  1. I have a couple of the Sony brand gumstick chargers and have used them to charge all of my gumstick batteries, I also always wondered why there is no indicator light. One thing I have noticed is that a charging battery will warm up to almost hot within three hours or so of beginning a charge and stay warm for a few hours then cool off. I suspect there is some sort of current sensing circuit as well as over temperature circuitry that stops the charging after some point. I have never seen a schematic for one of the chargers so I am not sure. I have always been a bit leery of the heat the batteries generate while charging, don't want any fires, but no issues to date.
  2. I recall seeing automatic gain control on many cassette recorders in years past as well.
  3. N10 cable is the same, find a non-functioning N10 on eBay with cable for cheap. DH-10P cable is also the same but costly. It looks like the only N10 units currently listed are priced too high or it is not clear if the cable is included. You can keep any eye out for them, they routinely come up for sale and often go for a song. They have a built in Lithium Ion battery that was good for about 7 years so most only work now with an external power source.
  4. Nice oroville! Your collection is growing man, I think the LAM unit is pretty unique. I was watching the 610 player and would have bid on it but missed the cut off, you sure got it for a great price!
  5. Wow, it sold for 145! That is a great price for an RH10.
  6. Here is an auction to watch this evening (EST) for an RH10 on eBay, it has three hours left and is currently at 125 USD, I bet it jumps to 250 USD before it is final ...
  7. Standard MDs work fine and are still available for a pretty good price. I agree that Hi-MD media costs are crazy ... Not at all worth it in my mind. If you are looking for the best sound, I personally suggest you try real-time SP recording, you only get 80 minutes per disc but I suggest the sound quality is superior to Hi-SP. It's worth a try to see what you think. Not to suggest I have no Hi-SP on disk, I do and it is nice to be able to fit several albums on a single standard MD ...
  8. Sounds like an issue with oxidation on the battery or terminals inside the unit. Use a standard pencil eraser to polish the contacts on the battery and see if that helps. Your battery is not making a good connection with the terminals inside the unit, by cleaning the battery terminals it may help matters. I also agree that using the supplied RH1 charger will provide higher current for charging and is better than many USB ports which can sometimes only source 400 - 500 millis
  9. Welcome back McCol! The RH1 is a great unit. You can find many good deals on auction sites and as some report here at various local sales, etc. You can be back up and running full tilt in no time!
  10. Doesn't seem to be much interest in blank DATs here. I always wanted a DAT, now I have children and MD is the best I can hope to have without it getting destroyed ...
  11. I have seen MZ-M100 and MZ-RH10 go for 200 - 300 USD sometimes more. If you are selling on eBay you really have to let the market drive the price, if you try to sell it on eBay and force some high reserve price it is much less likely to sell. If you plan to sell, look to see how many other units of the same type are currently up for sale, try to list when there are fewer of your model up for auction. Or ... Offer it here to your friends on the board at a fair price and you avoid many of the scamming pitfalls of eBay!
  12. No plans to sell at this point, although it is a shame for them to sit around unused. I am currently "babying" my silver Japanese released model and use it three to four days a week for four to six hours per day only for playback, it is still in new looking condition and functions perfectly. I suspect there has to be some wear to internal components after such use for three+ years. On second thought, all offers of $1499 USD will be accepted immediately! ;-)
  13. I don't think many are actually selling at those prices. The same ones keep showing up for sale at crazy high numbers over and over. I agree I have three which were all purchased two or more years ago at around $300 USD. Two are still new in boxes!
  14. richardd, those are the same ones I just picked up, they work great. My opinion is they hold a long charge, longer than the knock-off batteries we hava ll been trying for the past five years or so. In a couple of my smaller low power units E909 specifically, they seem to run for nearly 40 hours of SP playback.

You have all of that equipment with you on your deployment? Keep a lock on it! Any other GIs with any interest in your hobby? I don't think most people understand our obsession ... :-) Nice stash oroville!
  16. Beauty PhilippeC! I understand arb226's plight, it is fun to collect cool unique MDs! I have mainly bulk blanks for future use, but it would be fun to collect obscure, unique samples!
  17. Wow, too bad it's not a little closer ... That would be a great deal.
  18. Stephen, That is absolutely correct. I have a very high end Marantz receiver with multiple single channel Burr Brown DAC parts which alone cost hundreds of dollars. The Digital to Analog conversion of my receiver is amazing. I have compared the sound of the analog output on my JA20ES to the digital output run through the Marantz and to be honest, the DAC chips in the Marantz sound better but for casual listening the onboard DAC in the Sony MD deck does a great job in producing great sound quality.* * Subjective opinion ...
  19. That went fast! Glad you were able to sell it so quickly. I do appreciate when folks offer their items up here before turning to eBay, it;s nice to have first shot at some cool equipment.
  20. That is a very cool find! I am always eyeballing various containers to tote discs around too. Very nice, thanks for sharing.
  21. Sadly, I think when a lithium polymer or a lithium ion battery go bad, there is no way to revive them as is sometimes possible with a nickle metal hydride. Is the battery no longer manufactured? I sadly own several really nice Sony units that use the LIP4-MW and have no "AA" sidecar battery capability and I will have to someday be forced to use them as non-portable player/recorders ...
  22. I just received the Powerstream rechargeables from the source Jimma provided, I charged one last night and jammed with it all day today and it worked great! It still shows a full charge after 7 hours of use!
