  1. Were these disks by any chance the ones with transparent cover? There's a "stray light adjustment" on some MD drives, and I think it only kicks in on these transparent MD's. I recall having very strange problems with exactly that one from TDK, recording using a portable, and then playing back in the car in my MD changer.
  2. I think your NVRAM settings need adjusting. They control, among other things, at what voltage the charging circuit turns off because the battery is now working.
  3. My point is you don't want to push it or bend it at all. If the head goes down too far, all you get is scratched disk and (possibly) ruined OW head. The stepper motor that moves it may be stuck.... Jim's the one with the ultimate wisdom on this and what to do.
  4. I have a hunch u r trying to install to (or from) a path that is too long. Create a brand new directory called c:temp (or some other name if taken) and start by unzipping the download into that. DO NOT run setup from within the zip file. When you install, DO NOT choose the default path but pick or make somewhere like c:sonic or d:sonic, depending on where you have the most available space. Hope this helps
  5. And what do you mean by this? Sounds a bit like Creationism, which I don't believe in.
  6. Dont bend it. The movement comes from behind via a servo motor.
  7. I'm not going to repeat myself, except this one item: "Over Light" is a mistake.
  8. Nope. And it doesn't even run reliably on 110V.... you need the correct xformer for 100V. Cycles don't matter, Japan is mixed 50 and 60.
  9. The overwrite head on that one is different again, namely 1-500-175-11. The optical block is a KMS-210A which is different again from either 260A or 260B. It certainly does look quite different in the picture. The good news is, if the overwrite head on the JA3ES turns out to be the same as one from a more humble deck such as the JE510 or JE520, then the chances are that ALL overwrite heads are the same. Right? (note that the manuals for the 510 and 520 corrects the "over light" nonsense to "over write". I imagine this is fixed from then on) More good news - lots of later units use a 260B. I can tell you whether the overwrite head is different between 260A and 260B. I'm guessing not.
  10. Did you try this: http://www.sony-europe.com/support/en/product/SVE1512F4E/downloads/SOAVAG-00273973-0082_6530
  11. Thanks very much. Are you willing to put the source online? If so, we would be willing to upload it to our board here for all to enjoy. Not myself being a GYM user nor an NWZ-HDx owner, can you tell me which walkmen it supports please? The NW-A1200 for example? Admin
  12. Haha see Kardon's post today.
  13. Chris Chris Chris...... http://minidisc.org/multitrack_table.html
  14. I respectfully disagree. Even Sony's genuine batteries say made in China on them.
  15. Aaron.... stop! The overwrite head is separate from the optical pickup. It's called overlight because in Asian countries they have a hard time with "r" and "l" and so some person transcribing notes to the original service manual wrote "light" instead of "write" because they had no idea what they were doing. I'm sorry - I assumed you understood this from my earlier comments. That head in the picture could be a 260A, the following "AB" is just some suffix or other and probably irrelevant. In any event the 260AAB is written on the drive, not the head, in that picture. I remain unconvinced that there are physically two different types of head. Typically what Sony seems to have done is to make the first revision in something upmarket (ie expensive) and then replaced it with something cheaper which was made in volume. I am not certain that the suffix really makes any difference at all. Jim thinks so, but he doesn't actually have a 20ES or 333ES to compare. Right Jim? Especially regarding the overwrite (which is magnetic not optical) head. If you're right then what they're offering is a REAL bargain - note they want 75 Euros for the lowly JE520's 260A. So I am highly suspicious that a. they don't know what they have or are remaindering it (always possible) or b. it isn't what you want. Best Stephen
  16. You said it pretty good, Jim. The one other change of significance is the addition of keyboard socket - which doesn't happen until you go to the 630. The 630 appears to be a 530 with a keyboard socket, IOW. But I don't have (and haven't) a 530 to listen to. The 530 and 630 both have Pitch control. This is present in later models, but I think the 630 is the last one allowing you to RAISE as well as lower the pitch. The raise pitch ability appears to have gone with the introduction of MDLP, though I daresay I'll get corrected by someone I'm waiting to hear the results of the great debate (in the other thread) over whether the head I've ordered can be fitted to all models, as I don't understand the intricacies of the differences between optical pickup models.
  17. I think not without some additional hardware. I'd be inclined to go for something later, in particular with MDLP such as the 680, though, or 790X (last and best, including Type-S DSP). You can force the 580 to accept aux input using something called an AUX ON adapter. It just pretends to be a changer and plugs into the rear BUS socket. Whether or not to put the extra money to buying a later unit, that is the question.
  18. My point being (perhaps) that even at that date 4.5 has showed up. Don't forget there's no Type-R in the replay phase - it only applies to recording. So the answer is probably that, except for Type-R rearrangement there is at least the possibility of very good prerecorded MD's as early as the beginning of 1997.
  19. http://www.minidisc.org/atrac_versions.html A small comment: I got this by looking for "atrac versions" in google. There are at least a dozen references all of them interesting, that are relevant on the very first page of results. Chris, sorry to say but this research is all old hat. You could find out these questions for yourself. We appreciate (and enjoy) the discussion, but sometimes it's better not to be answering all these over and over. Sooner or later someone will make a mistake (as I did with "MO") and mislead some poor person 3 years from now Kind regards Stephen
  20. I stand corrected! What time of the night did I write that....... sigh.
  21. Me too, I don't think those Onkyo ones are going to be easy to find. The (Sony) portables have NO ready-made digital out on the DSP chip. It may well be the same for the decks.
  22. My thoughts exactly. Did you confirm that the first disk (was it a DVD?) actually enabled a bunch of songs to be transferred to the PC? If nothing at all came, you may have a rather different problem.....
  23. Apart from Jim, what's your source of information? In any event it's the overwrite assembly that you need fixed (assuming your original post describes the problem correctly). I'm actually wondering if they renamed the part you want. Jim, I can see the MECHANISM (the drawer) part of the MD being different but what's our evidence for the HEAD being different?
  24. Get hold of the service manual - then we'll see.
  25. Indeed, the cable TO the overwrite head is probably bad, they go brittle. But you still have to fix it. There are other possibilities too but they all involve replacement. I soldered a broken ribbon cable exactly once (actually it took a hawk-eyed friend who cursed somewhat) but first you have to FIND the break.
