for the psp (or clies, they use the same codecs) in MacOS. Offcourse MP4 files are not as propietary as OM*, but here is hoping that it will happen someday.

They are all equal. IMO LP2 is the better option there. The final choice is record from optical line out to optocal line-in in and that will give you the best quality.

The optical-in IMO is better as the compression hardware on the Hi-MD seems to be better than the software on the SonicStage. But the difference is minute.

The lack of quality is the main reason I have started buying cd's again.

I agree, that there is no way the Minidisc can win at the play-only game, the recording it is its most important feature.

The mp3 transfer on the Sony NW-E99 is not that fast, since it still does wrapping DRM and it limited to USB1.1 .

Many macs have digital in which makes great quality copies possible.
