i'd like to see a comparison between MP3, OGG, SP, HiSP, and WMA all at bit rates between 250-320kbps and see what the results say

maybe but if the 1st gen units indeed are able to only read in FAT16 then it might be more 'worthwhile' to make one that is 'backwards compatible' wait who are we trying to kid here its sony lol

yes never use 48 but i still cant understand how you can go from HiSP to HiLP and be happy, that loss in quality is sticks out very much

All HiMD units can upload to PC digitally and since the advent of SonicStage 2.3 there have been no known problems with lost recordings

ya but depending on the song HiLP can actually sound fairly good, although no matter what you choose it'll still sound like crap compaired to PCM/HiSP

hmm no... try holding down the NAVI/MENU button until a menu comes up. Go to Edit > Format and see if that makes a difference, or try formatting it through SonicStage

what happened what the table of contents failed to write to the disc. This not only causes it too appear as though there are no songs but also for the player to give you a format error (it thinks its formatted wrong because there is no TOC for it to see). The only way that i personally can think to fix this is to go ahead and give her the old format. If this problem occurs again with this disc only then it is the discs problem, however if your other discs start acting up it may be a hardware problem

all HiMDs have custom and preset EQs so you can get all the BASS you want

Aparently no one knows lol Too bad sony didnt make an interactive device (like a game device) that used hybrid MDs, store data from the developers and save your progress

although the encoders might be different. wasn't it Sharp that used their own Atrac encoder instead of licensing it from Sony?

maybe the encoding/transfer time but not the write time. Besides we're going with estimates here anyways

yes i did mean it as a data drive sorry i didnt mention it. Also Sony showed a HiMD Digital Camera, don't a lot of newer cameras have built in movie abilities?

A Little Question About The Atrac/atrac3/atrac3+

yes but thats also a different extention of Atrac3 all together. There is an Atrac3 codec you can get for WMP that will play WAV files (actually Atrac3 files but with a .wav extention). This is similar to the way RealPlayer does it however it is completely different then the way MDs do it. although 105kbps is 'defined' as LP2 in SonicStage i believe it began life as LP3 for network walkmans (please correct) -
its a limitation imposed on by both the hardware and MO media in general. It's been well known since the first incarnation of HiMD that the USB1.1 ceiling is still much larger than the transfer speed. Even if you think of it this way: HiMD can play PCM files. PCM runs at 1141kbps or (1141/8) approx. 142.625KB/s. This makes sense since a CD-ROM 1x drive runs at 150KB/s (giving it just enough speed to read the audio from a CD.) Therefore HiMD must also be able to read at 150KB/s but also faster so that it can fill the memory buffer. USB1.1's max is somewhere around 11mbps (which is theoretical and therefore never actually reached in a practical setting). 11mbps ~ 1.375MB/s Figuring that you'll get maybe half the speed they say is the theoretical limitation that gives you around 688KB/s bandwidth from USB1.1. In my own experiments I have found that you can get anywhere from 200-almost 800KB/s 'transfer' speed to a HiMD device but with a much lower write speed. What this means is the cache RAM of the HiMD device can be filled at a rate of 200-800KB/s. If you do a quick search on the Internet (or do your own experiments) you can find that the time it takes for you to transfer a file and then wait until the REC message dissappears is much greater and thus the actual write speed must be that much lower. In conclusion (if you're still with me here) even though the transfer to the HiMD device is relatively quick the time it takes to complete a disc write (not to mention if it has to seek to a free location mid-write) is very large. MO media is slow and in that way needs nowhere close to USB1.1's max transfer abilities let alone 2.0

well if you wished (and i have done this before) you can throw a divX movie and a decoder onto a HiMD and get pretty decent video quality playback
