  1. Are you on XP? 2K , or NT system , SS is up to 4.3 , but 4.2 is quite stable and can be found here at the MD forums. If you can get a Macbook you wount have a prob at all , the "MD Transfer " for Mac is much simpler and absolutely stable.havent lost a recording yet. on the Mac your RH1 just comes up as a Hard drive , then MD transfer converts everything to WAV as it is imported. With SS , you have soo many optionsand it might be onfusing at first , you do have to set up your preferences to get the best out of it.
  2. Is it in the Menu's on the N10? My Bad, all the other discs pre HI MD basically hold it the rec button ,Thx 440. The contsruction site Idea is based on the Low freqs and percussive elements of Heavy Machines and Jackhammers , its about the same volume as a concert when your close up ( 10 -30 feet)
  3. PCM ..IS WAV , AUDACITY will be the editor (Free) Install the LAME encoder with it , you can canvert to mp3 or Download "Switch" from NCH audio (Also Free)
  4. Intro to Engineering Recording is an art , and often misunderstood and misrepresented. Many people who have "Gadjet Experience" think that they know recording. But that isnt so . Good info is good info . This isnt my work, and there are some gramatical errors , but it IS well worded and presented from an Engineering Standpoint , The Basics are in this guide. The rest comes from experience and the working enviornment . I hope this helps you guys to see what it means to "Get That Sound" Home Studio Recording
  5. My MZ-R50 , is still going strong , what , thats is like Ten years or so ...... I think? My MZ-R70 was 6 years old and still working when I sold it to someone who need a MD right away, Um Daily listening , I have a MZ-E25 , and an E50 that stay in the backpack those are 10? 12 years back????? someone correct me ,
  6. On both the 50 and the 55 , its the same , what you can do is "Pause" at some point ( Like a break in the dialog ) with it in Pause mode , rew a few or all track marks and hit Track Mark at each marker to turn off the marks , IE: You have recorded 15 minutes and someone needs a five minute break , You hit the Pause button ( Not stop) Use the Rew button a few times , and track mark button to remove the marks working your way back to where you Paused ( the last track mark ) DONT erase that mark , then The stage begins again just hit the Pause button and your recording . To get into Manual record level mode Pause and Hold the Record button over for two seconds , then you can set Manual levels, using the FFw and REW buttons If you wanna part with the 55 , I miss mine , It got a wrong power supply one day and didnt like it (see Below)
  7. I do that a lot , record to the MD play it thru a small mixer and add lead lines or scale examples , Audacity is a Good Idea catcher , and if you work with you can get pretty decent quality with it.
  8. On most models , press Pause and hold the record button in for a couple of seconds to get to Manual record mode. Then while it is Paused use the FFw/Rwnd arrow buttons to adjust the levels , watch the meters as you do this , when the levels look good hit the pause button again to start recording. ( It means that yes you miss a song , or set it during sound check ) Also the optical input on your computer might not be set at the same sample rate as the Optical Output of the deck , that can also cause a problem. You dont want TOO much limitation on the Mics , you kill the dyanamic range and the sound quality when you do . They have to breath a little . So practice with different situation and settings on the mic and recorder before trying a Loud concert . You dont run a marathon after just learning to walk, unless your a bionic kid or something. It takes a little practice to get decent sound. Go record Construction sites , or Whatever to get used to setting good levels , then go record a concert .
  9. Dont buy the 8 track Ray , Ive been reading about it , No EQ ing on the Input , on after burn only if ya know what I mean , when I found that out I was glad I got the 2488 ...ummmmm even more than I was? post EQ only sux , cant record the eq , why'd ya put it in there?
  10. If you ever visit I will show you around , I can speak well enough to get into trouble, and I know where tha Gadjets are !!!!!!!
  11. I dont half to listen to the mp3 to know that you had every limit possible going , that is what killed the Bass, setting levels is somewhat of an art , it isnt All or Nothing, you have to pay very carefull attention to your meters and watch your levels to see where they are . You put the mic thru the Line input , completely defeting the need or the purpose of the Mic sensitivty, that ONLY works on the Mic input. Try going to the mic input since you have a -20db pad on the mic. set the sense low , and then bring up the meteres little by little till you are -4 db under at the peaks , Sincet that mic Has a 20 pad it acts as a Limiter itself ( Quite a good one if you use it right) You can put that mic right in front of a Guitar amp and not get hassled. Line level in is for mics that dont have those controls or are harder to get good levl control out of . from sound man "Can I also use different microphones with the A3 adapter via my recorder's LINE-IN jack? Unfortunately not, since, to our knowledge, the OKM microphone, together with the A3 adapter, is the only "Elektret" microphone that works via the Line-in jack. The adapter is coordinated with the OKM microphone, and will only work was a preamplifier together with it. For what purposes was the OKM Pop/AV built, and how does it differ from the Classic version? All Pop/AV OKM microphones are 3 dB less sensitive than the Classic version, allowing them to be used for higher volumes, where otherwise only the "Rock" version would provide undistorted recordings." Note it is 3db LESS sensitive than the other mics , You have to be more carefull with the levels
  12. Actually I did a recording of a Shakuhachi Master , who visited my home , and I set up two mics one ran behind my Computer to one side of the room and the other didnt cross anything to my side of the room , these were moderate cables , the left channel of the recording was completely ususable the noise was ferocious. Make sure that the cable isnt anywhere near power supplies , computer, TV , etc , The cable going to a MD mic input becomes a Live Wire , there is a voltage going thru it , that by default introduces inductance. 440 might wanna argue with me on this but I know electronics , doing guitar amp repair , etc , Some cables if you touch or move them you will hear it I have a Cheap 20 dollar stereo mic that the whole length of extention cable acts like a pickup , I can set it on the sound board of my guitar and it will transmit the vibrations quite well , that is with a sponge and sock over the mic. Take the same cable put it on a different mic , ...nothing , not a sound, so check both the mic and the cable , You might want a nicer mic.
