Yes I remember Sainsbury's selling off their stock of Sony md disc - I got about 10 packs at the time. I wasnt the only one though to buy them, they went quick. I think they were £2.50 a pack? a really good deal! Nice discs also. Still have most of them un opened together with quite a few nice JVC Crystal ones

where are you tbger99 ? & how many disks? & are they original discs made from analogue source, or copies from cd?

age related hearing - I think the brain compensates to a degree? Maybe you cann't hear dog whistles any more but music doesnt sound dull, unless you are really going deaf? I am old but full range music dont seem dull to me. BBC Radio 1 & 2 DAB seems bright to me. One factor is volume esp with louspeakers - the tonal balance changes the lower the volume with many speakers, less bright. As you get older maybe you dont want the head banging of youth?
-
Goodmans used to be a good ( hehe ) maker of loudspeakers , long time ago; now like many UK companies the name was bought to put on crap cheap stuff to help it sell.

I too like Sonic Stage - it has come a long way from the original messy console software. If you have GBs of recordings you do need some way to organise them? Ok no drag and drop. I do notice a difference with LP4, only reserve that for speech - which is most of my recordings, of BBC shows. Music lacks sparkle and sounds sat upon as trotter says; but the brain is a wonderful thing and I find over time I adjust if i record in LP4. The "new" atrac codecs are wonderful; shame only available for himd machines. One thing you do need to do over time is to remove any ear wax from any earbuds - if that gets inside can affect the sound. I have a pair of Sony MDR21 now discontinued. I lost one channel nearly, was about to bin them but pressed the "trumpet" that creates a seal and got the sound back - so took it off to remove ear wax. As good as new now.

I just want to see how long my gear lasts and compare to what will then be the latest lol. Its in the same league as those who still like analogue wrist watches?
-
ah scarrabri I have that little case also - got mine I think from Maplins in the UK very long time ago. mine also have a long strap

if you like the MD-MT80 you should try get hold of the MD-MT88, looks the same but with LP modes( or the similar MD-MT99 ). When Sharp made these cheap md they did a really good job? nice solid feel to them, practically all metal, last for ages - mine still going srong , looks a bit tatty but works fine. When I Bought mine Argos was doing a clear out so got 3 thinking that if each lasts 3 years then I am ok for as long as I would prob need them. The other 2 are still in their boxes un used apart from testing. must be about 6 years now or more.

This isnt a topic on minidisc per se, but I for one have been using Matt Robinson's Radio Downloader to download many BBC radio shows to listen to on minidisc. I used to do it the hard way - hook up a digital radio tuner a MD deck using a timer to switch and record them that way onto mini disc. Matt Robinson's Radio Downloader removed all that tedium by allowing subscriptions to BBC content then download them all as they came available, in drm free mp3 with no time limits. This software has been used by many people for years and its crippling has upset many people. The BBC it seems told Matt to remove the BBC plugin - the podcast plugin is still there, but its not really the same. Older versions wont work any more. The BBC intends next year or so introduce their own service - this though will have drm and time limits to hear the content just as with Iplayer. The end of an era. Thanks Matt, for all the good memories you made possible. & no thankyous to you the BBC for just making life harder http://www.nerdoftheherd.com/tools/radiodld/?utm_source=Radio+Downloader+0.26.2.0&utm_medium=desktop&utm_campaign=About+Dialog+Link

yes I agree jammy. I too like the partly mechanical part of it. This is modern Steam Punk? lol in a way it compares to owning a mechanical watch v a digital one? I also like that my portables just use AA batteries not some fancy likely to become unobtainable lithium cell. Lucky for us minidisc still sounds decent enough and is small enough, unlike cassette.

yes welcome to this haven. hope u post other stuff here now

there was on ebay in the last month went a MZRH1 that went for about £220 incl some himd, in vgc - a rare bargain http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-Hi-MD-Walkman-MZ-RH1/161034487774?_trksid=p5197.m1997&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D16%26meid%3D8353539054829693111%26pid%3D100016%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D181157481781%26

here is a pic of the 5 rather nice discs - http://i.imgur.com/xJzqrIw.jpg

maybe the sonicstage bit a red herring? google vanishing dvd drives - eg https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=vanishing+dvd+drive&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&gws_rd=cr seems like many ppl have such a problem. I know I used to in XP with a sata drive - updating the Intel drivers did the trick

OH I would go for a Sharp md-mt88/99 if u can get one. I bought 3, from Argos like u, long time ago and still on the first one - the silver surface of the metal is now very very worn & silver off the buttons, but works perfect. - MDLP, optical in, mic in, uses AA battery , can use rechargeble AA and can charge in situ & has a nice clear display. and very easy controls & basic remote. Dont know if jim hoggarth's comments apply to this model but I have some good ones it seems. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sharp_MD-MT88+MT99.html eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SHARP-MD-MT99-MiniDisk-player-recorder-portable-with-extras-/261255222016?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_MiniDisc_Players_Recorders&hash=item3cd4065300

Moving ATRAC files from one hard drive to another, Managing the Library
freddyjollo replied to Tom B's topic in Minidisc
Always run the file conversion tool periodically to strip away encryption? then u can move them any where. The time will come when u have forgotten to do this and move them to another pc and lose some or all? If i move files around I just delete the old ones from SS without removing the file from the pc and then load them from the new postion ie select the folder containing them, as if loading fresh( with Import Folder ). finding them one by one is slow and tedious. If its a whole sale move i would just delete the whole database( but not use the delete file option!!!) and load from the new folder(s) using "Import Folder" ie re create the dstabase. works for me. done it a number of times " -
wow went for £245 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221249608157?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 incl lots of himid some one got a bargain!

http://www.minidisc.org/sony_pro_md.html u mean the record function dont work or is it the MDS-B4P whch is only playback. if it is this then I would think then u cant use it as a AD converter as no inputs? From the pictures it dont have optical digital only coax anyway? also looks like only mono or stereo?
