  1. 1. Check ebay for sold listings - you will find rh1 is not sooo bad. In Japan they even rent them for people like you. 2. HHB portadisk 500 does the job if you have all SP recordings. 3. The $4799 guy is a standing joke, 66 people wanting to see what happens, 10x too high price. There is no way around the limitation - it is effectively in hardware, for all the difference it makes. The firmware of the units is not upgradeable, and the USB connection is too slow.
  2. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT run in compatibility box. It will be more trouble than it is worth. Except for NetMD drivers, which you must install separately for each device, you are good to go with SSUV2 on Windows64.
  3. Maybe I was wrong. Perhaps the ffmpeg method doesn't require the device-specific keys. Note that VLC will play 132kbps ATRAC3 but not ATRAC3+ (the hiMD format). Ffmpeg will play both.
  4. I notice the guy is using the wrong converter (115V instead of 100V) - buyer beware!
  5. Or direct CD's. With gracenote that makes your AAL generation easy
  6. You don't need Pro. The standard version can be had for $50 or less.
  7. Sound forge will directly output to NetMD but this capability may be limited to Windows XP, or at least 32 bit. I'll try it but the next days are going to be hectic of course. This means your best MD sound will be LP2 (132kbps). If this is OK I'd say go ahead and try it out. I have tried it under XP before. To read tracks into SF they have to be decrypted already, but you knew that Philippe......
  8. 1. Be sure you have enough power. The N510 will NOT draw power from the USB socket, you need AA battery, or preferable +3V DC 2. Hope this helps.
  9. This thread is veering off into irrelevance I think. Sorry guys!
  10. Nope. The Connect store used completely different authentication keys from transferred-oma-recordings-to/from-minidisc. So it won't work, and there are so few people out there with samples that it would be impossible to find the keys by tinkering.
  11. If you right click on the SS entry, does it give you options to convert or save? You cannot authenticate against Connect since it's gone. However I wonder if the MP3ConversionTool works on Connect-encrypted tracks?
  12. I don't see why that affects Sonic Stage. Generally system dll changes would not have any effect on a roughly 10 year old app like Sonic Stage. It may be good advice... but OTOH you may just end up placing restrictions on the software you're installing. My vote would be NO although I'm sure there are situations where SFC is quite useful. YMMV.
  13. Nope. If you can play it, that is your only workaround. Optical out and record afresh (to MD or whatever). Knowing Sony, it's probably an uncopyable signal (SCMS) but if not, then you're in.
  14. Followup re: VLC I contacted the lead developer at VLC about the fact that (when I last checked) the VLC player does not play ATRAC3+ at all. Apparently someone gave them the wrong sample (probably an ATRAC3 sample) for testing. Is there anyone out there reading this who is well in with the VLC crowd? If not, I would appreciate a flurry of bug reports coming from lots of different people to shame them into fixing this (assuming it isn't fixed already). I was really underwhelmed by Monsieur Kempf's moving this into "Bugz Paradise", without waiting for any followup - his idea of efficiency, I imagine. No response to a further 3 or 4 emails I sent. VLC is a fine product but this action leaves us out there stuck in the wind. Long live ffmpeg!
  15. Isn't the 818 totally drag-and-drop? So we're not talking Sonic Stage, are we? Then it becomes an issue of whether you get full browsing capabilities, or (only) MTP protocol to communicate with the device. Very often strange things happen if the USB port on the PC is not very good. For example, I cannot do much with the USB ports on my Thinkpad Dock, but the 2 ports on the laptop itself are ok. Is this an 8.1 upgrade by chance? Somehow I might expect that upgrade to cause problems, unless you could really get rid of all traces of old devices first.
  16. Thank you very much. Sights and sounds of my childhood. I too still have a reel-to-reel taperecorder, and recordings of family and friends - though never outside - your editing especially of video is quite superb. Very best wishes for a Happy Christmas from the other side of the world. Stephen
  17. Yup. That amount of data corresponds to some 16 bit counter. Will be more or less than 41% with different data rates. Everything completely normal. As they say in the US military S.N.A.F.U. In the words of Winnie The Pooh (actually Wol) "crustimony proseedcake".
  18. Strangley or not, I think this lot belongs in the loft.
  19. Well, congratulations. I wish I could get my act together to get rid of some stuff too. For the moment, my only interest here is to do the opposite of what you have asked, namely to see if you are interested in letting me acquire just one item, the NW-HD3. a. I live half a world away and postage will be prohibitive b. I am way oversupplied with the other items, though I admit the blue MZ-N710 is very pretty. The NW-HD3 represents a very interesting stage in the development of the Sony portable player which I managed to miss completely. For one thing they were expensive, I believe. For another, I had no disposable cash at the relevant time. And thirdly, I think they must have worked quite well because one rarely saw people trying to unload them here or even on Ebay. So - not exactly a "must-have" but at least "would-rather-like" item for the collection. I totally take your word on it that the battery is in good nick. Does anyone have a clue as to whether said battery can be replaced, and/or whether the HD itself is either reliable or upgradeable? That's all for now, don't mind me. Proceed with your goal of selling the whole lot. You might actually realise more in bits but I totally understand why you don't wish to. Merry Christmas from (currently and unusually) freezing Vancouver Stephen
  20. Once you've got an RH1, it's quite easy except: 1. The are software setup challenges. Connected with: a. having other NetMD devices previously attached. b. increased security due to all the hackers in the world c. 64-bit Windows. Those are things we spend a lot of time helping people with. 2. The uploaded files have to be decrypted (Sony gives you the tool for it, you just don't realise they did, and it's foolproof). It's important to do this before the next time someone does a System Restore, or (worse) new install of Windows. THEN you can lose the uploaded files. You'll never lose the original MDs. 3. There IS one known major bug in SonicStage that can affect your (own) recordings - if you try to delete more than one unlabeled track from your legacy MD recordings using usb, game over. Solution to this is always label everything ASAP, even if the label is one character long. Then they can be deleted just fine in any combination. The only other non-intuitive thing to watch out for is that you are better to upload in compressed (ATRAC3+) form than in WAV. The former allows you to keep the metadata properly. It's also, sonically, as good or better than 16-bit WAV, believe it or not. You may have to reconvert later if that's what you want to do, but Sound Forge is (since version 9 or so) sold by Sony and will do almost any conversion you (later) need, provided you decrypt the files (#2 above).
  21. Not sure why the NE410 is worth the trouble TBH. Service manual at http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NE410.html
  22. OK, I looked a bit more carefully. This search engine is basically useless: 1. You cannot get the order feature to work on more than 1 page at a time. Thus an attempt to look at Minidisc Player from high price to low price simply orders the items on page 1 from high (300) to low (0.05 or so) 2. Most of the items are mere pointers to Ebay auctions (with a few Amazon.co.uk references). 3. Trying to exclude (by "-ebay") ebay doesn't really work. If you do !ebay (looks vaguely correct, but maybe someone has knowledge to do it properly) one typically gets 2-10 pages of what appear to be random items with no connection to MD. Actually I restricted by including the word Sony to do #3, so maybe it's a bit better. But no reasonable pattern to the results that I could see. Too bad.
