I just ordered three more online. That 4gb should do me for a long time. Just bought five more 80min ones for HiMD recorder today. I'm set. I also use a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra 40gb player (fabulous sound). I like the MD because you can take it anywhere, especially on long trips without a charger, as they just use one AA battery.

I haven't, for multiple reasons:

* They aren't available where I live yet

* I do not have any means by which to order online

* Until very recently, HiMD 1GB discs cost more per MB than MD80s, so there was little point

* I do not use any MD media for permanent storage, so as long as the one that came with my player stays working, I'll just reuse it

* I haven't the money in any case

I had ordered 4 from minidisco, used 2 of them. During the past 10 years I've accumulated more than 500 MD's, some of them still in their original packages. So I have tons of 74/80 MD's waiting to be formatted to Hi-MD. Maybe it is time to go for the sparklings and Luminas waiting in their jackets.... still I dont know, maybe it's better to keep them untouched as a part of my collection

how was the price difference?

here in hk is :

$80(or around) for 10 80min

$40 for 5

Hi-MD--->$50

(all in hk dollar)

Tony, perhaps your paying too much for your discs...

I'm in HK too and I pay approx HK$60/US$7.70 for my 10s, HK$30/US$3.85 for 5s (mostly TDK Fine but many other similar quality discs too). I usually buy in Mong Kok.

The lowest I can find 1GB discs is HK$48/US$6.15, I guess since they are still very new. Let me know if you want the address...

well.....

the price for 5 80mins is just estimation biggrin.gif

and, why expensive for the 10 80mins is because I only use Sony Neige 80 now

I can only find that in one store in Mong Kok

Yes, I have five but Nismo actually has one at the moment..

To be honest, maybe I'll get five more until the next higher density arrives and we're adhering to PCM only. tongue.gif

baby, someone like you should be........

"more likely to adopt to Hi-SP", right? rolleyes.gif

Here in Tokyo, after discount, at a large retailer west of Shinjuku station, 1GB discs are avalaible at 625 yen, i.e. US$5.95, for a 105 yen/USD fx. I didn't check yet around Akihabara.

For the guys commenting about prices I might have the lowest price yet. So much so I was shocked when I saw them for this price (and yes I'm thinking about going back tommorrow to get a couple more). For the Aussies in the forum check JB Hi-Fi, they have 1Gb discs (Sony ones, Blue cover) for $4.75 each. I grabbed what 3 discs at Marion going to check the one in the city (Adelaide) tommorrow night.

BTW thats Aussie $ in the price there, probably about $4 US but havent checked on the exchange rate

personally i cannot justify spending money on 1GB discs just to use PCM. I mean sure the quality is astounding but come on! Here in Canada they cost about $9-12 each disc where a CD costs hmmm maybe 67cents. Plus you store litterally 6-8x more music stepping down just to Atrac3+ HiSP

Honestly I can't listen anymore to ATRAC since I "tasted" PCM with HIMD...

well it depends how picky your ears are too hehe

  • 2 weeks later...

Bought 5 because it seemed like a good idea. Then worked out that at current UK prices, 80 min discs are far cheaper per min of music / per Mb.

But have just realised with delight that (using Hi-SP, which sounds perfectly OK to my ears) I can record the whole of this Sunday's 8hour Radio 3 World Music Day (their funny definiting of a day doesn't start until lunchtime) - on one disc - which means I can leave my MD hooked up to the radio (or better still the cable tv box - must remember to set the right channel!) all afternoon while I'm out and I don't have to fret about changing discs - hooray for 1Gb discs!

i´ve got 9 (1with the unit, and 8 bought separately) eight of which are already (partly) filled with either music or data. (haha... music data ! ph34r.gif D.are R.estrict M.e, you´re right Syrius !)

i´m planning to switch over completely to hi-mds the old ones simply don´t have enough space for me, because i like to carry a lot of music around with me, and in order to get a decent quality (=hi-sp) i need big disks...

but i really hate those new casings, why did they have to make them so unnecessarily big ? i´m glad i still have enuugh of the old ones, so i can use those..
