  1. Yes. It is believed that recording studios never used an Atrac version higher than 3.0. Therefore when making CD to MD digital copies using Atrac 4.5, the copies would sound just as good or better than the pre-recorded MD albums.
  2. I got my je520 (atrac 4.5) yesterday and hands down, the je470 makes better recordings. But atleast the CD to MD digital recordings on the je520 sound better than the pre-recorded versions of the early 90s. So je520 would be good to make CD to MD digital recordings for albums made before 1998, since it appears that pre-recorded MD albums were made with Atrac 3.0 and earlier.
  3. Check your local craigslist. Lots of peoplevsell minidisc stuff on it.
  4. Thanks for that info. I think I'm going to use the je470 for cd digital recordings from 2000 and forward. And I will use the je520 for cd recordings before year 2000. This will ensure that md copy will sound just like the prerecorded md versions. I have done cd to md digital copy of george michael greatest hits and I could not tell the difference between that and the prerecorded version. That md album was made in 1998. Did sony upgrade the atrac versions when making md albums? Or did it stop at 4.0 or 4.5?
  5. I also just purchased an MDS-JE520 which has ATRAC 4.5. It will be interesting to compare the sound quality of both decks. Maybe someone can do analysis between ATRAC 4.5 recorder deck and portable Type-R.
  6. MDietrich, can you respond? Did I misunderstand?
  7. No I havent. I just went by what has been said on this forum (MDietrich). She said 15.5 khz cutoff for Atrac 4.5 and earlier.
  8. I would like to know myself and I'm willing to challenge any ES ATRAC type-R home deck owners. I'm pretty sure that my $40 JE470 will produce the same recording quality as an ES model. My home deck is from 2002 which is newer than the ES models. So there's a chance that the ATRAC Type-R codec may have been slightly improved since the ES models were released. On another note, I'm considering getting an ATRAC 4.5 home deck model as well. I think you said that before ATRAC Type-R, there was a frequency cutoff of 15.5khz or so. I like the sound of the pre-recorded MD albums, and my understanding is that Sony never used Type-R to produce MD albums. It was always ATRAC 4.5 or earlier. So if my CD->MD digital copies using ATRAC 4.5 home deck can sound almost the same or exactly the same as the pre-recorded MD albums, then that's good enough for me. I like the frequency cutoff, because it actually makes the BASS more enhanced. Too much treble or highs seems to make the BASS sound weaker.
  9. Hello everyone. I just got an MDS-JE470 MiniDisc recorder from ebay for less than $41 (including shipping). It was a great deal! Unfortunately, it does not come with a remote and I'm still learning how to use it. It is an ATRAC DSP Type-R model. I would like to compare the recording quality of my JE470 to that of an ES or JB model. Maybe MDietrich could do the analysis for us to see if the recording quality is the same or not. But anyway, it's great to finally be able to use ATRAC DSP Type-R with no compromises.
  10. $150 U.S. dollars for all 33 minidisc albums shipped to California, U.S.A.???
  11. Lol. I meant the cases. Which ones are cracked? Its hard to tell from the pics.
  12. EExactly which are you selling again? Do you know which ones are cracked?
  13. Yeah. I see that you own an ES deck and a JE440. Both of these decks have ATRAC DSP Type-R. Can you tell me, in your opinion, which one makes better ATRAC SP recordings?
  14. It says 199 Euros. But I had no idea the dollar was so weak against the Euro nowadays.
  15. Then you can do the conversions and lose sound quality or you can just invest in a dedicated sony mp3 player.
  16. Yes, I've done it, but through the analog output from my PC to line input to the MD recorder. And it did sound pretty good! But still, it is a more compressed file and there is sound quality loss. I think it would be best if you burn those MP3s to an audio CD and then play that audio CD using optical output into your Hi-MD recorder and record in PCM (1.4mbps).
  17. So is it possible that my portable Type-R/Type-S recorder will record better than a stationary ATRAC 4.5 deck? Also, I've done a CD->MD copy of Billy Joel: River of Dreams using portable ATRAC Type-R and compared it with the original pre-recorded MD album and I honestly don't think I hear a difference.
  18. Some pre-recorded MDs sound just like the CDs. But you are right, most CD->MD digital copies will sound almost the same as the pre-recorded version, if not, better.
  19. There is no need to "hoard" or stash a bunch of MiniDisc items. There is no guarantee you will live long enough to enjoy them all fully. No one is guaranteed tomorrow. Collect a few favorites and enjoy those, but anything else, just sell it off. Honestly, this one guy from Texas was an MD fan, had a bunch of MD units, blanks and pre-recorded MD albums. He passed away, and not at an old age. He took none of it with him. His relative was left with all the MD items and sold them off. I happen to buy the pre-recorded MD albums that were left behind. Did I collect all these albums to keep? No. I sold them off one by one on ebay. So collect and few favorites and enjoy those. If you need MD blanks, there are plenty of people on craigslist nation wide that sell them cheaper than ebay. Good luck!
  20. But why the difference in price between ATRAC DSP Type-R home decks? They all record with the same sound quality.
  21. Honestly, I don't know why the ES models are special or overpriced. A $50 JE480 will record better than an ES model. So what's the point?
  22. Ok, then this is something I can pray about: Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” - Matthew 17:20
  23. Yes, I talk to the sellers first. I would send them money via Paypal, check or I would mail them the cash and they would ship me the MiniDisc items. Try your local craigslist first.
  24. How much for the Celine Dion (All the Way) minidisc???
  25. I'm sure you can search in your local craigslist.
