3rd gen is here and glad to see himd still alive. But the lack of a jog dial and only a one line display (really what was sony thinking?) is a step backwards and I'll stick with my new rh10.

How about you?

Like many members in forum ,I also wan to buy RH1 ..but I want Black colour. My only chance of getting this with the help of someone who is living in Japan as Sony India will never launch it Here .

* I talked to Sony India regarding this new MD they told me that Sony India has no plans to launch it here .I also asked them if they can help me in acquiring this player first they told me that they can`t but after i insisted them they transffered the call to some guy .He told me that Sony India don`t take personal requests but if you still want it,the price will be lot (close to 600 dolors  )..I immediately told him sorry ...I can`t spend $600 for such a little thing .

:wacko::wacko::blink::blink:

Done

thanks

I think that one-line display is actually the equivalent of a two-line display since it's twice as long.

But your missing the point. After having a awesome 6 liner in the rh10, why take a step backwards?

Since this is definitely aimed at prosumer recording, I don't see the need for extra lines of information. That only leads to more battery drain and if you don't have an AA sidecar, that is the point!

When I record with my RH10 (that's really all I do with that unit 99.9% of the time), I need battery level, meters, bitrate, and time left. Anything else isn't very useful. If it were more of a player instead of a recorder, more lines make sense for more info. But, keep it simple and the battery drain to a minimum is my stance.

I will be in France next June, which means I am going to buy 2 black RH1... I wish Sony had released a BLUE one. Like my old Sharp ST-501. My only problem will be to find a hack for the sound limitation. I never had this problem before, because all my units were bought from either Japan or the US. Bot one black and one blue would be perfect.

The black model will be available in Europe, it has been confirmed so I can imagine that it may be available in the US; nothing solid on that front yet. Nonetheless, I am really excited about this unit and I will definitely be getting one ASAP.

so this is also a good news :ok: .I`m not worried about low Volume as i`m quite sure that we will be able to increase volume via volume hack

thanks a lot for clearing my confusion.

same ideas as mrsoul...this is a great recorder (and I do not really need a player), only the battery is a bit of a let-down

but I will definitely be getting a (black?) RH1

I must say everything I am hearing about this unit just sounds better and better. Sony have reall y pulled out all the stops. I will definitely be getting one. I'm not too bothered about the battery issue as I already have several units with Lip-4WM's.

The step from MD to Hi-MD was a major one, whereas the step from 1st to 2nd or 3rd gen Hi-MD isn't, in my view. A few minor changes/improvements cannot justify an upgrade. At least until the price drops significantly. Like many others, i'm not impressed by having to use a li-ion battery. The NH700 does what i need pretty well at the moment.

I just bought a new-in-box MZ-NH900 for a good price. It should serve my needs for in-field recording very well and that's all I need an MD for. Playing? My iPod does that extremely well. It might sound cruel, but MD's aren't as good as MP3 players, and therefore Sony realized that the only use for MD's are for recording purposes and so they optimized the RH1 for recording needs..

I voted "price drop".. should the price drop sub-200 euros, I'd buy it.

minidisc.com.au pricing spoils me. I would start to consider one at about US$200. But the unit is actually better than I initially thought, but it's a damn shame about the lack of AA. To me, it would be 70% more desirable with that simple addition (and I would be ecstatic if they made it standard, and not an add-on). A little more bulk wouldn't concern me.

The MZ-NH700 (budget, cheapppppp, still selling cheeapppp) spoils me rotten for power, and it's hard for me not to smile about the AA capability (which I would love to see on every unit). It's rightness, people.

...and the MZ-NH1 spoils me in almost every other department (date/time stamp, SpeedControl, metal construction, etc).

Price drop :)

This will change the instant Sony makes a deck. Nigh on impossible to get perfect sound from a portable, even if you have expensive phones.

Hi-Fi is the only way if you want quali-tay.

you know; i think i change my mind; i don't want a Hi-Deck; i don't need one; really;

what i got is good enough; makes me happy; why buy a deck from a company that just don't get it. they will find some way to muff it up; even a Muffett got more sense. Buffett probably won't buy one either; is there even any electricity in Margaritaville?

As is: No

Add AA sidecar: Definitely yes

Add multiline remote: Emphatically yes

Buying and charging extra batteries ahead of time will always be a hassle and a begrudging expense.

Being able to go into any mini-mart and buy a 2-pack of AAs that will get me through an entire weekend easily is nirvana.

So close.

Although it's truly sexy and my first Hi-MD-freak impulse would be to buy it as soon as it came out, rationally I have some reservations.

First, since I'm still backpacking, the LIP-4WM battery is about as impractical as it gets for me! Although the side-display seems friendlier to those recording while carrying the unit in a waist-pouch/case, I couldn't just nix the gumstick batteries/chargers I already have.

Moreover, I'd really really like to see the SonicStage restrictions dropped altogether, i.e. I'd like to do whatever the hell I want to with my existing MD/HiMD recordings whether they were optically recorded, transferred with SonicStage or burned on to disc with sunlight and my magnifying glass whilst twirling said minidisc on my pinky at an inhuman speed! :P

Having said that, I heartily congratulate Sony on making a killer 3rd-generation unit - feeling like Sony hasn't deserted us/let us down makes me feel better about dedicating my own time and money to them.

peace

I'm still torn between getting an NH1 on sale (it's selling for what, 100 GBP now?!?) and waiting for the RH1 and getting it.

My primary requirement is recording, and the NH1 has pretty much all the features there except for remembering manual gain settings. Additionally, NH1 has the AA versatility as a benefit.

Damn, this decision is really hard. Any help from anyone? Why shouldn't I just settle for an NH1 going cheap, instead of forking out 350 Euros for the RH1?

PS - I didn't vote, because my mind's not made up yet

The NH1 doesn't actually have any AA capabilities. Reasons you may want an RH1 are as you say the "remembering of settings" MP3 playback (which the NH1 doesn't have at all and is much improved over 2nd gen), faster transfer speeds, oled displays etc..

after reading through this, i believe that one very very critical factor to the popularity of the rh1 unit is going to be the AA sidecar (as some call it) for me, this will also be true in addition to the elimination of the lip-4wm batteries. I much prefer the old gumsticks.
