That's cheap! Does the $5 price include the 5 finger discount? That's a dollar per finger! What a bargan!

Hey all, I'd really appreciate some insight on this one... Does anyone know if it is possible to fix damaged SHN files? I seem to remember something from one of my computer classes about compressed data becoming worthless if it gets corrupted, but is that really the case? I downloaded a concert recording, and all the files fail the .md5 check. I assume each file has the same problem, since each one decodes into a 4KB wav file that doesn't play. Is there a tool that will decode through errors, or fix the files? I'm not afraid to open them in a text editor and try removing some extra data that is causing the errors. Thanks in advance for any help.

For computer data, you really may just be better off backing your data up to CD-R or writable DVDs. I've had a couple Hi-MD discs go bad on me (come to think of it, I've had some standard discs go bad too), and if you really want to talk about reliable data backup, I just don't see how Hi-MD can cut it. Even if you use standard MDs for this, figuring that they're 300MB each and they cost about the same as a CD-R (roughly 99 cents), CD-Rs will give you more than twice as much storage space for the same price. Of course, this may not matter very much to you since you already own a lot of standard MDs. Hi-MD is handy for moving data from computer to computer, and it has a high coolness factor, but if you really want to backup data, I'd say stick to using writable CDs and DVDs. After burning, verify the data on the discs, keep them free of scratches and dirt, and your data will live happily ever after.

<--is jealous. I've got to get a MDS-JB980.

Welcome to the forums. Check the manual that came with your NH1 to find out how to leave the backlight on the remote on all the time. The display on the unit is not backlit. If you don't have a manual for the NH1 you can download it from minidisc.org. EDIT: My mistake, I see that you're asking about the MZ-1. I have no experience with that model, but here's a link to almost everything you could ever want to know about it... http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-1.html

Yeah, let's get some Hi-MDs from other companies up in this mofo. What the crap?
-
Sounds good. That's the same deal I got with my defective NH1, and it seems to be working fine now.

This is not a poll.

I own three units (not including my broken Silver MZ-R55 that smells like gunpowder). MZ-NH1 (Silver) MZ-RH10 (Black) MZ-R55 (Blue) I need to get a kick-ass deck...one that can do TOC cloning.

Good question. You'll defenitly want to run the SonicStage backup utility to keep any mic recordings you've created and uploaded. Of course, if you've converted ALL of your mic recordings to WAV files and stored them somewhere else, then you can blow away the atrac files without worry. I suppose that running the SonicStage backup, and then restoring that backup to a fresh installation will also restore all the dead links and songs listed in your library that you want to get rid of. Hmm. Fellow members, any ideas?

I was wondering about that! I had to do another upgrade the other day, and wasn't sure about the difference between the Canadian version vs. US version. I was only concerned because the labels on the back of my NH1 indicate that it was manufactured for sale in Canada, but I use it in the US. No big deal, I see.
-
Yup. The only way to charge the NH1 battery is with the charging stand. USB powered battery charging didn't come along until 2nd generation Hi-MD.

We've been getting snow here in Vermont, but yesterday we had rain. It froze on the road overnight causing people to drive reeeeally sssslllloooooooowwwwww on my way to work this morning. People were unnecessarily driving half the speed limit. These people live here...don't they know how to drive in the stuff by now? :-þ So, yeah...the weather and traffic conditions here are currently not too pleasant.

Neato. Here's a link to all the info about your remote... http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_RM-MC35ELK.html The removable, reversible clip seems like one of the best features, to me. What color did you get?

You could use an M-Audio MicroTrack or some other kind of similar flash device like A440 said, but a solution like that including microphones and whatnot would have you spending around $500 (at least, I suppose). That could be overkill for what you want record. A decent Hi-MD minidisc setup can cost about half of that, and you'd most likely get all the quality that you need for less money.

http://www.starla.org Perhaps the greatest Smashing Pumpkins fan resource, ever! http://www.oth.net This site has been around forever (almost). FTP sharing can be a good alternative to P2P programs. Hmm. If I think of others I'll edit them in later.

Your options are either that (256kbps) or Atrac3plus 352kbps. No 320kbps on 1st or 2nd generation Hi-MD units.

Well for anyone who may be interested, here's a follow up on what happened with my warranty service. First, about a week or two after I sent the deck out to the service center in Laredo TX, someone from Sony called me stating that they could not do an exchange, but they were willing to repair the unit for the same price of an exchange. I agreed, and a few days ago I got it back in the mail (after it was out for about a month). It was shipped in a box that different than the one I used, with lots of padding, and all the accessories I sent out with it came back wrapped up a sealed plastic bag (including the outdated SonicStage CD...thought I could get rid of it ). There were two labels on the back of the deck...one that had my name and request number, and one that said "Q.C. passed". This pleased me...seeing that someone actually tested it before sending it back out...it looks like it went through a good process. There was a repair statement which explained that some parts were replaced, and it showed the $29 cost of repair. Testing it out myself, everything seems to work well. Recording has worked without errors so far, and it seems to run quieter than before...no LOUD ticking noises, and the movement of the optical unit is quieter too. Tracks seem to be saving without errors. So...overall I'm a happy customer with a working deck. Thanks Sony.

If you're wondering about the difference in sound quality of an optical out vs. line out when transferring to PC, it is going to be a VERY small difference. Most likely, the difference in sound quality will be barely noticeable, if at all. In the end this is a question of how important the quality of the recordings are to you, and whether or not you want to spend the money. You'd need a MD deck with an optical out (like others here have said) and a soundcard with an optical in to make it happen. Cheers.

RH10 Digital Amp vs NH900 HD Digital Amp? Difference?
Skradgee replied to countspatula's topic in Minidisc
I've had a hard time hearing a difference between the two amps...but I do hear a small difference on CDs I've made from Line Out recordings. When USB transfer failed on a few of my discs...I made some recordings into my computer from the Line Out on the NH1 and the fake line out on the RH10 (no EQ, headphone volume up all the way). The result is that the RH10 recordings, as recorded on my comp, had less bass than the ones made with the NH1. For reasons like this, I would like to see a return of the true Line Out feature to Hi-MD portables. -
Very well said. I know of several public radio stations that only use DAT for their recordings. No minidisc at all from the studios I saw. As long as DAT tapes are made, I suppose this discontinuation won't be an issue...until new recorders need to be purchased. I imagine professional solid state recorders would be used...unless Hi-MD can come out as a true professional medium.

Bob, where did you find this seller? I'll be looking to get another NH1 if Sony doesn't send me a replacement one under warranty.

Read up, guy. You'll find good information about your equipment here if you don't want to read the manual... http://www.minidisc.org/equipment_browser.html

AMPlitude, I got a regular grey "dust bag" with the RH10 I bought from that Japanese eBay seller mentioned here at the forums (buyfromjapan). It has actually done a good job keeping the face of the deck from getting scratches. I've meant to put a sheet of PDA screen protector on it for weeks now...and I still haven't, but by keeping the deck in the bag before putting it in my pocket, so far the screen has barely been scratched at all. I didn’t think much of it when it came with the deck, but now I don’t take the RH10 anywhere without it -Skradgee EDIT: Also, g8rken... The remote (with a display) that is shipped with the Japanese RH10 does not display recording levels...if that is what you were wondering.
