Is the external pre phantom powering the mics? might be voltage spikes in the preamp , it happens , just enough but not really noticable. with a new mic pre , it takes a little breaking in period before they actually sound good. especially tube pres. If your running the Preamp Hot ( high Levels ) you might be just at the edge of clipping , Adjusting levels is a finesse thing not an all or nothing thing . The output of the Preamp might also be +4 db which is very hot on the line in of the MD which is setup for 0db or -10 consumer gear , a pro mic pre will have a +4 out . If you have a switch on the mic pre that says -10 db or +4 db out , then select the -10 , That will make the MD happy

Hey 440 , I havent noticed any static at all on my 40elk , I have purposefuly been putting it thru paces at quiet situations , just to see what it would do, based on what you mentioned earlier to me. Is your RH1 and remote a Mix match? did you buy a Japanese RH1 or Euro or Us , and where did the remo come from??? just curious , I am actually having quiet a good time with this remo , I have tried a number of different mics , and just walking around the house recording nothing but ambience raising ,lowereing , farting , burping and watching my kid rolling in the floor craking up because of it , .........track mark , rec adjustments all very very smooth.

Takes a fair amount of abuse to kill the R70 ..... mine lasted over 6 years ( just sold it recently, still working )

I agrre about the headphones power issue , the discussion that took place and the "Placebo" statement wasnt quite accurate, but most of the guys here arent studio guys. Good cans that take a preamp or work best on Pro Audio setups are going to make a substantial difference. But I will say this in defense of most of the guys here , whereas they might not be studio rats like you and me , there are some serious Audiophiles , with good ears. I chose the Yamaha RH-5Ma phones because of their sensitivity , they work great with MD and never have a Volume flux , I never have to turn up that loud . as will most people here will agree , at 15 on the volume with GOOD cans that have a high sensitivity, is more than enough. no need to get into the 20 range ( occasioanally I will get to the 20s , ) here is a post in agreement with that statement http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&am...st&p=115380 But what you have just posted is the proof of a great many Audiologists who have concluded that todays generation will mostly be deaf in there old age . The iPod gen . You cant have a converstion anymore without a keyboard to type on , because everyone has buds in their ears, head down , and two thumbs going on the keypad of thier cell phone. Take care of your ears dude , you might need them one day . "The Y generation communicates by word of mouse," said Rudowicz said. "It's cool to get out to play with your peers."

I will try it one day , I have about 10 discs with over 9 hours , 1 track where I have been archiving internet radio( Optical out on the macbook) I recorded in HiMD LP mode . so when I get the nerve and the time I just might import one of those just to see what happens I have to Counter you on the statement about 2gigs though , I am an Audio engineer , have been working in studio sound for a loooong time. Pro audio apps can give a lot more than 2gigs on a wave file , try 5 or 600 gigs for a 24 track full production situation where each track becomes not just a wave file but also carrying effect data ,track pans ,fader movements and all kinds of other material where each individual file then well exeeds the 2 gig zone . on example Sony MP3056 mixing board , 6 ADATs , a Mac Quadra 950 ,with 4 Drives Staged , and 2 external 500 gig drives. Effect pacthing for 36 effect proccessors , Full automation , Control Syncs fro the Adats to the 950 , and full controll pacthing for both at the Board . Groups that have recorded at this studio , Firehouse, YellowJackets,F.R.E.N.S, and a thousand others that I really dont need to type. The Studio setups at ILM an others are working soundtracks that are well over three hours, especially in Docudramas and other stuff . Research Tascam GigaStudio some good videos about that , actually you might could use it for your DVDs Now for the Home apps like the stuff for MD and DVD ,granted you may have a point That point being made I would have to say there MUST be a workaround , it just a matter of some genius ( which I am NOT ) figureing it out . Hard drives are just too big and proccesors have gotten to fast that it just isnt logical that that should be so .

comment no 18 was funny Purchased the Belkin TuneTalk Sterio and would not even think of using the other two. The fact that it is the only one that allows you to supply external power while recording makes it the only clear choice by far. Ipod batteries drain extremely fast when using the recording function. I've had my I pod for 8 months and on a full charge it went completely dead after approximately 30 minutes of recording. So I plugged the usb into a power output in the wall with my adapter and recorded a musician with no further stops. The downfall of the Tunetalk is that the mic is not really all that great. So I use Sony's sterio mic and the recordings sound excellent. No need for a preamp when using the external mic. Just flip the gain switch and it works like a charm. The quality and tone is strikingly similar to what hear on a Bob Dylan record from the late sixties. Great vintage sound! Goodbye minidisc recorder. I now love my Ipod recorder!! What model Marantz ? PMD 201 101, 360 , I would love to have one of the old Marantz decks , was always fond of the design. Cant find them anymore tho. Another way to Deal with that file is in Audacity ,(freebie) Load the whole file , drag the cursor over the quiet parts to highlight them , then at the top on the tool bar you see "Effects" there is a gain adjust ment there , or just select the Whole file and use the "Normalizer " that would be the quickest way and probably smoothest way . Step 1 :Toolbar, select "Edit" scroll down on "Select" you "Select All" Step 2: Toolbar "Effects" scroll down select " Normalizer" a popup window will ask you what level , set it at -2 db max , there is a check box the asks "Allow Clipping " uncheck it , then click OK bam, your done . Then export as Wav file and burn to CD http://audacity.sourceforge.net

I have found the 1 thing I did NOT want to find .......A reason to buy an iPod This will make it hard to convince a Podhead to get an MD http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/italkpro/

Yeah Bob , things have gone from Leg Speed to Light Speed since we were kids ,so the people who basically come of age in this time are surrounded with nothing but Instant Gratification. I still prefer a good Stew that has sat in the fridge for two days to really let the flavor soak in.

I had a good freind named Don Nance , he is a guitar amp builder ( ALL tubes baby) but he built also one of the nicest Mic preamps( tube of course) A little expensive but that thing sounded good , real good I wish he was on this board but he became a hermit , and has basically no contact with the outer world , he lives on a mountain in North Carolina now . But he would make some serious money here

No offense dude , but MD isnt TAPE its a Magneto Optical Disc your referering to it as tape might not be a good idea eh ! It is a disc . DAT is tape( good tape , but still tape) MD Disc Headphone out to line in on the computer , Record real time each track , Then make your CD
-
That would be in the region settings of the MD unit not the remote. So dont be dissappointed by the remote. none of them will give you Korean characters if the MD unit itself does'nt have that ability.

That looks interesting , wish I had a copy

Here ya go Download and open in Word
