  1. I forgot to add the Sharp MD-MT88/99 also has the 2 mic level sensitivity and if my memory is correct auto record pause with the mic
  2. Another "budget" player/recorder with AA battery( rechargeable or not), mic input, optical input, inbuilt rechargeing circuit is the Sharp MD-MT88/99 These are LP players not NETMD. They normally come with a small inline remote. I have had mine a very long time now, is rather worn but still works 100%. It has a very thick metal/alloy caseing, the likes of which you dont see today. A good clear display - better than the silly littje recessed displays in many Sony mds. It doesnt have tone controls. Other than that, if you can find a nice example you have a friend for life. I think these are one of the best made portables around.
  3. Paul I wouldnt use the RH1 for actually listening to minidiscs on the move. It is too expensive a machine fragile, rare and one of a kind for that. Get a much cheaper hi-md portable for that. maybe Sony NH600.NH700 These take AA batteries and at the price you can get them for expendable. & sound well enough. The main virtue of the RH1 is that it will transfer standard minidisc to computer, a bone of contention over the years & a final swansong for Sony Minidisc
  4. I store all my mini discs in those plastic 10 boxes and these in LP cases. All in just 2 LP cases. I have copied all my stuff to pc long time ago so this is mainly archive storage. But not hard to get to the small box that I want. I dont like those racks that display then individually as would mean too many racks that collect the dust & too time consuming to clean, also the dust gets into the sony type cases
  5. hmm what are they Lithium? You know they deteriorate over time even when not used? Maybe put them in the Fridge?
  6. 50 years thats a long time. When I bought 3 Sharp portables long time ago I thought that was rather a long time view, thinking that maybe 3 year each and 10 years altogether -I am still on the first... As for portables I wouldnt bother with any that use the tiny lithium batteries, you want ones that use AA, You can bet they will be still available in 10+ years time. re prices. I just looked at Ebay at decks and it seems that prices have gone up rather a lot. I bought 2 immaculate Sony JB 940 QS deck each around £70 about 5 years ago now, I see that ones lower done are going for 150+ silly prices
  7. Makes me laugh when I consider that a few people toted around portable cd players? any one here one of those people or know one who did? Must have made mini disc seem like space age? I nearly became one of those people but sense prevailed. Any one think there could be a retro craze for them?
  8. I make my own "audio books" from BBC radio and from the local library for my own use. Have most of the BBC classic shows u name it i have it lol Now that was a labour of love as it took me ages to do the job.
  9. When ever some thing is stopped being made sooner or later some one things they can make a silly profit from it. Was the same with BC micros. Once upon a time picked up a load of them with software and disks drives for a tener, now some people think they are worjt some thing special.
  10. open up a dispute and get 100% refund. The seller knew he was selling a pup.
  11. shame you didnt take a picture of it in the glass case. never see that sight again?
  12. well it seems Apple in particular are guilty of this. This was a special on TwitTV and it seems not all manufacturers are doing this, http://twit.tv/show/twit-live-specials/172 some interesting shows there - http://twit.tv/specials
  13. can also attach a ps2 keyboard and do it from here. here is a pic showing keyboard controls JB940 http://i.imgur.com/b5HnPbL.jpg The JB980 is different if interested make a copy as dont know how long it will be there. dont know how to upload here
  14. nothing wrong with living in the past. I saw recently a dismantling of the latest Apple Ipad by FixIt. seems like the days of screws has gone for Apple, to make it as easy ( = cheap ) to assemble them as possible. ( couldnt care less about repair, tough luck just throw it away - aslong as they last for as long as the warranty ) Now its just GLUE, GLUE GLUE. To repair you have to melt the glue careful to avoid melting things.....
  15. well welcome to the forum Losio, glad u atlast joined. your english is first rate. Had u not told us I think no one would have thought it wasnt your native language. You are braver than me to take apart a unit and swap over laser units. Welcome to the world of Retro!
  16. Only get AA battery powered units. I like the Sharp MD-MT88/99. These were budget in their day but built far beyond that - made of think aluminium and very durable I think. Should be able to pick them up cheap. Can charge them in situ using a rechargable AA battery if u have a 5 v charger that will fit. I use one from my old pda. The only think these do have in the way of inputs is optical and mic - that still ok? You can try your local Freecycle for stuff?
  17. is he a member here? may some one drop him a line ?
  18. some thing I have never done. wow the hail storm Norwich in June 2013 sounds ugly
  19. can I have your address pls so I can relieve u of the RH1's? I have a number of Sony decks - 3 x 940s & one 980. 3 x sharp MD-MT88/99 3 x sony nh600. I intend to hold onto my stuff aslong as possible
  20. well welcome to the minidisc community here. better late than never. Regarding the MZ-M200 (RH1). I suspect most people here who have one only use it for transfering stuff ( Standard & LP2/4 recordongs) FROM minidisc to pc - as it is too rare, fragile & expensive a beast to use for other things. It is the only device that will do that. It dont need a battery for that as it will take its power from the PC. Like you I like the AA battery players -I wouldnt bother with those that use the special lithium batteries. I think I prefer the earlier Sharp players like the Sharp MD-MT88 & 99 which are made from thick aluminium - feel really good and solid. I have a number , but still on the first one - they last so long. Regarding Sonicstage, I still have an old ( 32bit) XP machine that quite happily runs Sonic Stage with no problems - a good reason to keep an old XP box. Since you are now into retro stuff maybe pick up an old XP box really cheap to play around with Sonic Stage. ( prob get it for free from Freecycle ). Most monitors have more than one input ( vga, divi or hdmi), use one for the 7 box and another the XP box ( I do that) I also have a usb switch so that I can switch the keyboard and mouse from one pc to the other. In this way u can leave your good pc clean.
  21. and that was ever on the TV?
  22. Well I must be one of the stick in the muds. I still have my Roksan Xerxes record player & my Monitor Audio MD852 speakers. I have updated my amps to the Chinese Audiolab from my old lesser spec ones & I get good sounds even from UK DAB. I did have a listen a couple of years ago to the latest £600 or so loudspeakers, thinking that things must have got so much better in 20 years. I was wrong - a bit embarrassed as I made an exit from the HiFi shop. SO I will hold onto my MD 852's as long as I can. And my LPs. One thing that has changed for me is finding Windows media centre software - really one of the best things they have made. but not some thing that many are aware of. Gone are the separate dvd players, Humax freeview pvrs & dvd recorders and become for me a PC box and a screen with TB's of storage for every thing - has been ultra reliable so far as well. Regarding the new technology. I had a laugh this afternoon. I was on a London suburban train. There was this guy with his 3 devices - a tablet, some kind of smart phone and and another one all out and on the seat. He was playing an incrediblely tedious drive a car along a almost never changing road and occasionally going to the smartphone and in some way it what seemed talking to the tablet ( or maybe not ) . I looked around and there were other people fevourously playing with their devices. Not sure this minature Complete Solution technology a good thing?
