    Sony PCM-M10

    http://www.docs.sony.com/release/PCMM10.pdf
  2. 1. disable signature enforcement. The easiest way is via <f8> menu at boot time, if you know what that is 2. You need the 760 drivers, yes. Copy them on to your HD and point the installer at them when the time comes. 3. Install the 4.3 downloaded from THIS SITE HERE, and when it comes time to plug in your RH1, use the 760 driver. You should be in good shape. The driver is completely unnecessary unless you are trying to upload "legacy" MD, eg SP, LP2 LP4. IE if you recorded in any HiMD format (HiLP,HiSP, LPCM) you should be fine without any extra drivers. Hope this helps.
  3. It's true, that is the other difference, what the D version does NOT have is a power socket. But since all HiMD units can derive their power from USB, Sony probably thought this is not a significant limitation. Take a look at the pictures of 600D in the equipment browser. I'm not even sure these are real pictures, more like the advertising mock-ups we have run into and remarked on, on this board, before. Even the buttons are wrongly labelled.
  4. I have a 600D with the remote slot connector. I have a 600 with the same PLUS optical/line in. There are, I think, still 2 versions of the 600D.
  5. In which case (I presumed, erroneously, that you had failed to find the "Sound" menu) you should be OK. Regardless of remote, there should be access to the equalizer.
  6. For some 600D's: None. There's no slot for it, just a 3.5mm stereo jack. For others: the RM-MC38EL works just fine. I just tested it. Incidentally, if it is the LATTER kind (that accepts the remote) there is a fully functional "Sound" entry on the main menu, without using remote. This leads me to suspect perhaps you have the FORMER. In which case, as they say, you're hooped.
  7. I just pray that the remote is reliable enough. It's not the volume per se that I'm concerned about... but if Volume is one of the things that doesn't work you will have problems fixing it a couple of years from now when you decide that you can no longer live with the NVRAM settings. And it's difficult to generate a single VOL- press with the rotary switch on most remotes.
  8. Like I say, there's an extremely limited set of machines which support it. It's in our download sections in a couple of different versions. The JE630 and 640 do not support it. It's not for portables either. Main targets are combo CD/MD and Bookshelf units of a certain age, also the MDS-PC3. It predates the "protected track" idea - once you get to NetMD, Sony got paranoid; instead of adding to function, they started removing. There is no HiMD unit with this functionality. MDS-JB940 claims to have it but so far no one has reported it working. MDS-JE470 and -JE770. MDS-NT1. MXD-D40 (neither -D4 nor -D400 had this feature). MDS-PC3 (-PC2 doesn't have it) Japanese (Cream/Gold) version of MXD-D5C only (black US/EU one doesn't). CMT-PX3 (aka HCD-595MD), -PX5, -PX7 CHC-CL5MD, CMT-CP500MD/CP505MD, CMT-M100MD, CMT-C5. All of the above need the (extra) PCLK (-MN10 or -MN20, doesn't matter which) device which can be very hard to find. There's one on Ebay Italy right now, brand new. Nothing else will do. After this point they all combine NetMD and control into one standard USB cable with 2 drivers. CMT-C7NT, -SE9, -M333NT and M373NT. Various LAM models (almost impossible to find) - Z1,Z10/10 PCLK driver will run in W7 (to be accurate, in 64bit Windows) only in XP box, so need Pro or Ultimate version. Vista and XP 32 bits both fine. Not sure about W7/32 Hope this helps. Stephen
  9. It's just a known problem the second generation HiMD units (M10/100, RH10/910, ?RH710, ?DH710). People have speculated why, but my sense is that Sony had not yet mastered the technology at that point. Subsequently their MP3 support improved including their conversion FROM Atrac to MP3 which they released as a "goodbye" present. I have yet to hear any conversion where having ATRAC3+ 352 makes a significant difference over 256. However going the other direction, it's essential to convert ATRAC3 (66 and 132kbps) to at least MP3 256kbps, because ATRAC does a much better job of compression than MP3.
  10. Sonic Stage doesn't come close the the convenience of MCrew because you cannot divide or combine tracks on the portable. IMHO, Philippe.
  11. Why would you need a new BIOS for W8? I read microsoft's compatibility guidelines, and it seems unlikely that something of this nature would be the deal-breaker. You should be able to (WORST CASE) install W7, install the BIOS, Install W8, in that order. However it seems more likely that fan noise is actually some process getting out of control. May I suggest downloading Process Explorer, and trying to figure out WHICH process and perhaps what it is doing. A typical example would be something supporting a device thats not there, (or a device with no driver), or MSFT anti-virus trying to connect to home server and download an update. If the problem abruptly goes away after 12 hours connected to the internet you can be reasonably sure that this was what was happening. YMMV
  12. As long as you can use the remote to do Vol- during future expeditions to service mode <big grin>.
  13. The point is, neither Tascam not MXD-D400 can be hooked up to M-Crew, which is pretty important if you want to do editing of your MD's conveniently. (Titling, track splitting etc). The D40 is the last one that can be, and it has the Type-R chip which is as good as you can get for recording purposes.
  14. The major places I've seen interference on signals (not necessarily from MD) are: 1. Analog TV (CRT and the like). I have had none of this since getting LCD a couple of years back 2. Hum from ground loops and the refrigerator. This is gone since we redid all the wiring, but it used to be a real problem. Whether the chokes worked, I don't know but they're probably not a bad idea. Ever put a speaker too close to the back of a CRT (outside, of course)? Weird and wondrous onscreen colours, and you need to enter the monitor's degaussing routines.
  15. They are required by FCC and other regulatory authorities to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic radiation from usb signals passing down the cable. The technical term is "choke".
  16. The connector goes to a bunch of stake pins which are about as solid as the rock of Gibraltar.

