  1. The system will lock the lid if there was a power loss while recording IIRC. The unit plays so maybe that's not it. Maybe if you try to transfer something to it or record and let it do a TOC save then it will release the lid lock. I am grasping here but may be worth a shot.
  2. The other option if that does not work would be to record from a CD player with optical output. You will definitly get the correct track marks if you do it that way.
  3. Don't mac's have optical out? You could use that instead. If the mac sends the track info over optical (I am not sure on this) the track marks would coincide with the tracks on the CD. Even if it does not send the track mark info I think it will record it as one big track. At least that's what happens on my PC via the optical out on my Extigy.
  4. On the N510 a headphone jack solder point is probably broken. It would need to be soldered back onto the board if the tab is not broken completely. Maybe the jack contacts are dirty, but I don't think so. On the N710, are you using the Sony stock power adapter? That message appears when the input voltage is too high. Either the adapter is not supplying the correct voltage or the sensor that reads the voltage is damaged. In the case of the adapter being damaged you can just replace the power adapter or if a universal adapter is being used make sure that the voltage is set properly. In either case (N510 & N710) it would probably be easier and more cost effective to get a "new" unit on eBay than trying to get it repaired unless you can attempt to repair it yourself.
  5. I have the JE330 and have not experienced the problem you mention. I usually record from my CD deck and use the remote to put the MD deck and CD player on record standby mode then just press the start button. Everything starts up automatically and I just let it go until finished.
  6. Hehe, The R900 is an old school recorder. No editing woes. You don't have to worry about uploading either.
  7. Yes, if there is a two second silence or the sound level is too low, a new track will be added. I just go back and edit them out.
  8. Why would you want 128? I don't think it is worth the effort if you already have 132 available.
  9. Just saw this thread. Excellent! I really like the altoids tin case. I don't mind the extra bulk. I am going to have to try this!
  10. After thinking about this some more I believe it is just simple, planned obsolescence.
  11. Li-Ion batteries start deteriorating starting on the date of manufacture, even if stored properly. Properly storing the battery just slows down the decay. The battery may just be too old.
  12. A Guy Called Gerald - Essence - @ 192 kbps
  13. I have an external card. Extigy to be exact. That uses USB so no problem there. Yeah, nobody give me grief about it! It works. Never had trouble with the optical I/O's. The feature I love the most is the "record what you hear" option. I never have to mess with the recording mixer unless I am adjusting levels, which is rare. It is outdated and can only be found mostly on eBay nowadays. Our studio rig has an Audiophile 2496 but that has no optical I/O's just coaxial-digital and line level analogue so that would not work for you. I don't think I would go searching for a new card just yet. Did this card come with your system or was it purchased seperate? For some reason I was under the impression that this was onboard sound. If seperate, have you contacted the manufacturer for tech support? Same goes if it came with your rig. If it is onboard sound, did you check the BIOS to see if there are options that may be turned off? EDIT Dex: I forgot totally about the monitoring quirk, good call.
  14. Well apparently there is since we don't have the ability to transfer it. Based on your points I am obliged to think it is greedy pockets??? It just does not make sense, if what you say is true. (I am not saying it is not true just making an assumption which I cannot back up). What is it about the SP codec that Sony does not want to make as a codec on the PC? Why all the taboo around it? Please note that my questions are rhetorical.
  15. If it is greyed out (and yes that is meaningful, you need to be able to select it to record from it) then it can be one of three things. 1. It is a defective input (I don't think it is this but it's possible) 2. Improper driver installation. 3. Some sort of SCMS protection keeping you from recording the audio stream. I tried googling some info on any copy protection that may be on your box but could not find anything conclusive. I would start focussing on the drivers. EDIT* You are trying to record from the optical output on the MD deck, correct? If that is so, the MD deck will definitly have SCMS protection. I don't know if the sound card discards this info. It usually does since SCMS does not normally apply to computer audio. Things are changing though and I have heard of some manufacturers implementing it, mainly Creative.
  16. I am just guessing here but I think you may have your S/PDIF input muted in the recording mixer. Double click your volume icon in the system tray, go to options, then properties. Click the recording radio button and then make sure you have check marks on all the listings under "Show the following volume controls:" section. One of those should be your S/PDIF input. The mixer will show up again when you click "OK" but this time it is the recording mixer. click the "select" box under your S/PDIF input and adjust the volume accordingly.
  17. Yes, it's just 1's and 0's but it is 1's and 0's wrapped up in a veil of DRM that apparently Hi-MD cannot even crack. The way I see it, there is something done at the hardware level that is not compatible with Hi-MD thus making it not possible to upload.
  18. Richyhu was able to upload some of the tracks I sent to him for the Holiday MD trade. Those were downloaded via USB on my NHF800 via SS 3.2.
  19. This is just an estimate but I had a Hi-MD burned at 256k and I redid it at 192k. I had 8 albums on it before and now I think I can fit about 10. I did not have enought time to fill it last night but I'll find out tonight.
  20. The problem is in the hardware. Even if it could be allowed through software it would most likely be realtime anyway. The only advantage would be title transfer capabilities like what winnetmd does already. I don't think people would value that as much as being able to upload faster than real time with Hi-MD.
  21. innovate and change, and do it quickly or die. I posted this over at the T board but has anyone bothered reading the EULA? Specifically this: So I just agreed that they can limit the amount of times that I backup my library. I agree that they can deny my restoration privilages. I opened a back door for Sony to come in whenever they please. Was this in previous versions?
