If you've two computers and two versions of windows and both will support the 780 and both refuse to recognize the 910 then, indeed, you have your answer. Better talk to our resident expert Jim, who will probably be able to repair it. One small detail though: the 910's USB transfer function will not work unless the device is powered (preferably by mains but perhaps a battery may do - and the performance of your battery contacts is the problem). I would suggest getting the mains adapter out and plugging it into that before you do anything else.

Good start. As I sort of suspected, what you need is the 64-bit driver for NetMD. The only possible problem is that getting rid of the 32-bit drivers may be necessary. However if you have only one unit, most of them won't have been installed (although present on hard disk) so it may be as simple as making a driver update. Note that inevitably you will get a signing error, (STOP: this driver blah blah.....) which may be ignored quite safely. You can find it as the top-rated download in our downloads section: Let us know how you get on Kind regards

What version of Windows are you using? What version of Sonic Stage are you using? Welcome to the forums.

Welcome to the forums. This post of yours, however is the most supremely uninformative post about a real problem that I've ever read, on this board or anywhere else. 1. There is/was nobody called "Arvin" 2. The person you apparently are referring to has not been here for a long time and this thread is 4 years old. I am now closing it. 3. The fact that "its not working for me" tells us nothing. There is software in the universe which fails (does not work) every day. Most of it fails because of user error, not because there's anything wrong with it. If you would like your problem solved, perhaps you could start a new thread and explain (in detail) your problem. There are dozens, if not hundreds of people here who can help, but only if you tell the symptoms of your problem as best you can. Don't worry about not being able to explain something because you don't know the correct words for it... just do your best and we will try to see what your difficulty is. For a start (one reason I am leaving this at the end of the thread) we need to know: a. What version of Windows you are running, including whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit Windows b. Does the Sonic Stage software complete (or mostly complete) the installation process? c. If not b. then where does it fail? d. If b. then what units (MD or HiMD) with model number (not serial number) such as MZ-RH1, MZ-NH700 etc are you using e. What are you trying to do, transfer music TO or FROM the minidisc unit? f. What sort of disk (standard 60/74/80 or 1GB) are you using? g. If standard disk and HiMD recorder, how is the disk formatted (MD/NetMD or HiMD)? Good luck

Funny, I just talked to Jim about this yesterday. Perhaps it was you that contacted him..... Unless we can scrape up a service manual from somewhere, there's no hope whatsoever. HiMD is sooo finicky. Very bad news for me, because up to now the handling of 1GB disks by my X-B8 has been (touch wood) exemplary. Certainly the "MD3" is the hardest setting to align HiMD units on... small surprise given the technology. Probably contributing to why Sony got out of the medium without a lot of fight, would be my guess, given the problems with encryption etc.

I would think that since there's no overwrite head, the clearance on the upper side of the disk is significantly reduced Jim has probably had some of these apart, I never touched my CA790X though. With reduced clearance (ie the overwrite head isn't lifting out of the way because there's no head) perhaps the cleaning disk somehow messes up?

Philippe, isn't anyone that uses a deck with optical output therefore using the DAC in their receiver as "external DAC"? That's what I have done ever since getting my first amp with optical input capability.

Upsampling is good. Especially at LP data rates.

I'm getting tired of this. I've merged the two topics. Chris, I don't know why you posted either of them.

I'm not even sure a driver is required at all. But if there is one, it should probably come from the files SonyNWUS.* (* = INF, CAT) The contents of SonyNWUS.INf are quite short: ; ; SonyNWUS.INF ; ; Copyright 2004 Sony Corporation ; [Version] Signature="$CHICAGO$" Class=USB ClassGuid={36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} Provider=%PRODUCT_COMPANY% DriverVer=04/09/2004,1.00.0818.0 CatalogFile=SonyNWUS.cat [Manufacturer] %PRODUCT_COMPANY%=SonyCorp [SonyCorp] %NW_WALKMAN_DEVDESC% = NwWalkman, USBVID_054C&PID_01C3 [NwWalkman.NT] Include = usbstor.inf Needs = USBSTOR_CBI.NT [NwWalkman.NT.Services] Include = usbstor.inf Needs = USBSTOR_CBI.NT.Services [NwWalkman.NT.HW] Addreg = MemoryStickReg [MemoryStickReg] HKR,,DeviceGroup,,"MemoryStick-MG" HKR,,Label,,"Network Walkman" HKR,,Icons,0x00010000," %SystemRoot%system32shell32.dll,-8" HKR,,NoSoftEject,0x00010001,"00000001" [SourceDisksNames] 1="%SOURCEDISK_DESC%",,, [SourceDisksFiles] SonyNWUS.INF = 1,,,,, [Strings] PRODUCT_COMPANY = "Sony Corporation" SOURCEDISK_DESC = "Sony Network Walkman driver Source Disk #1" NW_WALKMAN_DEVDESC = "Sony Network Walkman" If you are able, check the enumerated VID/PID of the connected unit in Device Manager. What is it? VID should be 054C (Sony) and PID, what is that? If it's 1C3 then the file (which should be part of your Sonic Stage install) should be the right one. I also noticed, looking through the manual, there's an option to choose LOW (100mA) or HIGH (500mA) power from USB connector, by reconfiguring the walkman. The comment says that if having trouble with data transfer, use the LOW setting.