    DLNA for ATRAC anyone?

Time to bump this one a little. I have spent a lot of time going backwards and forwards with the developer. He and I should be able to have an interesting dialog about his product here, provided no one objects too much. One reason I haven't pushed hard, myself, is that some of the ATRAC stuff is just coming onstream right now, and I wouldn't want ANYONE to get misled into getting on board too soon. But it's looking really really good. Seems to me that this is the answer to prayer for many many of you out there. I'd love to hear a few comments, even negative ones. I have nothing to gain except the satisfaction that ATRAC will continue to get used in the network-based systems of the future. Stephen
  18. Can you find a way of sharing the service manual? We can probably upload it for all. There's a couple of people here who may have enough familiarity with MD service manuals to help you figure it out. Simple question: does this error (or errors) only occur when you put in a disk? How many disks do you have? If not too many, someone down there may be willing to do the job for you. What you undoubtedly need is a Sony MZ-RH1, the only unit which will allow you to upload those precious recordings at high speed using USB. The Denon, although nice, will only let you do it all at x1 even when you do get it working. The RH1 uploads at about x10. Welcome to the forums!
  19. There's no guarantee of a signal drop with a digital signal. Some devices "artificially" generate one, some do not. Users complain in each case - the gapless afficionados want the signal to stay, the track dividers want the drop in signal to trigger a mark. For sure, I know Sony's PCLK-MN10 *does* generate a real signal drop. Likewise my bus-based sound card (Terratec) does not. Hope this helps. Sean: I agree with you about the two-speed FF feature. It took the longest time for me to figure out, at the end of which I had, like so many others I suspect, worn out the jog lever on my MZ-RH1 by FF-ing during audible playback.
  20. 1. You need the right Laser Diode 2. You need to mount it (duct tape may well do) 3. You need to tap the right pins on the ribbon connector (separate) BD board of the D40. You're not the only one considering this mod at this time, I can tell you that. I did it the hard way, someone else came along just after and figured the easy way. Mine is still working..... Cheers Stephen

    DLNA for ATRAC anyone?

Do y'all know about DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance)? Well, I was looking around for something to manage video files on my network after I discovered that the free product (AllShare) from Samsung crashed under the load of too many files. DLNA has been around as a more-or-less-standard since 2003. It means in principle that someone can write a DLNA client and talk to any DLNA server, or provide a DLNA server that can be used by any DLNA client. This is an improvement on custom solutions because one is not locked in to a single vendor, and because future devices can be supported by innovative techies writing software of one sort or another. This last year saw me get my feet wet in the tablet (and smartphone) market with no less than 3 different android devices from different manufacturers. The point is that there's software for Android (from independent third party authors) that will play MP3, WAV, WMA, etc etc, in addition to handling a bunch of video formats. That's by the bye. But what DID occur to me was "wouldn't it be nice if I could stream ATRAC?". I am even thinking of iPad owners So when I researched to find a DLNA server, I ended up finding one in Australia, and spent much of the last month first getting everything working with my various devices (including 2 TVs and also Windows Media Player), then convincing the author to add ATRAC conversion and streaming. The result is that there's a version almost does everything one might want available, and I guess there's going to be an announcement sometime soon. But the present post is to see what level of interest there might be. If you want to get some preview information, feel free to PM me. I'm not being deliberately mysterious (anyone with half a brain will find it in about 10 seconds) but I respect the right of the members here not to get spammed. To give you a clue, the on-demand conversion is being done by ffmpeg, which is a direct spin off from the #linux-minidisc project, and allows even copy-protected files to be played (sadly Atrac3+ aka HiMD awaits the next release or so of ffmpeg, but rest assured that is in the works). ATRAC lives.....!?!?

    Black Screen

Sounds like the inverter to me. Not a vaio expert, but they're probably the same as any other laptop in this regard.
