smkranz
i am thinking of getting my first ever job to pay for itThat's funny (or sad, as the case may be), I just got done telling a recording buddy of mine that I might have to get a *second* job to justify buying this toy, for fear of torquing off the Spousal Unit . garcou
Ok, I was a little fast with that sarcastic reply.I would like to see both a Hi-MD deck and a car unit. I would buy both in a heartbeat (about as fast as that last reply )I would buy both in half of a dog's heartbeat!
p4cman
Great design, makes my player look like something worth 2 bucks, which it probably is by now. I have to say the price seems pretty reasonable, but as always once it gets here (Estonia) it will most likely be double that. Which is also why I paid a rediculous amount for my current MD unit.I wouldn't mind owning this, although lately 1GB has started limiting my listening. I am a quality freak tho and always try to go for the best possible. Edited March 23, 2006 by p4cman
Syrius
@karaok350 € was the suggested price for Europe. And I don't think there is an optical line out ...Optical out would be needed only to connect to an amplifier, right? I mean, there's no need for that if you can now upload pretty much anything to your computer, convert to wav, and burn to CD.Shoot.. I can imagine how this can be useful for journalists, and radio stations: Go outside with any unit that can record SP and capture your material, come to the station, put it on the RH1, and upload. This makes previously obsolete SP-only units useful again. WAY TO GO, SONY! @DanielD90: I mean.. who needs an I-pod when you can do all that with the new Hi-MD? Now I can rub it on their faces: "Oh yeah. It's nice and all that.. but CAN YOU RECORD WITH DECENT QUALITY AND THEN UPLOAD TO YOUR COMPUTER? CAN YOU, CAN YOU? HUH, HUH? CAN YOU TAKE YOUR OLD RECORDINGS OR COMPILATIONS AND UPLOAD THEM IN FULL DIGITAL QUALITY? CAN YOU? NYA!Oh, man. I'm so excited right now. I need to go take some Prozac to calm down. undesign
Any Engadget readers out there? Ryan Block is getting a lot of flak for his comments today! http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/23/sonys-m...d-lives-alrightOf course he is, the guys an idiot, read my comment on how he shouldnt post news on technology he isnt familiar with (houseaddict). The guys an apple praising fanboy zealot. Its pretty obvious that the MiniDisc format is still going strong. The REAL killer is if sony would open up the format, making all discs UMS. Now that would be nice, no need for Sonic Stage, none of this "not mac compatible" crap, etc.
jadeclaw
What a waste of time making the RM-MC40ELK, if it;s only for use on pre HD5 sony audio devices. They should have made the 40elk the remote of choice for this thing. If you want to, you can get the RM-MC40ELK for this one.Sets you back only 8400 Yen.------------------------------------------------This Thread is really active: 287 Readers while I'm writing this. And to Sony: Very well done. MDGB2
The lack of AA cell support is pants. Think I'll pass on this unit. (You would have had a sale if you added an AA attachment Sony! )However, the rest is good, specially the ability to upload SP. Its good to see that the format is being kept alive, and they have nearly got it perfect, just need the HI-FI DECKS!Here's to the future! misran
Nice unit, hopefully it doesn't have the (or similar) design failure of MZ-N1 with the cracking recorder head-cable.I would take a look on the inner side before buying... I would blame myself neverending if I would fall in the same pit as with my Mz-N1 unit. A 50 cent cable cracks and Sony will repair it for half of the prize of a new unit.If guarantie lasts for 8 years, then what the heck... if not, think twice, look at the MZ-N1 topics and the inner design of this new unit!Nice gadget dough...Cheers,misranps. free up/down -load for everyone! mdmania
This is the best news I've heard from Minidisc ever. It has been awhile and I am so glad I kept my minidisc decks even though they have been collecting dust for so many months now. Now, I can finally make the use of them again and I don't feel that I wasted my investment on them. Sony if you happen to be listening, thank you for listening to us all. Even though it took some years and transistion in your company you finally got it right this time. Keep up the good work and looking forward to spend my money with this new Hi-MD and so glad I waited instead of settling down with MZ-M10 that I had before. Ingvar13
There will be no AA add-on attachment for this device, which is a strange move for Sony considering that this is aimed towards the live recording enthusiast; it will only employ a slim LIP-4WM battery. That is really sucks I will use my RH10.
