  1. I think we need to add a FAQ area for the various discs. This section could include the following (see below) as well as the differences between manufactrs and 'premium' discs. Anywhere i have a '?' listed below i do not know the exact specifications and would greatly appreciate feedback (if your post checks out I'll edit my initial post to include your information). Here's what I've compiled so far: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I think there should be a FAQ for the differences between using standard MD60/74/80 discs and HiMD discs. For example total space, write/access speeds etc. HiMD Disc Total Capacity: 1GB or approx. 964MB Approx. Write Speed: ?? Approx. Read Speed: ?? # of Times Recordable: ?? MD80 Disc Total Capacity MD: Approx. 171MB Total Capacity HiMD: 291MB Approx. Write Speed: ?? Approx. Read Speed: ?? # of Times Recordable: 1 million MD74 Disc Total Capacity MD: Approx. 159MB Total Capacity HiMD: 270MB Approx. Write Speed: ?? Approx. Read Speed: ?? # of Times Recordable: 1 million MD60 Disc Total Capacity MD: Approx. 129MB Total Capacity HiMD: ??MB Approx. Write Speed: ?? Approx. Read Speed: ?? # of Times Recordable: 1 million ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ post what you wish me to add
  2. no SP is 'Atrac' at 292kbps, there are various hardware version of Atrac though, they range from ver 1.0 to 4.5 Atrac3 standard MD bitrates are 132kbps/66kbps LP3 introduced with sony network walkmans use Atrac3 at 105kbps. To answer the other question I have no idea if 132kbps is the highest Atrac3 can go, however with the introduction of 105kbps i assume it can be anywhere between 132kbps and 66kbps
  3. like i said my only problem with bookmarks is the fact that if you edit the disc at all you loose all of your bookmarks. an on HiMDs depending on your chosen codec you may have a LOT of bookmarks to lose
  4. actually it wouldnt change the write speed at all HiMD at its max is well below USB1.1 at its max, USB2.0 would just leave extra room for... nothing Although if/when Sony ever comes out with higher density discs it should also boost the write speed. Same size but a higher density means more info in a smaller spot means able to write more data to the same spot = higher write speed
  5. A hybrid disc is a mixture of both premastered and recordable sectors. It comes with music on it the same way a premastered disc does but it also has a section for the user to record to. What is the point? Did any of these even get made?
  6. the NH700 came in a plastic death trap
  7. no ur not wrong but it would all have to be done within the confines of the Atrac3 codec. it couldnt be done in the Atrac codec because that has fixed everything (i.e. bit rates, sector lengths etc). but yes theoreticaly sony could come out with a 96kbps Atrac3 bit rate if they wanted to and i see no huge reason why it wouldnt work
  8. yes, you upload the files into SonicStage, Open up Sony Wav Coverter and then transfer them to Wavs for editing
  9. try doing the following before you unplug it -Close SonicStage -Press Stop/Cancel/Chrg and wait until it says disc eject ok -Eject the disc -On Windows, clikc the Safe Remove Hardware thing in the task bar, open that up, select USB Mass Storage device and clikc Stop -Then unplug
  10. you plug the charger in and then you must press Cancel/Chrg on the unit to start the charging process
  11. that it will, when the Sony lawers stop ringing
  12. you contradicted yourself im pretty sure this means that the device will be able to nativly play back MP3/Atrac/Atrac3/Atrac3+ media (i.e. direct playback) and that SonicStage supports all popular formats to transcode to Atrac (same as it has always said). if you go to a store a look at the box of a netMD it'll say MP3 compatible but what they mean is SS can handel it
  13. meh its alright welcome to the community (himd community that is )!
  14. very good news indeed. it seems like sonys trying to push all of their abilities at once here and get some 'good' things rolling
  15. maybe an Atrac3 decoder can playback any Atrac3 file no matter the bitrate. I remember if you out a netMD Atrac3 MD into a standard MD it'll show odd things depending on the bitrate but maybe in the Atrac3 decoder it doesnt matter as much. In this way the file could be transferred to the MD wrapped in a 132kbps meta file, appear to be a 132 file for the display, and yet still playback without converstion.
  16. HDCD is jsut a slight upgrade to the current CD market and one which doesnt even come close to covering it, most CDs are not HDCD
  17. only very slightly if u strain to hear it, otherwise not at all. And HiSP sounds incredible. if you have a CD burner you can test it out for yourself by converting files into the various Atrac codecs and bruning an audio CD for your CD player
  18. not necessarily HiMD discs are not like normal MDs, they do not have predictable TOC positions or lengths and thus reconstruction and data backup/retreival is much harder than it previously was
  19. once you go HiMD you dont go back, its like the difference between Original MD and netMD magnified 1000 times
  20. oh god shut up everyone shut up! lol i use my himd for both audio and data as it serves my purposes for music and small file transfer
  21. the 2nd gen probably wont play WMA SonicStage cannot use playlists however you could group all your 'playlist' songs into one 'collection' and transfer that over, its different but more or less works
  22. look it doesnt matter about the reflective components the fact remains that the majority of what makes up a CD is plastic. Plastic warps and melts under heat, like sunlight
  23. very simple way to check. If two files are encoded one in 132kbps and one in 105kbps the first one will be larger due to its greater bit rate correct? now transfer the first song to the MD, note the recording time remaning delete that song and transfer the second song to MD the recording time remaining will be identical - but how is this so if one file is smaller than the other? it is because it is wrapped in 132 to preserve uniform compatibility Tools > Options > Location To Save Recorded Files
  24. NO! lol your confusing the issue with something completely different and completely off topic. I'm glad you are a part of this forum and that you are very into posting but please hold off on posting random information that will confuse people. [FACT] -codec wrapping exists and works but *only* in the case of transferring Atrac3 105kbps to a netMD. It wraps the file without converting. Therefore the MD thinks its playing back a 132kbps file however you only get 105kbps sound quality. -Atrac3+ cannot be played back on netMD or pre netMD units. The file is first reconverted in SonicStage before transfer to netMD -if you put a MD with Atrac3 audio on it into a pre netMD unit it will not play any of the audio. -you cannot transfer true Atrac (i.e. Atrac SP) when using SonicStage. It first converts the filw to 132kbps then sends it via USB to the recorder where it is resampled and interpreted into Atrac SP. It is possible in this way to make a MD created using SonicStage play in a pre netMD unit
