  1. yup the Type S is an enhanced Type R...like i said in my previous post "Type R is just for recording SP tracks and Type S uses Type R for recording but also uses the newer DSP to decode LP tracks"...and yes they're compatible with each other as they're still recording in the same ATRAC formats as each other...
  2. KLank i think it would work...since i've managed to get quite a few windows programs to work with VirtualPC...but i'm not 100% sure as i've not tried it myself nor do i own a mac (i only use one at work)
  3. yup i agree...AVEX has become bored these last few years i reckon as they pump out some pretty crappy stuff from otherwise good artists...
  4. if it's detected go and try d/l the new ASPI drivers from ADAPTEC and see if it gets recognised then...but yeh as kurisu and iceeedtea said above go back and complain to the pc manufacturer and get them to replace it if possible...
  5. hi there and welcome to the forums...
  6. the USB cable is nothing proprietary on the 510...just use a cable that will fit the socket on the unit (like the digital camera USB cables)...the power adaptor i would say yes IF the specs match up...as with USB cable...and software yup so long as it's from Sony go ahead...otherwise u can use RealOne or something to transfer over via USB as an alternative....
  7. if u want more recording time than the N10 look at the N910 as it uses removeable NiMH gumstick batteries rather than the low capacity internal Li-Ion battery the N10 uses...
  8. does the drive itself get recognised in the BIOS? if so then i think that XP doesn't seem to want to detect it...try looking at the device manager and see if it's shown there...if not try using a different IDE connector inside the case or just make sure the IDE connection is secure...if that doesn't work then i think u may have to reformat and reinstall again...
  9. use tmeg's program (if u have a NetMD) to transfer songs back to the PC...but it's still done in real-time and u need a normal stereo cable in order for this to work (i.e. record from MD -> PC)...see here for more details
  10. i think it is the remote...try using another remote and plugging it in to see if it does the same thing...if not then it's the unit...but i've seen 11EL remotes misbehave from time to time...heck sometimes a screwed up 11EL remote i have when put into my E900 player would all of a sudden play at odd times...i only realise when i hear a faint sound coming from the headphones...just had to replace it with a new remote and it works fine now...
  11. well i would suggest that u wait for the new Hi-MD units to come out...because u might end up kicking yourself if you buy a NetMD now and realize in a few months that the new units which can hold up to 1GB in data and around 8hrs in Hi-SP mode comes out around the same pricing...but as for pros and cons of the N10 i'll just simply list them below : pros : small, nice aesthetics, light, has backlit remote and is the flagship model of Sony at the moment... cons : the sound output leaves something to be desired (IMO my N1 sounds better than it), internal Li-Ion battery is of low capacity and doesn't last very long... overall it's a nice unit but i think u'd be better off buying the N910 over the N10 as it has everything the N10 does but has a removeable NiMH gumstick battery that u can swap around during recordings when one runs low...
  12. try opening up OpenMG w/o the unit plugged in...then once it's opened up plug the unit into the USB port...see if that detects it...if not just reinstall the drivers again w/o the MD unit plugged in...it shouldn't say "New Device Found" after u've installed the drivers...if it does then just install the drivers again...i've found this to work for me...
  13. i own an DS8 and can say that ur making a good decision buying the unit...
  14. congrats on getting ur MD...hope u enjoy the unit...and welcome to the MD community... feel free to post any questions you might have and we'll try to answer them as best we can...
  15. yup the EX71's are a good pair...if u want a good cheap pair of buds go for the Sennheisser MX-500's...nice pair of buds plus good value for money...
  16. yep it is cheaper over in those countries than in europe...but i wouldn't worry so much about adapters or software...software u can d/l from various links posted around this forum and the adapter u can buy when u get back to europe...
  17. well MD's and HDD based players are targetted at a different audience...so it's not really that fair to compare them directly...it just will depend on the user's needs...i use an iPod for storage and the MD for recording...that's how i see that both products are being used effectively...but i've been kinda annoyed at my iPod's hdd failing just recently so i spose they need to have more protection around it...
  18. don't think this works coz that USB port only recognises the cable that's meant to be connected to ur PC to enable NetMD transfers...but yeh as kurisu said giveit a shot and see how it goes...^^
  19. only thing i don't like about the 12ELK remote is the font...that's about it...
  20. heyy there...i'll keep my answers simple and straight to the point, 1) yes and no...there are models which feature a mic inbuilt into the unit...otherwise the others need for you to carry around a mic to plug into the unit... 2) yes u can... 3) yep u can do basically do a lot of editing functions straight from the recorder unit... 4) yes u will be at the next "spot" provided that the MD is set to "Record from end" mode...
  21. i don't think LP2 quality suffers when transfering from PC as opposed as recording via optic...it's SP that suffers and not LP2...not too sure where u heard this but i don't think this is true...i could be wrong though...
  22. no it's not unfortunately...u need to buy the new units to be able to record to it as it uses a different way to record the data on the MD...
  23. if it's still under warranty take it back...they will fix it free of charge...after the warranty has expire they will fix it but at a price..the time taken for the unit to be repaired varies...it was around 2 odd weeks for my N1 to get back to me....but generally the service is generally good...
  24. yep that's wot's meant to happen...the USB take priority over the other connections...sux but that's the way it is i'm afraid...