ving
Well, it isn't dead yet. I still haven't jumped into a new HIMD unit or flash recorder like the Microtrak or the R1 from Edirol. This is pretty encouraging, but Edirol has just come out with a new unti, the R9 that looks great. FOr live recording, that may be the way to go. I like the format of MD but the SD flash record option is just too easy--having the slot right on my computer that is. The soft spot in my heart for md will still be there, but the R9 might be the next gadget for me...

Leland
I bought a RH910 about 9 months ago with the thought of copying SP and MDLP discs to HiMD to upload, but never did more than a few since it is so time consuming. Maybe I will sell the 910 to get this or perhaps buy this, rip all my old MD's, then sell the RH1 quickly while I can get a decent price. Hmmm. I wonder if the upload of SP preserves track titles? starvinmarvin
I used to be a big fan of md players for quite a while, bought them for 2 generations, now I think sony just sucks. Here my 2 big reasons not to buy another one:1:I prefer convienience over audio quality. no native mp3 support, no buy2:even if it did support mp3, if I can't just drag&drop from pc to player, no buy eitherSo what's so great about md players today? Not much really compared to average mp3 players. Giving u a chance to use ur earlier recordings is the least sony can do to reward u for sticking with their products for many years. In the end, they are just like Microsoft, wanting not a piece, but the whole cake, and looking at this forum, it seems they've found enough lemmings they can ATTARCT,DRM and Sonicstage I mean no offense, but I feel screwed with the course sony has taken, and now I wish my huge md collection was mp3 instead. ricklist_99
I agree with you on all these points. However, I travel to camps or places away from AC power. I use two rechargable 2500mAh NiMh AAs. Being able to carry many extra bateries or buying common AAs from a store in a pinch is real useful for me. Not being tied to a computer or having to be tied to an AC outlet to recharge is one of the main reasons I bought mini discs and not iPods. Ubiquitous AA batteries is an advantage that MiniDiscs stll have over iPods. I'm suprised Sony gave up that advantage. li ion batteries are expensive when you start buying a lot for backups . Still I guess Sony figured people wanted a slimmer form factor which li ion gives you.RickI actaully prefer the li ion battery. They have a longer lifespan compared to NIMH gumsticks, give you more acurate details on how much battery life if left (NH1 tells you how many hours are left) and do not suffer from the memory effect, so can be charged when they are half full. They can also be rapid charged in an hour. I would rather have a couple of li-ion batteries in my pocket than shelling out for high capacity AA batteries which take longer to recharge in a seperate recharger. Just my two cents on the issue, RH1 seems perfect for my needs!I agree!RickIf they're aiming this in any way at the pro market, or at anyone else who is depending on the unit to make a crucial live recording, then not having an external battery attachment is extremely stupid. 62v8
Sounds great (but I'd probably be horrified with the landed cost in Australia).MD SP transfer is long overdue.I'll stick with the 1st Gen MZ NH700 & 800 for my live recording (and the taper friendly AA cells). Hell I can even take my old MD recorder out to gigs again for back up records. Begs the question - where's the deck? Now a deck with similar transcoding features (and few more like optical out) .... I'd be beating the local dealers doors down. How about it Sony?Cheers

ricklist_99
I agree. For live recording SD flash is just getting too easy. Can you upload recorded concerts and jam sessions at anything faster than realtime speeds on this unit? I would love to have a portable player and a portable recorder be the same machine. I hope this unit can make this happen.RickWell, it isn't dead yet. I still haven't jumped into a new HIMD unit or flash recorder like the Microtrak or the R1 from Edirol.
