Simple Burner will not install on Vista... help?
culp4684 replied to theblueraja's topic in Software
How come? Isn't Vista supposed to be backwards compatible to any program that worked on XP? -
I had trouble seeing them yesterday as well. They did come through later on, now they're gone again... I must have missed it. Where does he say he's selling any deck??

Great setup. Looks like you're good to go for some old fashioned real time recordings. A true lost art!

The only issue I am having with my RH1 (also a couple of years old) is that some of the white lettering is wearing off on the back. A minor thing, really, as the unit has worked flawlessly otherwise...

You will get gapless playback with MD through Sonicstage as long as you don't go through any conversion. In other words, if you intend to use Hi-SP as a final result on your MD's, you must import your CD's at 256 kbps into My Library. I found this out because I was importing CD's at 352 kbps, figuring the higher bit rate was good because there would be no loss if I decide to go to Hi-Sp or even lower. But those transfers do result in short "gaps" in between songs. Not sure about any quality loss...only your ears can tell the difference. So if you stick with the same bit rates, or just use standard SP in real time recording, you'll be fine...

Is a cheap LIP-4WM battery likely to be genuine
culp4684 replied to Hungerdunger's topic in Minidisc
OK...I guess when anyone mentions gumsticks, I always think of the Ni-MH battery. But in all fairness, the original poster was referring to the LIP-4WM. Two totally different technologies... -
This is a great question as I have often wondered the same thing. It sounds like you've thought of more proctective measure than I have. All I've ever done is remove the batteries...

How did we get on the subject of gumsticks? The original poster is talking about his NH-1. Besides, gumsticks are readily available from genuine e-tailers like Budget Batteries and others at relatively inexpensive prices. I've bought two li-ons for my NH-1 and RH-1 during the past year from a Chinese seller on ebay. Both have had absolutely no problems and are still working fine. Like anything else, just deal with the sellers who have great feedback. -
The primary reason a deck has a digital out is for connection to an external digital to audio converter. In most cases (like mine), that means connecting to an amp or receiver that has a digital input. This buypasses the DAC of the deck and puts the work on the supposedly better one in the amp/receiver. Since it sounds like your setup is sans an amplifier...I wouldn't worry about the lack of an optical out. Frankly, your RH1 should be more than sufficient. I can't imagine anyone buying the Onkyo unit and not connecting it to a home stereo system.

OK...I believe I've found your answer. I was wondering the same thing because I had transferred the Beatles "Love" album last year and could have sworn I heard slight gaps between the many songs that run together. Evidently it has to do with how the transfer mode settings are selected. If you set them to "standard transfer mode" and no conversion has to take place, you will get gapless results. If you select a different bit rate, you'll hear gaps in between the songs. I just verified this by transferring the above mentioned Beatles album and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". All my music is saved in My Library at 256 kbps. I did the first job making one disc with both titles in standard mode and presto...no gaps. I then did another disc converting the 256 kbps to 192. Gaps were very evident... Edit: OK...looks like Rosjos beat me to it. I'm just a slower typer!

Latest Sonic stage software - Net Walkman MZ-N710
culp4684 replied to peachesswimming's topic in Software
Just click on the transfer mode settings and select "SP transfer mode". The resulting quality you get won't come near true SP (real time) recording. But it will fit your needs... -
When will they ever learn? This will deep six faster than UMD...

Ive been thinking about getting another E10 myself. But what worries me is that the last ones were probably made over four years ago and those internal li-on batteries aren't going to last forever. I think there were a few brave souls who tried replacing the battery, but it isn't easy. Also, the replacements themselves can't be that fresh even if you could find one...

What...no rabbit ears?

That's amazing because a lot of people claim FLAC is one of the best codecs when it comes to sound quality. What type of unit were you using?
-
They also left it out of some of the others in the line of second generation Hi-MD units (RH710, RH910). These had the digital amps to save power, but weren't HD. Also, the first generation NH600, NH700 and NH800 didn't have any kind of digital amp. Sadly, Sony never made any player only units that were compatible to MP3. I believe the only recorders that did this were the RH1/MZM-200, RH10/M10 and DH10.
-
Since you already have the two Hi-MD recorders, why not get a player only unit? The sound quality would be pretty much the same and they are less expensive. You could get either the MZ-EH50 or 70 at Pricejapan.com among a few other sources...

Very interesting question... I have over 70 GB in my SS library and a lot was saved at 352 kbps. I've often downconverted to 256 kbps and notice no difference in similar CD recordings transferred directly to that bit rate. I'm thinking it's all Atrac, so why should there be any quality loss at the same rates? Now if you were going from MP3 to Atrac, that's a whole different story...

Since you live in the US, try visiting your local Target store. Go to the luggage section and you should find a voltage conversion set for around $10. I bought one for my daughter before she went to Europe last summer. As the wiz says, you may also have to get a new Ni-MH gumstick. Those are available pretty cheaply here.

All Sony Net MD recording units are MDLP and will have a USB port... It may come down to your "bass enhancement" issue. All can do this in one form or another with the custom EQ settings. But I don't believe any Sony has the Sharp feature of Bass 1, 2 or 3. Maybe the real old ones (pre-2000) did, I'm not sure. The IM-DR80 has a bass enhancement button right on the remote and fits your other criteria, although it's optical/line in is on the docking cradle and of course, it's not a Sony. There is quite a few on the Equipment Browser, but you'll probably have to settle for just a few choices and they will most likely be used. The only new NetMD unit that I know of that is still being sold in Japan is the MZ-N920. Because you'll probably have to pay around $300 or more shipped, you're probably better off buying an RH-1 or MZM-200 which aren't much more. They also fill your criteria... Good luck...

Seriously...Yodobashi ships outside Japan? Like maybe to the USA?

Isn't it 2 hours and 20 minutes (140 total) at Hi-SP on a standard "80 minute" disc?
-
At least some of us are smart enough to read Joplin's profile to see he is from Canada.
-
If I'm not mistaken, every unit that Sony released since the MZ-N10 (not counting the E10) has had the Atrac type S feature. That includes all of the Hi-MD models...
-
What I meant was any recording unit labeled with Type S does include Type R recording for SP. That is kind of covered in item # 10 here.
