  1. Their site is a little skimpy on the menu navigation and ripping/tagging options on the unit. Seems like a hefty price tag for a device with no internal backup and limited storage, is it really worth that much extra to not have a PC running? You could accomplish this with an old Windows or Unix PC in the basement and a Squeezebox for less than a quarter of the price while maintaining the same audio quality. The PC portion of the equation lends itself well to the ripping and tagging, not to mention backup. Plus that ripped collection is then available for other uses away from the stereo (laptop, MD, whatever). It sucks spending hours/days/weeks ripping and tagging your collection only to have a harddrive crash wipe it all out. Just my $.02

  3. Just stop buying major label music. Hitting them in the wallet is far more satisfying IMO.
  4. Ishi, are you considering getting rid of your NH1 now that you have the RH1? In all respects it seems to be a more than suitable replacement unit. I've been debating whether to keep all three units (NH1, RH10, RH1) or to sell the NH1 when I eventually get my hands on a RH1.

  6. kurisu, invest in one of these puppies. http://www.valentine1.com/
  7. Stuge, do you find 11 less annoying than 9 or 10 during video playack? 9's interface elements would always get in the way or took up too much screen area to effectively run a windowed player. 10 made great strides in this area, much more streamlined and configurable such as being able to remove the 'now playing' bars and whatnot. I like to run a small player on top of the browser or other apps but if the interface is too large it makes this impossible.
  8. Thanks Ishi. I'm so tempted to bite the bullet and pay Audiocubes' $429 price tag for one of these black units. They're just so damn sexy.
  9. Yes, the OLED face. It's supposedly angled slightly so you can view the screens easily when the unit is set on a table. It's just that none of the pictures of the RH1 (even from Sony) I've seen really depict how much of an angle there is.
  10. During RECORDING? I was under the impression the anti-skip was only during playback on at least one generation of Hi-MD.
  11. Nice pics Ishi. Have you had an opportunity to compare audio sections between the RH1 and the NH1? I think it was mentioned that Sony has improved some of the circuitry around the HD amp in the RH1. Also do you have any side photos showing the angle of the front displays? The perspective and top-down shots don't show how far back the top of the main screen is skewed back from the bottom.
  12. Not to mention the fact that you don't get the HD-DVD player with the 360 NOR can the 360 even do 1080p. 360 is a piece of crap. PS3 is going to blow it away.
  13. This is definitely a good one. More coherent and listenable but fewer 'hits' than the others.
  14. Nice translation and according to it recording is done to ram then bursted to the media. Interesting, as this should also act like an anti-skip for recording.
  15. Tape 12 was released today. Happy downloading.

I'll see what happens if I format the disc with Windows.
  18. Plugging the device in doesn't create a sd* entry in /dev? On FreeBSD all my HiMD units show up as da* devices in which case a simple mount_msdos /dev/da0a /mnt Just Works™

  20. I've received no email or PM from any admins or the forum itself.
  21. From what I've read the headphone jacks of AVRs or mini-systems are not driven off the main amp, but usually a dedicated headphone amplifier. Usually these headphone amps are simple and not of high quality. Again this is from what I've seen on head-fi, so someone feel free to jump in here if they disagree. It seems the opinion over there is that a handful of high end stereo AVRs or dedicated speaker amplifiers have a good headphone out section. I plan on level matching (with oscilloscope) and comparing the headphone jack on my Harman AVR, a pocket cmoy, the direct headphone out of my NH1, and the new Gilmore amp once I receive it. I'll post impressions then. edit: Oh and I didn't buy this for use away from home, though it is still somewhat manageable for transport to work and such.
  22. Yep, 2 years parts and labor. If you want impressions on the build and sound quality search for 'gilmore lite' over at headfi. There are plenty of reviews in their amp section as well. Kevin Gilmore, the original designer, is a god to alot of people over there. He also came up with the dynahi and dynalo designs that people rave about. It's a very solid performing amp for a good price IMO.
  23. Yep, directly from headamp.com. There's a 10-14 day lag time while they build the unit for you.
