  1. I received an early Christmas present from my brother! Sennheiser HD-201's! Wow! These things sound way better than anything I have. Crisp highs and tight bass. I did a quick test last night and it literally sounds like night and day. I can't beleive these $20 cans sound so good. When I use my old headphones it sounds like I stuffed cotton in my ears compared to these. Love them.
  2. I record real-time from my MD deck/portables in analog all the time. I also have an external sound card to minimize on noise that could possibly be picked up by internal cards. I have always been happy with my recordings quality. I think you would notice very little to no difference. (I have used the optical out on the MZ-1 too.) I think you need to worry about the quality of your recordings while you are actually doing the first generation recording. If your original is clean then most likely your copy on the PC will be clean too.
  3. If you want a portable with optical out then it would be the MZ-1. It is an SP only recorder though. You are also only going to find these used, unless someone is sitting on a stash of new ones somewhere.
  4. Man, why does Sony keep all the good stuff out of the US?
  5. I don't know but the remote has a 4 pole plug plus another two contacts in the very base of the plug. Sort of like an RCA plug. If you look at the headphone jack on the actual unit pictures above, it even sort of looks like an RCA jack. I wish someone that understands Japanese would translate the manual that is found in the browser.
  6. Hmmm. I guess "AnyDVD" saved me then. I just played it in my computer. No EULA.
  7. I use 3.5" diskette labels and a template I made in MS Publisher + photoshop. You could do them in just about any program that can print labels. It is just a matter of adjusting the templates to your needs.
  8. I stand corrected . Does it have the line/optical too?
  9. MOst models with a "D" at the end of the model name means that it is a downloader only. This basically means that you will be limited to transferring via USB and Sonic Stage or Simple Burner. You do not have an input to record directly from other sources. The "NF" part of the model number means that it is A NetMD enabled unit and it has a radio tuner. To be honest, you could probably do better with a MZ-NH700 or if you really want the radio, a MZ-NHF800. The prices you can get them for are really good compared to the NF520D.
  10. Since when? http://www.minidisc.org/images/sony_mznh600_silver_mymd.jpg I have always known that the US version 600D (which I did own) had a remote port but did not have line/optical input nor the DC input. The Euro version (600) has line/optical/DC input but no remote and a crippled amp.
  11. Cool! Good info. I did not know you could do that.
  12. It should work on both units. The 600 is the one that cannot use a remote. I am thinking maybe videos on how to do some of this stuff may be very handy. At least it would be easier to explain. Hmmmm, maybe a project I will tackle.
  13. Basically yes. See my edits above^ ( with picture)
  14. Yes, you can do it without a remote. The NH600 does not have a remote slot. The NH600D does have a remote slot. Here is a picture of the 600D. See that round thing on the top right. It is a shuttle/scroll button. If I were to turn it while the unit is playing, you would scroll through all the folder names vertically on the LCD of the unit. To start playing a selected folder all I would have to do is scroll until I found the folder I want to play. Then I would push the enter/play button in the center of the scroller.
  15. To be honest, I have never heard of TOC cloning done on portables. All the guides I have ever seen have been for decks.
  16. It might be in the service manual: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-N707.html
  17. You would need to group your songs. You need to create folders named XXXartist, xx2artist, and so on then drop your songs to the corresponding artist in each folder. The shuttle dial/Group+/- button on the remote would then be used to navigate between the folders during playback. Vioala, artist navigation!
  18. You can still zap something and not even feel it. I don't remember the exact figures but when you actually feel the zap your are discahrging something like 30,000( I looked it up and it is 1500) volts. You can create up to 12,000 volts by just walking across a rug. Remember volts don't kill you, amps do. Volts as low as 10V can kill electronics though.
  19. Watched Stealth. It was okay I guess. Lots of action but I could predict what was going to happen in the movie too easily. It was typical formulaic action.
  20. The eject mechanism is the same as you describe. It took me a little to figure it out but if you just hold the eject lever "down" with your thumb it is actually very easy to change discs. I actually like the system. It keeps me from forgetting to close the door when I am done. Thanks for the kind comments. Couple of questions, does anyone have an english manual for this unit? Does anyone know if this unit accepts 4 pole headphones? The remote seems to suggest yes?
  21. Okay, I had a good hour with the unit and like atrain said, the sound signature takes some getting used to. It does grow on you. I found that the first base setting and the normal EQ setting were best for the type of music I was listening to (electronica). I do not like the 2nd base setting or "train", whatever that is.
  22. Unfortunately no cradle. I have tried it with some SP recordings and my Pana JE50's. I notice the bass is tight but a little lacking on the highs. I attribute that to the JE50's. Will have to try my EX71's with it. Definitley different to the Sony signature sound, that's for sure. I have an Aiwa too and feel it is just a tad less bassy than the Aiwa. I really have to listen in a quiet environment. I have not had a chance to do that yet. The remote is about average quality. Curiously I feel it is of better quality than the 33EL.
  23. Thanks! Valder (Darrin) was hinting around that he was going to get rid of some MD units on the other board. I decided to ask him what he wanted to get rid of before he actually put them up for sale.