  13. I own a Macbook , have Parrallels and XP , but I keep the MD on the Mac side , the simplicity of just getting clean audio into the computer and it being a standard wave file to work with in ANY editor is cool by me. Anything the comes in (Transfered to the comp) is automatically a wave file No worry's bout bit rates conversions or whatever , plus the SS is a little Proccessor intensive , but on the Imac it might not matter , thats a fast bird . As that it is recognized as a Harddrive on the Mac , you can drag and drop files onto it , they will just be ignored by the RH1 and take up disk space, These ARE Magneto Optical Drives ( the discs) think small MO drives , Archive away just make sure you have and extra RH1 or regognizable to read the disks on the comp . No Scratches, No Magnetic depletion (erasure) RFI resilient, SMALL , Permanent retention of contents . Anyone who badmouths MD as an archive format needs help , professional psychological help. It is just the concern of making sure you have a machine to read what has been written , at the point when you need it . I have seen somewhere on the net where someone was trying to build a drive bayMD unit , will have to look for that again . found one but its MD Data http://www.call-telcor.com/index.php?targe...;product_id=154
  14. I have to post here just so that I have all the " New Posts " at one time 3.6 gigs would be just toooooo coooool
  15. I bought a MZ-E50 for 500¥ today because I felt sorry for it , It wasnt DEAD YET , how could someone abandon such a thing ? It is playing Keiko Matsui's "White Owl" at this very moment not a problem not a scratch on the unit. http://www.hardoff.co.jp/ I luv dis place
  16. I joined actually to help someone who was asking about a Sony Microphone , The ECM-23F3 , A violin player I believe , I was searching for a second one for a set ( I own one of these mics , and if anyone has one talk to me , I would love to hav a matched set ) I was away for a year , and found that I was still considered on the board , I bought the RH1 and got involved . Thxz for putting up with me . That is a job I know
  17. The HIsp on the Onkyo is Atrac , PCM is WAV, all MD's are Atrac, Whatever brand you choose . The Sony Mic inputs are quieter and have better dynamic range . The Line output is going to Almost impossible to distinguish unless you have a very high end Spectrum Analizer and 4,000 dollar set of Eartworks mics to measure with.
  18. Actually I think I am using the cable that came with my Microtrack ????????????? go figure
  19. Glad I could help . MD is to cool of a thing to have a Bad intro to . I always prefer to pay cash for anything , If I cant hold it I dont buy it . But in todays world , everything is "Online" As Dylan said " The times they are a Changin" hope you get it soon , Make sure to get the 40elk remote for it as well , I have only had mine for two weeks (the remote) and it is permanently attached like an umbilical cord. ( will it be an Inny or an Outy ?when it falls off??????) the Side jog on the RH1 can be finniky but the remo makes a world of difference
  20. I am lisstening to my Heart skipping every other beat , and Synchopated Arythmic articulations as I sit here and stare at my new Tascam 2488 sitting in my studio floor , afraid to open the Package , in utter disbelief that it is here.
  21. Here is the response I got Darrin <DarrinE@minidisc-canada.com> to me More options 11:18 am (0 minutes ago) We appreciate the info on this. All clients should have been notified, some of which we are waiting to hear back from. > Friday 30 March 2007 2:53:23 AM > > TC > > > Go check this post > http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&am...st&p=119131 > > This isnt the only one , your pissing people off by not communicating >
  22. The real question is, what do you want the machine to do . If you want Portabilty you need a headphone out , If you want computer interface You want USB, and connectivity. If you want recording Options like Manual Recording level ( Very advisable) then you look for a MD that fits that profile . First You have to KNOW what you want / need from the Machine . Dont expect others to be able to define what you personally want/need ,when you answer those questions, you will know what machine to get , If you need help with Operating and learning How to use it , then this is the forum.
