It doesn't convert, it just transfers 105 Atrac3 in 132 wrapping.

105 is transferred to NetMD with 132 wrappinng, making the unit think it is playing lp2.

USB-to-optical out will work on all MDLP recorders, but it will be real-time (slow). Alternatively you can get a NetMD unit to do that (and IMO 910 looks better than N10). But my recommendation would be european NH600 (which has an optical-in as well), as a cheap HiMD option to playing and recording. Ebay has a lot of these.

Stacking codecs is never good, so recording in pcm and then compressing on the pc is the best way forward for sq.

I don't think NetMD/MDLP can go any lower in price. On Ebay there are scratchless units going to hardly nothing, these are some quality units as well.

Yes, I believe the stream is downmixed to PCM and then recorded as usual to minidisc.