There is no way that any HiMD unit will process an optical signal containing Dolby Digital (or, for that matter, DTS) output, AFAIK. So the optical out is probably ignoring the DD settings, and the question you ask makes no difference.
-
I guess you and I won the bet.... but Jim really is the expert. If it needs an over write head, I think he has them and is the only person I know with the skill to fit it. I've got one unit with no over write head that I need fixing, too.
-
If that's your only problem then it's not a problem AFAIK. Maybe someone with experience of 4xx units will comment. But if you cannot recognize it with windows, probably there is nothing to be done.

NH900 Read Error - but plays all pre-recorded immediately
sfbp replied to punkrockaddict's topic in Minidisc
There are numerous people here who would kill for an OLED. CD reading is completely differently set/specified from MO reading... it's a completely different mechanism and requires special phase of adjustment (which is always done first). That's why you aren't having trouble with it, most likely. It's easy to make the alignment disks yourself. You basically need 1 empty, and 2 full disks of data (the last is a 1GB), and one pre-recorded. The NH900 is the base model for all the others of that generation, so contains the most detail for you about how to service it yourself anyway. -
NH900 Read Error - but plays all pre-recorded immediately
sfbp replied to punkrockaddict's topic in Minidisc
NH900's are eminently repairable... in fact I just fixed one. But this sounds like a job for Jim. If you have a busted overwrite head, your unit will blank any disk the first time someone presses the track mark button by mistake. Definitely worth fixing and there's no OLED to die on you. -
Adjusting values in Service Mode MZ-E10 Error
sfbp replied to mdsince93''s topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Not that it's any of my business, but Jim is a friend of mine and definitely deserves your business; $6.20 doesn't seem unreasonable to me for airmail. The E10 being about the lightest unit ever made, 55g including battery. -
This model is old enough that Sony doesn't list as a supported product for Vista. Therefore, there's no driver. 1. Try the 4xx drivers at http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-download.pl?mdl=NWE405&upd_id=1936&os_group_id=13 2. If that doesn't work, try the same making sure to run both install and the installed version in XP compatibility mode.

It's nothing to do with the bulk storage driver. Your problem has to do with the HiMD unit's desire to switch identities between MD and HiMD. It actually changes USB ID, I think. However you will never get the NetMD stuff working unless you do away with all the remnants of 32-bit drivers. Unfortunately you appear to have skipped telling us the details (apologies if I missed them!). You need NETMD760.* and no other NetMD driver for NetMD mode. You need NO DRIVERS for HiMD mode at all (other than the Bulk Storage driver as you have correctly identified). Hope this helps. PS (afterthought). You might want to do the NetMD install with the Disc Mode of the HiMD Unit set to MD (it's probably HiMD right now). It will switch depending on what disk is in the unit, but if you tried installing with a blank disk or no disk, it's going to look like the default (set by Disc Mode).
-
To prove Jim correct, try PLAYING a regular MD (SP, or MDLP) only. If it works then your surmise may be correct, but if not then he is right and the laser head is busted. Correct Jim? I'm talking about a disk you make with some other unit which you know works, of course. The problem is that for HiMD because of the excessive encryption used, that Sony has to WRITE to the disk just to upload music data from HiMD to PC. Which is ridiculous, IMHO. Sure, I grok the technical reasons, but that just shows the whole architecture is a bit unreliable. Once you've messed up a HiMD disk there's generally no way to recover the data at all, because (essentially, if not exactly) the encryption key includes stuff specific to each file. Sony themselves have a back door of sorts but it's not yet clear if we can use it.
-
The prices there are reasonable. The original selling price for this unit (which I had not even noticed) quoted on the MDCF equipment browser page, over $1200 should have put me off anyway, though it's clear that must have been some sort of error or extortion, and not by Sony. Where did you get yours and how much did you pay at the time?

Unable to Select Folder to Transfer Music to PC
sfbp replied to Kadaan's topic in Grab Your Music (GYM)
Well.... I just tried the ORIGINAL 1.2b Beta and it ran with my NW-A1200 connected, under XP. I have a totally different problem now - the keywizard refuses to run (I tell a lie, it runs but just site there forever after making one directory on the hard disk). Without the keywizard, GYM refuses to export the tracks. I'm surprised if the NW-A1200 even needs keys because AFAIK all music on that device is unencrypted. I can copy off the files and play them. However GYM does read the database nicely. This means that if one looked at the source one ought to be able to figure out how to make the files on the NW-A1200 (and presumably 1000, and 3000) have the right names. One could borrow the source to write a nice utility to read files on there. (Incidentally I have a hunch this format looks like SS's "backup" format). Any idea what's going on, folks? This is my first experience of this piece of software. -
The other thing you can do is to upsample (from 44.1 kHz 16 bit) to 96 (or 88) kHz 24-bit, which is then fed to the (power) amplifier. This article is interesting: http://lampizator.eu/lampizator/TRANSPORT/behringer/Behringer.html Thanks to Bluecrab for telling about this device. It really works!

Just a moment... the improvements for the various versions of the DSP chips simply signify that a later revision of ATRAC DSP has been cast into silicon. It's still not impossible (ie I think it is quite likely) that general improvements in the DSP that Sony kept on making are worth having. Certainly the sound from Type-S playback is always that much clearer. What we're talking about here is simply the general updating of codecs, which we see all the time in software; but of course in this case the codec is built into the hardware.

Adjusting values in Service Mode MZ-E10 Error
sfbp replied to mdsince93''s topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
DVMs are cheap. Regulated power supplies and laser power meters are expensive. However you may be able to do without either. The md service manual generally permits an automated adjustment of laser parameters to be made with no special equipment. Jim Hoggarth has figured most of this out and may be able to fix your unit for you without costing too much. You can guess the room temperature. Just make sure it's in Celsius
